Comments about Denon AVR-1612 5.1-Channel AV Surround Receiver:
Coming from a 4 year old Onkyo 7.1 THX receiver, I needed a replacement that met the following requirements:
1) setup mic included
2) speaker banana jack connections instead of spring clips
3) 5.1 surround
Upon initial inspection the receiver was reasonably well thought out. The "included" setup mic did not appear to be included. 4 days after after an inquiry, I was informed that the manufacturer has issued a memo stating that the setup mic was inconspicuously packed INSIDE the shipping styrofoam. Don't throw your packing styrofoam away like I did otherwise you'll go through pains to get a replacement (I still don't have one).
I had my receiver up and running within 10 minutes. This included connecting all 5.1 speakers, three HDMI connections, and an optical audio cable. All connections were well marked and easy to see. The banana clips are spaced farther apart (+/-) than on my Onkyo, making the use of commercial banana clip pairs not an option.
The onscreen setup GUI is reasonably well designed, although the menu structure made it difficult to navigate when trying to customize the system settings after the initial setup.
This receiver also doesn't have switched or non-switched A/C outlets which I was used to on pricier receivers.
Without the setup mic, I had to initially set up the system using defaults, which the onscreen GUI allowed me to do. Setup would have been faster and easier if I had used a setup mic.
