Designed and built with the serious home theater buff in mind, the TX-NR809 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver from Onkyo offers advanced processing, bountiful connections, future-proof 3D video and ARC support, networking readiness and a boast-worthy THX Select2 Plus certification. Enjoy an enveloping sound field that will catapult you right into the action of a movie, help to create an immersive world for your video games, and reproduce the detail of your favorite musical passages. The TX-NR809 offers eight HDMI 1.4a inputs for your HD sources as well as a Marvell Qdeo chip that can upscale to ultra-high resolution 4K video.

It doesn't end there -- this receiver doubles as the new resident DJ for your living room. By connecting it to your internet connection you've just opened up a gateway to internet radio stations like Pandora or Mediafly, as well as the ability to stream audio from your PC. On the front panel, a drop-down panel reveals audio controls and A/V inputs for easy connection of your iPod, digital camera, or USB flash drive. Whether you're watching an all-digital Blu-ray disc or enjoy an analog source like a DVD movie, pristine quality is ensured by the unit's high quality HQV Vida processor and independent ISF calibration for each source.

Audiophiles will appreciate the option for bi-amping, while additional features include 7.2 multichannel pre-outs, multi-zone audio, and top notch construction. Your new TX-NR809 is armed with a massive transformer, symmetrical L/R channels, separate power and pre-amp blocks, and a highly rigid chassis provide a solid foundation to prepare it for audio performance to blow you away. For a powerful blend of features and reliable A/V performance, look no further than the TX-NR809.

7.2 Channel Surround Sound
A realistic, cinematic experience is yours with the 135-watts per channel TX-NR809 that offers support for a 7.2-channel system. It can provide enveloping surround sound with high fidelity audio for your favorite movies, music and games. Since it's also equipped with dual subwoofer pre-outs, you can enjoy additional heart-pumping bass to support your movies and music.
8 HDMI 1.4a Inputs With 3D and ARC
An array of connectivity options includes 8 HDMI 1.4a (one on the front panel), 2 component video, 4 S-Video, one PC hookup, and 5 composite video inputs. If you're connecting by HDMI, the 1.4a specification means this receiver can carry 3D video and an Audio Return Channel (ARC). If you also have a 3D-ready display, 3D-ready cable and 3D glasses, you're on your way to enjoy wraparound visuals with 3D Blu-ray discs and gaming. Support for ARC means you can send audio data from your TV "upstream" to the receiver to eliminate the need for a separate audio connection.
Marvell Qdeo 4K Upscaling
The TX-NR809 can upscale your standard video source materials like 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p all the way up to 4K x 2K (3840 x 2160). Upscaling is powered by a video chip from Marvell Qdeo, a video processor that utilizes algorithms designed to eliminate video noise and artifacts like "jaggies" and feathering. If you have a compatible widescreen display, this means your Blu-ray discs and DVDs will achieve more detail and cinematic picture quality.
Stream PC Audio and Internet Radio
This receiver connects to your home internet connection or home PC. It provides access to internet radio sources like Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, Slacker, Sirius/XM Internet Radio, MediaFly and vTuner with high fidelity audio reproduction. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 platform and includes a DLNA certification for media streaming.
Audyssey DSX and Dolby Dolby Pro Logic IIz
With support for Audyssey DSX, you can incorporate "front wide" speakers in place of surround back speakers to achieve a wider soundstage. Audyssey DSX can also reconfigure this receiver's surround back channels to offer "front height" channels. These can carry ambient non-directional audio for a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Dolby Pro Logic IIz offers a similar "front height" speaker option that works to give you an even more immersive home theater experience.
Four DSP Audio Gaming Modes
For hardcore gamers, this receiver also offers four different DSPs tailored to different types of video games. Choose from rock, sports, action and role playing modes to customize your gaming experience whether you're playing 3D or 2D games.
Audyssey MultEQ XT Room Correction and Speaker Calibration
Audyssey MultEQ XT is an advanced room correction technology with high resolution filters for satellite speakers and subwoofers. By gathering frequency and time domain measurements from up to eight positions in the listening area, this provides clear, well-balanced, and natural sound.
iPod Ready via USB or Optional Dock
The USB port offers a direct digital connection for your iPod, or you can plug it into the optional iPod dock (UP-A1) to incorporate your portable music library. If you want to experience HD Radio you can purchase the Onkyo HD Radio receiver (UP-HT1) which also plugs into the universal port. HD Radio is an additional signal that both AM and FM stations can include along with their convention broadcasts. The content can be anything from news to music to tags that can tell you the title and artist of a song that's playing.

