I LOVE my Canon T3i. I'm an author by career, but have always loved the art of photography and do blend the two when I can.
The Canon T3i is my first DSLR after using point and shoots and my iPhone for too long since my old SLR got put on the shelf. The T3i was recommended by a fashion photographer friend who's son, a filmmaker, has the T3i. The image quality is amazing with 18 megapixels, once I learned my way around the menus and got the hang of everything, it became really easy to get great shots. I've used the swivel screen more times than you'd think - an incredibly handy feature, especially when you're using the self timer since you can see the shot setup in the screen when turned 180. My only cons are what everyone else is saying - the a/f is a little noisy and it can take a bit too long to focus. I've been doing a lot of low-light shots and will say the quality is great, once you can get it to focus. A few times I converted to manual instead. Still, I love this camera - for the price, it's amazing.
Personally, I find the battery to last a long time and I do like the stabilization feature, as I'm sure it's made a difference in the low light situations.
As for the video - I've only done a little so far but plan on doing a lot more with it.

Item arrived defective. Right out of the box, I mounted the lens to the body taking care to point the body downwards to avoid getting dust onto the sensor. Done in a clean envoronment (not dusty warehouse, etc..). Unfortunately, images had dark spots on them. Spots were only visible when taken using long exposures. The best way to reproduce it is to set it to shutter priority mode, set to 1 sec exposure, focus on a white wall, then take a photo while deliberately sweeping the camera slowly across the white wall.
There will be multiple black spots which will be in focus. Since the shot was taken while sweeping across a wall, the image should be blurred. The fact that the spots are in focus indicate that there's dust/blemish on the sensor!!
B&H exchanged the item for me. Received my second camera kit and had same issue. B&H exchanged it yet again. Received my 3rd camera kit and it had the same issue.
B&H agreed that I should send to Canon for a cleaning and if it didn't solve the issue, they will exchange it for me (yet again).
Sent it in to Canon for a cleaning. Even after professionally cleaning it, it still had spots.
Called B&H for an exchange and was given the option to exchange or get a refund. I opted for an exchange. I was then passed on to a supervisor and was denied the option to exchange (which was available 5 minutes prior, and agreed upon before the camera was sent to Canon for cleaning).
I have since cleaned it myself and have been able to get rid of the spots. Bottom line, 3 out of 3 NEW camera kits had dirty sensors right out of the box. Unacceptable.
Camera itself takes excellent photos.
I have had another issue with the kit lens (18-135mm IS). The barrel is loose and extends/retracts by gravity alone. Just pointing it downward/upward to take photos at an angle will cause the lens to extend/retract.
I've only had this 3rd camera a couple of months (about 1,000 shots), and it has already been to the Canon service center twice. Once for the cleaning and the second to get the barrel tightened.
All in all, the camera takes superb photos. But the nice photos do not outweigh the problems you will get with this camera. I bought the camera 5 months ago and only have had posession of it for about 2 months. The rest of the time it is either sitting on a UPS truck or at a repair center.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital Camera W/EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:
I learned photography when I was 16 on a Canon AV-1. (And it still works great, 32 years later!) So when it came time to change to dslr after having used several brands of high-end digital point & shoot, I chose Canon again. I hope to have the same relationship with the new Canon as I have with the old one.
Four weeks later, the relationship is progressing nicely. The camera is easy to understand, and it feels great in my hands. The 18-135 has been a great walk-around all-purpose lens. I've done a lot of nature work and one group portrait shoot in the past few weeks with great results. I've also done an all-important bereavement shoot, and the camera performed better than I could have hoped. I had to do NO post-processing at all, and that's what true photography is all about. The camera sees what I see and records what I want recorded. We're becoming very, very good friends, and that's exactly what I was hoping for when I chose it. I'm thrilled with it.

It took me a bit to get used to the menu function, but after I read through the menu and played around with it I am becoming a pro. Love the pics and I love the wide lens with the capability to also zoom to 135. That's a really good lens for the work I do, which is often close up but sometimes I need to get something a bit further away.
The macro function has been a bit hard to figure out; maybe I just need to get a lens to do it, though.
It's a little loud; dunno if I can turn off the "shutter" sound or not (I'm a journalist and like to be unobtrusive if possible)
I don't love the foldout LCD. I'd like it better if it was just in the camera instead of a foldout.
I have yet to try video with it, which is one of the reasons I got it, so we'll see. I'm going to have to jury rig some audio getup which is why it's taking me a while to get around to that.

We wanted a product that was simple but had the added features that this unit offers. At first we were a little anxious but the more we used the carmera the easier it became. The quality of the images are really good and down loading them to our computer is a snap.
Charged the battery when we got the camera and have not had to recharge it since. Good battery life.
We look forward to using the camera on our next trip to Yosemite National Park. Hope to really exercise all the featurs this unit allows.

The camera with my lens is an inseparable whole as far as I am concerned. It fits every desire I had when I bought it. I can more than adequately take landscape, portrait and night shots. I am so excited about my EOS Rebel T3i that I can't wait to use it. It is also a great fit for my MacBook Pro.
I have only used the automatic settings and some of the menu items, but I find them easy to use and the result is a great picture.
There is, however, a great deal to learn. Having said this, one would expect to have to learn a great deal if one wants great memories and quality slide shows and movies.
