The 77mm UV Protector Filter from Canon is a wise initial investment. It can help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs. A UV filter not only helps minimize the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens.
A UV filter is the best available protection for the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to them as "cheap insurance".
Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters cut through some of the haze in the atmosphere rendering your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.
A UV Protector is probably the most popular UV filter people use. As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times to guard against front element damage but also adds the benefit of rendering your images clearer.

I like using Canon filters (especially for UV that I leave on all the time) because lens cap fits into it without issue, and build quality and performance is top notch.

Comments about Canon 77mm UV Protector Filter:
Far better to protect a $2k lens with a far less expensive filter than to risk salt spray, wind-blown sand, and acid rain killing the front element. Bought one of these for every Canon lens I own, and having been made by Canon, they were expected to be, and were in fact, perfect optically. No degradation of the image whatsoever. In fact, the UV coating actually helps the image in many cases (outdoors, of course), providing richer colors and a greater contrast range.

Who wouldn't want to replace a [$] protective piece instead of a $1,200 lense? This is a necessity for any grade lens to protect it not only from the elements, but from your own klutziness as well.

I bought this product with a new lens and installed it seconds after opening my lens. The construction of the filter is very solid. I would much rather replace this [$] filter vs my $750 lens. It attached easily to my lens and my photos are still crisp.

I bought this to protect some of my expensive glass. Just after getting it, I was shooting at a MLB game. Hot dog with all the fixin's was accidentally smashed right into the front of my lens. This is why I put these on all my lenses.
