The Stylus Pro 3880 Ink Jet Printer Designer Edition from Epson lets you produce high-quality professional grade prints right from your own computer. Thanks to its cost-saving large ink cartridges and small footprint, the 3880 Ink Jet Printer is the perfect solution for in-house photo printing. The 4 black cartridges, including a light black and a light light black produce black and white photos of the highest quality. Epson's three-level black technology simultaneously uses black, light black, and light light black ink to produce an accurate gray balance. Unlike other photo printers, the 3880 features auto-switching Matte and Photo Black cartridges, so you won't have to worry about which one to use.
The 8 pigments are delivered onto the paper in amounts as small as 3.5 picoliters while the ink-repelling coating ensures accurate dot placement. Epson's Proprietary Active Meniscus Control further enhances the ink delivery's accuracy by controlling the curvature of every ink droplet within each nozzle before it's released onto the media.

THIS PRINTER REPLACES MY OLDER EPSON 1800 AND EPSONN 2200 PRINTERS. BOTH PROVIDED EXCELLENT RESULTS OVER THE YEARS, BUT ANNUAL MAINTENANCE/CLEANING COSTS OF $120.00-$150.00 MADE THEM REPLACEABLE. ALSO BOTH OLDER PRINTERS USE TOO MUCH INK AND ALWAYS I AM REPLACING/CHARGING NEW CARTRIDGES.
I HAVE PRINTED ABOUT 200 PICTURES ON THE EPSON 3880 TO DATE PRIMARILY USING THE ULTRA PREMIUM LUSTER PAPER AND ULTRA PREMIUM GLOSSY PAPER.
ALL 8.5x11 AS I LIKE LARGER PRINTS. ANNUALLY I WILL PRINT 2,000-3,000 PICTURES USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 5, APERTURE 2, ADOBE LIGHTROOM 3, AND NSX 2. ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS DELIVER EXCELLENT REULTS WITH THE PRINTER PROFILES PROVIDED BY EPSON AS WEL AS THE NEW INKS UTILIZED IN THE 3880.. COLORS ARE BRIGHTER, PICTURES ARE SHARPER, CONTRAST BETWEEN HIGHLIGHTS AND SHADOWS ALL CONTRIBUTE TO MUCH BETTER PICTURE QUALITY THAN MY OTHER PRINTERS.
ALSO FAR SUPERIOR TO MY CANON 9000 PRINTER AND SEVERAL CHEAPER HP PRINTERS.
SETUP WAS EASY AND I WAS PRINTING HIGH QUALITY PICTURES WITHIN ONE HOUR. NO ISSUES WITH SOFTWARE AND CURRENT PRINTER PROFILES. USE A MAC BOOK PRO 17" NOTEBOOK FOR SETUP OF THE SOFTWARE. STARTUP WAS SMOOTH AND EASY.
PRINTER IS LARGER THAN THE EPSON 1800 AND 2200 BOTH IN SIZE AND WEIGHT. 43 POUNDS OUT OF THE BOX.
LARGE INK REFILLS WILL SAVE MUCH MONEY OVER TIME BUT NOT HAVING TO CHANGE INK CARTRIDGES TOO OFTEN AND THE WASTING INK RECHARGING.

OK, this may take awhile to write. While I love the quality of the prints that this printer produces, I question the build quality.
I bought this to go with my R2400 since my photography business has grown. The R2400 has been a workhorse for me for over 6 or 7 years. I bought the 3880 in October of 2010. By June, I had to call for service. It gave an error message. Epson promptly replaced it. I boxed up the original and they sent me a replacement. As soon as i set up the replacement, i found out it was DOA. I called, they apologized and sent another one. So, when fedex delivered the second replacement, I sent back two broken ones. I opened the second replacement and guess what? It had another service message. Epson apologized and told me to box it up and they were shipping out another replacement. I questioned them about what they were sending me and was told refurbs. even though they were very nice and apologetic it was still a PITA. I got the third replacement and it has worked since June of 2010. Now, my business has grown even more and i've just ordered a 7890 being delivered by 18 wheeler tomorrow. I have been really busy this Christmas season with family sessions and my High school seniors. My 3880 quit again today. I called Epson and was told that I was *hi* out of luck my warranty had expired. I told them that I am not so sure of Epson quality anymore and that i am considering refusing the shipment tomorrow of the new 7890 at this point. Finally, the Epson person finally agreed to send me out another replacement since I explained to them that i was told that my warranty would start over from the 3rd replacement refurb. They assured me that this was not how they do it but that they would make an exception since I was told this. Seriously I was told this at the time when I raised my concern over them sending me out 3 replacement refurbs to replace one new printer under warranty.
I am just really questioning Epson 3880 build quality. How the heck can they be up to par when i am now going on my 4th one? Problems mostly include paper feeding mechanisms and other things that i am not aware of.

