The Toshiba 500GB Canvio USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Black with Silver Accents) offers a digital storage capacity of 500GB and blazing transfer speeds up to 5 Gbps. It's compact, bus-powered, and has an internal shock sensor and anti-slip rubberized side grip for added durability and protection. Since it's bus-powered, you can easily take it wherever your laptop goes. For security, Toshiba includes preloaded backup software and 256-bit hardware encryption. You can customize your backup preferences and schedule, set a password and the Canvio will even remind you when it's running out of backup space. If needed, the USB 3.0 interface is backward compatible with a USB 2.0 interface. It's ready to go right out of the box and is certified to work with Windows XP, Vista and 7.

depends what you use it for. It comes with software for backups for PC. I wanted to make a clone and that isn't really what it is designed for, but if you want a full backup of your personal stuff this is probably really great.
Only thing to improve is probably information how to setup the included software, however it is very straightforward.

I bought this drive to for the sole purpose of encrypting back-up files. Drive works just like any other disk drive via Windows Explorer, but not for encryption. For encryption Toshiba provides a bad piece of custom software with a horrible user interface. It asks for me to enter my encryption password (twice, which is good), but then fails to copy and fails to encrypt anything. Apparently this bad application provides no means for browsing the encrypted file directoy(s) and does not provision restore to alternate destination under user control. Just horrible.....do not buy for the purposes of encryption. I also bought the LaCie LARTU35500
500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable, and it is great for encryption.

I use this to drive to store photos and for backup. The USB 3.0 is very fast and with the included software I do not need to worry about initiating a backup. Takes care of it on its own. Transferring RAW photos is a quick and easy with the USB 3.0.

This hd unit seems to be a good option for storing docs, pix and media. I bought this one to give to a client with her media backed up on it. Since it's only a usb connection, I wouldn't suggest using it to work from. But if you need a small storage unit, this one works well.

I have had the drive only 2 weeks. It arrived in perfect condition. As usual, B&H order processing & shipping is unsurpassed. I do not yet own a computer with USB3 but my next one will have it. On USB2, the drive is as quick as others I've used.
Note: The included backup software is on no interest to me, so when first connecting the drive, I held down the 'shift' key to prevent it from auto-starting, made a new directory, moved all Toshiba software there.
I will enjoy this drive even more when I have a longer cable for it.

SO far with the drive it has been working great! loaded up all my files onto it and it loaded fairly fast, wish i had some USB 3.0 slots on my pc but at least whenever i do upgrade i can make use of them for the higher speeds.
One thing i did not like about the drive was the built in software that would, once connected, try to automatically back up my whole drive and i did not want that. All i Did was create a new folder and place the program in there and that took care of the problem.
