I needed a receiver that has HDMI switching, and this one fit the bill. I have a 5 speaker setup - my big front speakers have built-in powered woofers.
Features I love:
- HDMI switching and upconversion, any input to HDMI output
- PC analog input (for monitor connection, if HDMI unavailable on the laptop)
- Internet connected for Pandora, Internet Radio, etc
- Audio loudness leveling by input (each input can be adjusted +/- 12 db to equalize the gain)
The speaker setup with included microphone is fast and easy. It seems to work well, although I don't have test equipment to verify this. After setup we watched a movie and the sound effects were terrific.
Speaker terminals are spread across the bottom row so it's easy to reach around the top of the unit to plug in components without having the speaker wires in the way.
It lacks an AC outlet jack - I would have liked to have a switched outlet to plug in a cabinet fan. But there really isn't any extra space on the back panel for an outlet; it's jam-packed.
When switching HDMI channels in High Def (especially) there's a delay before the new channel displays. I don't know if this is unique to this receiver - I doubt it - but it's annoying.
I'm using it with a universal remote that uses wired emitters. The emitter for the Onkyo is fastened to the front panel in front of the sensor. Even so, I can still use the Onkyo remote when working with menus and other features that I haven't programmed into the universal remote.
It hasn't run too hot so far, so my need for a fan was imaginary.

At first I thought wife or someone was leaving unit on after a month or so of this I found that it was turning it's self on. Mid Aug 2011, I noticed it turning it's self on, switched to cable/sat box, and was cycling through listening modes. Late Aug/early Sept receiver had to be disconnected from power to shut down. Searched web for solution, found press release from Onkyo admitting problem and assuming responsibility. That's when I called Onkyo 9/5/2011. I was emailed printable shipping label and told that a box would be sent 48-72 hours. As of 9/14 no box. Called Onkyo, told I would have box in 3-5 days. 9.22.11, still no box shipping label expired. Called again, 20-30 min wait, spoke to non english speaking gentleman, told there was some kind of delay, the "email department" was closed and he would call back 9/23. 9/23 same guy called back to say that a box & shipping label would be pispatched 48-72 so we'll see.
I'd always considered Onkyo to be pretty darn good equipment, but now, I'm not so sure. Especially with the run around I've gotted the last few weeks. This is just plain sloppy customer service. The kind of treatment one would expect from Sony or HP. BTW, I purchased TX-NR709 from those wonderful folks in Charlottesville,VA.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
The auto equalize system on this receiver (you hook up the included microphone and it does a test to measure your speakers distance and correct signal output to each speaker) made the room sound SO MUCH BETTER. I replaced my 10 year old Onkyo with this one and I feel my polk audio speakers sound better. Louder volumes sound more full range. Great on screen menus too.

The automatic tuning is a breeze to use and it sounds great.
DVD's have never sounded so good. The Network feature is great. You can control it with a smart phone to do anything you want.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
Instruction manual I find takes a lot for granted. It is as though it was written by someone who is too close to the development of the product versus someone who has never used it before. After several readings and a lot of trial and error have have most functions working.
I love the THX functions and sound of Blue Ray disc a 5 star for that.
Watt per channel ratings are missleading. They do not have specs for all channels driven at the same time. What are they hideing?
This unit runs hot even when in standby mode.
DO NOT waste your money on the Onkyo USB wireless link interface, use a cat5 cable instead.
USB drive is my favorite way to play Hi Res files, like flac etc.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
This is perfect mid/upper range receiver. Plenty of power and I added a 5.1 Klipsch hd 500 speaker system and it is great. I use zone 2 all the time as I ran 2 outdoor yamaha speakers on my deck and they sound pretty good. I also use pandora and napster and they play flawlessly with the Onkyo wireless USB adaptor for 30 bucks. I would certainly recommend to someone that wants 2 zones and Plenty of HDMI inputs. I am running everything through the HDMI inputs except I also added an analog signal to the AVR from my satellite rec to zone 2 as zone 2 does not play digital sound (unfortunate, but is ok). All in all this is a very nice setup and a nice bonus is the remote that will allow you to sequence and control all the devices one may need to control just like a Logitech Harmony will.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
I bought this product with a lot of anticipation. I've been disappointed. Although it is basically doing its job, some functions aren't working: (1) Audessey DSX setup hangs, (2) speaker level balancing problems when using an external amp, (3) optical input failure. Except for the Audessey problem, I'm not sure the other two problems are with the unit or something I'm doing. The jury's still out. I've returned the Audessey mic to B&H. Maybe the replacement will work. The user manual doesn't help much. Like many electronic devices these days, the Onkyo's manual is a model of jumbled organization and general obfuscation. For a long time I thought this was just the way it was, but a purchase a few months ago changed my mind. The Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player manual is clear, well organized and uses proper English. Would the TX-NR709 manual be like that! Onkyo's tech support was not helpful. The rep offered no suggestions other than to return the unit.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
You'll be hard pressed to find a digital receiver with as many and as comprehensive a features list as the Onkyo. It works seamlessly, sound and video quality is excellent. Setup is good, but not for the complete technophobe, configuration for fine-tuning is certainly advanced. Setting up internet radio is also not a breeze... Other than that, the actual functionality is incredible... and well worth the switch from whatever you may have now in its price range.