This is my first receiver of this caliber, so I have nothing really to compare it to. I upgraded from an old Sony HTIB 5.1, which had no inputs and only played DVDs.

I paired it with an Onkyo SKS-HT870 7.1 Speaker system and a Samsung UN55D7000LFXZA 3D TV.

The first thing, taking it out of the box, man this thing is huge (51 lbs) and has lots of connectors and buttons. So setting it up, my cabinet was 1/16th too narrow to slide it in and had to remove all the upper drawers to get it in. I also mounted two 80mm fans to push air into the cabinet, although I am a bit wary of the heat generated.

The setup and connection as pretty easy for a beginner, although I am tweaking it all the time to get the best setup. The 7.1 speakers work great and the HDMI control works well with the TV. I run a Play station 3 for the 3D video through High-speed HDMI cables.

Overall my setup works well, although I have noticed a few quirks with the 809. Namely, I have setup the Uverse box to work directly with the TV when the AVR is in standby, when first switching on the TV and Uverse box, I have to cycle their power once to get the audio to work, secondly when switching on the Tuner, the TV switches on occasionally. Also the Tuner is not as sensitive as my previous Sony and will probably have to boost my FM signal.

The Audio Return Channel works great and gives me 5.1 back from the TV using Netflix. I think there could be some minor improvements, probably through firmware, although that could just be me not fully understanding the layout yet.

I looked as some higher end speakers, although with the TV and 809; fell out of my budget, so I will work on this in time.

I am not expert Audiophile, however, I could not fault this unit on any of the sound quality or clarity. As an amateur Audiophile, it has taken me some time to setup the finer points of the unit, but so far the instructions have been easy for me to understand.

The build quality is really good and cannot find anything that I would change.

I did look at other AVRs but through and through this unit got many good reviews and had everything that I needed.

There have been some questions about Onkyo's support from others, however online and through the different forums; I have found everything I need.

I would not hesitate to buy this unit again and would recommend it based on my experience. I did engage an Audiophile to examine my setup and he noted that he could not see or hear anything that he would criticize about the setup, so here is hoping I made a good decision in the long run.

I just bought this receiver and after setup it worked great. Great sound, great features. My only concern was that the HDMI ports seemed a little loose. But it worked fine so I didn't think anything of it. However, later in the day, the video kept cutting in and out. I reached in the back and wiggled the HDMI output cable and the port that was loose from the beginning was now too loose to give a constant signal. Returning back to BH for a refund.

Mostly happy with product, but, but....

      In review (By Josahua):
"Has 3 zones (need amp for the 3rd zone) and whole house feature to play the same output to all three zones (without delay between zones)."

This is not true for "NET"-source, zone 1 is far behing on zone 2/3 sound (so much that I cannot use "Whole House Mode" with "NET" source. FM-Turner and analoque sources don't have same issue. Some improvement can be seen with "Direct"-mode on zone 1 (main speakers)

Works great with my polk audio speakers in my home theatre. The menu setup and option were easy to use by viewing them directly on my 65 LED TV. Using my IPhone I installed the free APP and can control the receiver with it.

The receiver is packed with features. Especially like the internet radio. All adjustments are shown on TV allowing you to hide the receiver because you do not need to see the display. Has 3 zones (need amp for the 3rd zone) and whole house feature to play the same output to all three zones (without delay between zones).

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR809 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

I upgraded this receiver from my previous Onkyo TX-SR876 because I have a 5.1 home theater set-up with a 3-D HDTV and that receiver couldn't pass-thru the 3-D signal to my TV.

I have tested everything this receiver has to offer except the ISF calibration. I have been using this receiver for the last 3 weeks and I have NO complaints about it.

The set-up was straight forward but I would recommend going to the Audyssey website before audio calibration. The Audyssey website gives you better information on calibrating.

The DLNA networking works flawlessly, it found my PC and songs on the network without problems, and the songs sound MUCH better via this method as opposed to using Window Media Center thru my Xbox.

I am no audiophile but even though this receiver has less power and isn't as heavy as my TX-SR876 i feel that the sound through this receiver is better. This may be due to the enhanced Audyssey calibration that this receiver has.
