The 1.5TB My Book Essential External Desktop Hard Drive from Western Digital brings the speed of USB 3.0 to your fingertips. With bus transfer speeds up to 5Gbps*, it only takes a sliver of time to access and save media files or back up your computer. This sleek, high capacity drive includes password protection for added privacy and security.
Preformatted with the NTFS file system for use with Windows systems, Mac users can reformat the drive via Disk Utility. As Mac OS X doesn't offer native support for USB 3.0, it will work as a USB 2.0 device when used with a Mac. The drive comes with the WD SmartWare software suite for data backup management.
Note! * 5Gbps is the maximum theoretical data transfer speed of USB 3.0. The actual data transfer speed can vary and is typically lower.

Comments about Western Digital 1.5TB My Book Essential External Desktop Hard Drive:
I was looking for a secondary back up to my main external hard drive which is Buffalo brand (which I had been using as a manual storage device - dragging and dropping files over) The My Book started off great and I was impressed with the software's ability to recognize new files and update automatically. About a month into using the My Book there was an option to update the software/driver - ever since then the product has not been functioning properly.
The software no longer recognizes that I have updated files - will no longer automatically back up and when I manually try to start the back up process it times out/freezes and states that a "partial back up was accomplished"
I am now using the My Book to manually store my files which means I am dragging each file over individually and have to keep a mental note of which files I have moved. Works fine as a storage device but the software is HORRIBLE. I had no luck finding a fix for this problem but I am certain it happened when I updated the software/driver as was recommended by the software upon start up.
