Sony's PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX HD Camcorder (without SxS Card) is the impressive successor to the popular PMW-EX1. While retaining everything that was right about the previous camera, Sony has listened to its professional users and taken several steps forward, not only improving ergonomics and convenience, but bringing a whole new set of features to the world's only full HD compact camcorder.
Like its predecessor, the PMW-EX1R's core is its three 1/2"-type CMOS sensors and 14x Fujinon zoom lens. This heavyweight imaging combo captures full 1920 x 1080 hi-def images to solid state SxS PRO memory cards (sold separately) at multiple bit rates, resolutions and frame rates. Whether you're shooting weddings, documentaries or feature films, there's a frame rate and resolution for you--from 60fps and native 23.98p recording at 720p, to 1fps at 1080i.
But along with its already proven imaging abilities and professional workflow, the PMW-EX1R expands its usability by offering DVCAM SD recording, XDCAM HD compatibility, and HDMI output. That means no more time-consuming downconverting or transcoding to work in different formats or with different recording and playback devices. Other new features add even more convenience and flexibility, including a high-resolution 1.23MP viewfinder, Cache Record, one-click S&Q button, auto iris, and even image inversion for flipping the image while shooting with a 35mm adapter. Make no mistake: the Sony PMW-EX1R is the first HD compact camcorder that truly does have it all.
The SP mode supports 1440 x 1080 resolution at 25Mbs, which provides compatibility with HDV 1080i products. Footage recorded in this SP mode can be seamlessly integrated into HDV-compatible editing systems by transferring the stream from the camcorder via the i.LINK (HDV) interface.
The PMW-EX1R also supports 25Mbs DVCAM recording in either PAL or NTSC modes, again providing seamless integration into existing DVCAM workflows, offering ultimate flexibility worldwide.
When the focus ring is in the front position, the lens works in the same way as a typical auto focus lens on a handheld camcorder. In this case, either manual or auto focus mode can be selected by the AF/MF switch on the lens. On the other hand, when the focus ring is set to the back position, the lens has an absolute focus position, and works in the same way as interchangeable-lens cameras, which professional users are familiar with.
*In 1440 x 1080/23.98P (SP) mode, images are handled as 23.98P and recorded as 59.94i signals through means of 2-3 pulldown.
The transition progress can be checked using an indicator displayed on the LCD monitor. In addition, a start timer function is also available for the Shot Transition function, helping to prevent operators from missing a shot. This function is very useful when complex camera settings are required during the scene transition--for example, when shooting subjects moving from the background to the foreground of a scene.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
This camera produces beautiful video, and gives the operator superb control. It integrates easily into our work-flow. The placement of controls is well thought out and easy to learn. If you are going to hand hold it, give some thought to stabilization.
The versatility in formats and tools for preserving continuity are a welcome improvement over some earlier HDV cameras. We like the "hooks" that allow connecting the meta data with the script in a straightforward manner.
I'd recommend this to producers who want a reliable, versatile unit and who don't need interchangeable lenses.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
Yes, yes - large sensor video cameras are all the rage. Except if you're a documentary cameraman like myself who is used to having fast, functional zoom lenses at their disposal in order to capture life's fleeting moments. 5D? F3? Even the AF100 - I've missed more shots then I catch as I'm fumbling around with lenses, adapters, ND filters etc.. Are you kidding me? The EX1R is the best camcorder in it's class. Sure, it doesn't sit on your shoulder the way you want it to - but for the price and a little ingenuity, this thing is plenty stable and produces beautiful imagery. The image may not be quite as 'cinematic' as the large senors cameras, but you will feel good about NOT missing the best shots of the day.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
Packed with so many great features, this camera is the best in its class and is ideal for documentary use. Throw it on a shoulder brace and you've got a versatile rig that doesn't weigh much. I've used both the EX1R and EX3 and I have to say, I prefer the former because of it's smaller size and additional features such as the S&Q hot buttons & cache recording.
My one big issue is with the top handle design. This is the 2nd EX1 i've owned and BOTH handles cracked near where the handle curves near the top record button. This is a design flaw but Sony refuses to acknowledge this and also refuses to fix it under warranty. Very disappointing customer service Sony.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
I love the EX Cameras from Sony. I've used an EX-3 a lot so I knew what to expect.
My 2 complaints on the EX-1r are: 1.The camera's colors from the factory were very brown and muddy. But was an easy fix from finding forums and using other peoples picture profiles. It would be nice to pull it out of the box and start shooting the video that it's capable of.
2. I would like the Peaking for the fold out viewfinder to look more like the EX-3s. I've never been nervous about focus with a 3, but with the 1 I sometimes feel like I'm wingin' it. especially in the shade.
Overall it's a great camera.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
Very nice camera for the price.
Love the sxs card experience.
Camera is built well.
The lens is good but not great...a bit on the cheap side.
Needed to buy for my SXS clients.
Went with the EX1R vs the EX3 mainly because of price and I don't see myself needing to add different lenses. If you think you need to have a variety of glass, the EX3 maybe the way to go.

Comments about Sony PMW-EX1R XDCAM EX Full HD Camcorder (without SxS Card):
For documentary or any real-time situation, this camera is my choice. Small enough to travel with yet feature-rich to help ensure you achieve great quality shots in a vast variety of situations. The 1/2" chip is a great balance between deep focus (stopped down wide) and shallow focus (punched in open aperature). The Fujinon lens is my favorite camcorder lens by far.
