The Silver Efex Pro 2 Software from Nik Software is a powerful plug-in application for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom, and Apple Aperture. It gives you all the tools necessary to convert color images from your digital camera to stunning black and white photographs.
While many cameras offer built in support for shooting in black and white -- and any image editing program worth its salt can perform a standard grayscale conversion -- simply desaturating a color image can often produce a flat and boring black and white conversion.
Silver Efex Pro gives you the tools you need to bring life to your monochromatic visions. It can simulate several types of colored lens filters, and can emulate many popular black and white film stocks -- including popular films by Ilford and Kodak!
You'll also be able to add borders to your images -- perfect for wedding shooters and fine art photographers alike. You can selectively restore color to an object, making it visually pop out of the rest of the image. Dynamic brightness and soft contrast adjustment allow you to perfect the look and feel of your images. Thanks to a powerful history browser you will be free to experiment with all the tools the software provides -- there is no adjustment that you can make to an image that cannot be easily undone.
Silver Efex Pro 2 is compatible with the following host applications: Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.6, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.x, Apple Aperture 2.1.4, and Apple Aperture 3.x.

Comments about Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 Software (Academic License):
After using PS5 for a number of years and trying to control the midtones of my black and white photos, I recently ordered Silver Efex Pro 2 (Mac) to see if all the positive reviews I had read were true.
Upon installing the plug-in for PS5, I opened my first photo and started using the presets that came with the program. I was immediately impressed with the different types and controls that each of the presets had in it. Quickly though, I discovered the more minute controls on the right side and started manipulating the shot. I have often not been happy with my B&W final product using just Photoshop. I have tried a number of different techniques that I had read about in PS as well as in Lightroom 3, but felt the mid-tones always had too much contrast in them in when I was done.
Enter Efex Pro 2. Quickly, using the individual sliders (Global Adjustments, Selective Adjustments, Color Filter, etc.) I started to get the fine tuning that had been eluding me. The controls are very intuitive, and I would suggest to anyone who is new to this program to start with the presets, finding the one that works the best for you, and then experimenting with individual slides to fine tune.
As a bonus, there are borders that come with the program. Not that I use these often, but it is nice to have them there when I feel the need to use them.

This is my first experience with any Nik Software product. I was happy to find that SEP2 is easy to navigate and the controls are intuitive.
I don't like to spend a lot of time processing images. This software is helpful for achieving the results I want quickly.

Comments about Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 Software (Academic License):
This has amazing capabilities for serious black and white photographers. That said the integration with Lightroom is lacking. Once you save it there's no going back to make changes except to the newly saved, already edited file. This negates the whole advantage of parametric (non destructive) editing of Lightroom itself. You can, however, go back and change things if you did your work with Silver Efex on a smart object from within Photoshop. In fairness to Nik they apparently are not allowed access from Adobe to provide the parametric editing flexibility of Lightroom itself. Bottom line: great product but cumbersome workflow going back and forth between LR and PS.
