This is my first receiver of this caliber, so I have nothing really to compare it to. I upgraded from an old Sony HTIB 5.1, which had no inputs and only played DVDs.
I paired it with an Onkyo SKS-HT870 7.1 Speaker system and a Samsung UN55D7000LFXZA 3D TV.
The first thing, taking it out of the box, man this thing is huge (51 lbs) and has lots of connectors and buttons. So setting it up, my cabinet was 1/16th too narrow to slide it in and had to remove all the upper drawers to get it in. I also mounted two 80mm fans to push air into the cabinet, although I am a bit wary of the heat generated.
The setup and connection as pretty easy for a beginner, although I am tweaking it all the time to get the best setup. The 7.1 speakers work great and the HDMI control works well with the TV. I run a Play station 3 for the 3D video through High-speed HDMI cables.
Overall my setup works well, although I have noticed a few quirks with the 809. Namely, I have setup the Uverse box to work directly with the TV when the AVR is in standby, when first switching on the TV and Uverse box, I have to cycle their power once to get the audio to work, secondly when switching on the Tuner, the TV switches on occasionally. Also the Tuner is not as sensitive as my previous Sony and will probably have to boost my FM signal.
The Audio Return Channel works great and gives me 5.1 back from the TV using Netflix. I think there could be some minor improvements, probably through firmware, although that could just be me not fully understanding the layout yet.
I looked as some higher end speakers, although with the TV and 809; fell out of my budget, so I will work on this in time.
I am not expert Audiophile, however, I could not fault this unit on any of the sound quality or clarity. As an amateur Audiophile, it has taken me some time to setup the finer points of the unit, but so far the instructions have been easy for me to understand.
The build quality is really good and cannot find anything that I would change.
I did look at other AVRs but through and through this unit got many good reviews and had everything that I needed.
There have been some questions about Onkyo's support from others, however online and through the different forums; I have found everything I need.
I would not hesitate to buy this unit again and would recommend it based on my experience. I did engage an Audiophile to examine my setup and he noted that he could not see or hear anything that he would criticize about the setup, so here is hoping I made a good decision in the long run.

I just bought this receiver and after setup it worked great. Great sound, great features. My only concern was that the HDMI ports seemed a little loose. But it worked fine so I didn't think anything of it. However, later in the day, the video kept cutting in and out. I reached in the back and wiggled the HDMI output cable and the port that was loose from the beginning was now too loose to give a constant signal. Returning back to BH for a refund.

Mostly happy with product, but, but....
In review (By Josahua):
"Has 3 zones (need amp for the 3rd zone) and whole house feature to play the same output to all three zones (without delay between zones)."
This is not true for "NET"-source, zone 1 is far behing on zone 2/3 sound (so much that I cannot use "Whole House Mode" with "NET" source. FM-Turner and analoque sources don't have same issue. Some improvement can be seen with "Direct"-mode on zone 1 (main speakers)

Works great with my polk audio speakers in my home theatre. The menu setup and option were easy to use by viewing them directly on my 65 LED TV. Using my IPhone I installed the free APP and can control the receiver with it.

Very easy to setup, sound fields and sound production for 5.1 were great. An improvement over my Integra DTR-7.2. Great picture and even sound production in very big angular room.

Used in my home theater.
Mostly easy to setup...although I am disappointed that I got the manual on CD instead of a hands on manual!
Am very pleased with the brightness of the sound as compared to my Denon 5803!!
Have not used it enough to find the bad things yet.

The receiver is packed with features. Especially like the internet radio. All adjustments are shown on TV allowing you to hide the receiver because you do not need to see the display. Comments about Onkyo TX-NR809 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:
I upgraded this receiver from my previous Onkyo TX-SR876 because I have a 5.1 home theater set-up with a 3-D HDTV and that receiver couldn't pass-thru the 3-D signal to my TV.
I have tested everything this receiver has to offer except the ISF calibration. I have been using this receiver for the last 3 weeks and I have NO complaints about it.
The set-up was straight forward but I would recommend going to the Audyssey website before audio calibration. The Audyssey website gives you better information on calibrating.
The DLNA networking works flawlessly, it found my PC and songs on the network without problems, and the songs sound MUCH better via this method as opposed to using Window Media Center thru my Xbox.
I am no audiophile but even though this receiver has less power and isn't as heavy as my TX-SR876 i feel that the sound through this receiver is better. This may be due to the enhanced Audyssey calibration that this receiver has.
Just Buy It Already!