The 3880 was easy to set up and I got great prints right off the bat. The best thing was the B&H price coupled with a $250 rebate. Take away the price of the full load of ink you get with this printer and the printer itself only costs you about $650! I'm replacing a 3800 that printed hundreds of prints over the last 6 years and only recently developed a clogged magenta nozzle. I guess that printer cost less than a $100 a year to own not counting ink and was trouble free for 6 years.

My first 'large format' printer - it was super easy to set up and to install on my Windows 7 machine. I've only printed some 4x6 photos but they've come out fantastic! Looking forward to printing some posters and genealogy charts. I'm slightly disappointed in not being able to print from "roll paper" but that's something I can live without.
I HIGHLY recommend this printer.

Unpacking is a detailed procedure. I think I counted 22 or 23 individual pieces of tape sometimes in obscure locations. Just be careful. Setup was pretty easy although my initial attempts to get a test print resulted in getting stuck in a loop that required forcing a shutdown and restarting again. After getting the system up again the process was smooth.
All I have done is a couple of prints but the color is really close and quality is great. The B&W prints are great!! I think the 3880 will be just what I was looking for. The future will see what the price per print ends up being.
My only caution is to those that want to print both documents and photos. It takes quite some time to shift from photo black to matt black for printing on plain paper.

The Stylus Pro 3880 Designer Edition was easy to setup, I just began printing.
It requires a little color management work like any printer. I ran a few prints, beautiful color. I will be using it to print, frame and sell my images.

I have been using this printer with Adobe CS5 for about a week. Loading paper from the "rear" loader is very finicky. If you don't load it perfectly straight you will get a prompt to reload the paper. I also find the printed images are noticeably darker then what is viewed on my monitor. I used Colormunki Photo to create profiles for both my monitor (IMac 27" OS Lion) and for the various Epson papers that I print with, but the issue persists. Epson was unable to provide any useful assistance. The problem was evident even when I used the Epson ICC profiles that came with the Epson drivers.

Prints from the 3880 are phenomenal, like nothing I've ever seen (Canson Baryta, pure white.) B/W has a range of black hues.
A high-end product for those who want to produce prints of exceptional beauty.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Ink Jet Printer Designer Edition:
The Stylus Pro 3880 is a fantastic printer. I have always preferred larger prints (16 x 20), and the 3880 produces very colorful prints up to 17x22. The printer was very easy to set up, and in very little time, I was printing and framing some of my better prints. What is very discouraging, however, is that within 2 months of purchasing the printer, it stopped working. I had to take it into a repair service center to have it repaired. In addition to whatever else they did to repair it, they also had to replace the print head.[...] You would think that if you paid [$] for a printer that it would last longer than 2 months. Hopefully, everything will be okay from now on. I still enjoy my printer and just hope it doesn't break dwon again in the next 2 months. If it does,it is still under warranty. Also, I didn't purchased it from B&H Photo. I bought it here in Atlanta.

No issues with the quality of the prints, especially on Epson papers. Other manufacturer's papers will need tweaking, even with the correct ICC profiles for those papers downloaded, but after a couple of test prints you know what to expect and how to compensate in Photoshop.
I knew in advance that the printer didn't handle rolls, which I only use infrequently anyway. But it's hard to understand why they didn't make it an accessory at least.
The firmware update feature will only work when the printer is hardwired with a USB cable. I've got an outstanding, very fast wireless network, which works great for printing large files. They call the software a "Remote Panel" and give you the option of updating the firmware through it. Then under troubleshooting they tell you to use the USB cable.

I upgraded from an Epson 2400. I enjoy printing my own images that I sell and display in galleries. The 3880 is very impressive and simple to use. I've printed on glossy, matte, and luster paper and found the quality very impressed.

I use this printer to print my own photos. I compared prints from the 3880 to my other printer and the quality was obvious. I am more pleased than i expected to be. Why did I wait so long to make this purchase.
Set up was straight forward and quick. The first document I printed was a success. Haven't printed enough to empty any ink cartridges yet but ink usage seems to be very reasonable.
The printer is quiet and quick. Love it.

I still consider myself a novice but decided to take the plunge on this printer. It was a good deal with the $300 rebate for the Designer Edition which made it cheaper than the standard edition. The setup was easy and quick. After loading all the software I was able to go right to printing from CS5 without any issues. Using Epson 8x10 Pro paper I was able to get amazing details to print including fine spider webs around a flower. The color match from screen to print so far has been flawless. My main use is going to be for personal and doing prints for sale and some photo restoration work down the road.
