For an immersive surround sound experience and solid foundation to any home theater setup, look no further than the Onkyo HT-S3400 5.1 Home Theater System. This system includes a receiver and six speakers, delivering 660 watts of audio power for your movies, music and games. An array of inputs and outputs include four HDMI 1.4 inputs that support 3D content, so in addition to surround sound you can immerse yourself in the realistic, wraparound visuals of 3D content all in the comfort of your living room. It also carries an Audio Return Channel so that content can be directly received by your HDTV's tuner to be sent "upstream" without another cable.
The HT-S3400 offers decoding for several Dolby and DTS audio codecs including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, which both can deliver multi-channel lossless audio for a wider, more detailed sound field. These two are also bit-for-bit the equivalent of the master recordings. With Dolby Pro Logic II, you can enjoy simulated 5.1-channel audio from your stereo audio sources for a natural, seamless surround sound experience. For gaming, Onkyo has included four DSP modes to customize your experience based on what type of game you're playing. This system also employs 192kHz/24-bit Burr Brown D/A converters for all channels for high resistance to clock jitter.
With Audyssey Dynamic Volume and EQ, you can enjoy an optimized audio experience. These work to ensure a consistent bass response, tonal balance and sound effect as well as smoothing out volume fluctuations so you can enjoy an optimized dynamic range. This way you won't have to reach for the remote during loud commercials or quiet dialogue scenes in your favorite movies, because your home theater system will even these out for you.
Connect your iPod or iPhone with the optional docking cradle so you can widen your entertainment options. It also supports HD Radio, which is an additional signal that AM and FM stations can include along with conventional broadcasts. This can be anything from news to music to "tags" that can tell you the title and artist of a song that's playing. Tags also make it easier to buy the song from the iTunes store. - The HT-S3400 comes with two Audessy sound-enhancing technologies. Onkyo's Advanced Music Optimizer compensates for this lost bit information and to improve the quality of compressed audio signals. - Universal Port for Your iPod or iPhone
- The proprietary Onkyo Universal Port on the rear of the receiver lets you connect the optional UP-A1 dock for your iPod or iPhone. This universal port accepts audio and video signals through the same cable that sends a power supply from the receiver to your devices. You'll enjoy more connectivity with less cable clutter.
- Crossover Adjustment
- You decide at which frequency the subwoofer takes over. You can set it at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 150, or 200 Hz to optimize your audio.
- Overlaid OSD via HDMI
- The HT-S3400 makes changing settings easy with the overlaid on-screen display (OSD). On-screen setup menus appear overlaid on the video images you're watching so that you can make adjustments instantly, without switching back and forth from a blank screen background.

I am currently using my HT-S3400 5.1 set up for my computer, which I use as my entertainment unit. The system's sound is beautiful, the bass is extreme. I have yet to use the system at maximum output as I haven't needed to.I am music lover and have a very critical ear of sound quality, for the price you pay and the quality I definitely recommending getting this system.The only thing I may add is that you might need to get some extra speaker cables, I have a small/medium sized room which after swapping the cables around i could use what was in the box. Definitely problematic if you were using this system for a large lounge. Still get's the full stars as I can't imagine anything close for the [$] I spent.

I have this unit as a between my blue ray and my 1080P hd set. I cannot comment, as yet, on the sound, becuase I can get only one, the center, speaker to work. I find the manual very confusing and one needs to be a technical expert in order to understand it. I am hoping that I can find someone who can "walk" me through this problem. Product excellent reputation but sure would like to be able to hear all the speakers. Been four days since I emailed tech support, but, as yet, no reply.

For the price, this system cannot be beat. The system does come with some pretty cheap speaker wire so an upgrade was in order. I bought this system as a starter so I can slowly upgrade the pieces but was impressed with the quality of sound.
-things to note:
The sub is passive but still puts out a good amount of bang in small to medium sized room
There are no USB ports
Both of these negatives are not that important to me. I would defiantly recommend this system

First, it's just a really great value. This system delivers very good audio for a medium sized room. It's simple to get it all setup and is worth every penny. The only downside is perhaps the quality and length of the speaker cables. The subwoofer cable could be a good bit longer, and the rear surround speakers need a bit more length. The front and center speakers have plenty of length. The quality of the cable is a bit low as well but you can buy a reel of higher quality cable and increase quality and distance for very little extra. That's really about the only complaint, although maybe the plastic speaker enclosures could be better, but even that isn't much concern on such a well-priced system.

I bought this one to replace a 10-12 year Onkyo system. I was a little concerned that the subwoofer wasn't powered but it has performed flawlessly. I am extremely happy with it. The only thing I think could improve it would be for Onkyo to make a smaller case.
BHPhoto's price was the best I could find. They always ship fast and pack it extremely well.

I bought this because I wanted a higher quality system that could play Blu-rays with true 5.1 sound (my old system was a basic DVD Home Theater that couldn't decode DTS, and didn't have an HDMI input for streaming decoded sound). So far it works great, and has a good number of sound modes if you want to fine tune the audio processing. The one thing its missing is the ability to convert video signals (if you give it a composite input, you need to connect composite to the TV, and the same with component and HDMI) I knew that when I bought the system, but if you just want the single HDMI hookup with the TV, you'll need to get one of the more expensive receivers.

Used with 42" LCD TV. Was disappointed when unwrapping the system to find the subwoofer is passive. However, after hooking it up, the bass was plenty for 12ft x 12ft room it resides in. The sound from the rest of the speakers have good clarity and depth.

I've been nothing but impressed by this system. It performs even better than I expected. As a first time home-theater system owner, the amount of calibration and customization is well appreciated. I haven't tested any other video in to HDMI out, but thus far the HDMI has been flawless.
The only con I can think of is that it doesn't have a COAX in for cable, that way I can switch on my STB and not have to change the TV input as well. Not a big con at all, however. Cable conversion isn't exactly the easiest, given all the standards.
At the price point, this system seems unbeatable until the next version comes out.
