Comments about Stanton STR8.150 Professional DJ Turntable:
I bought this deck as a step up from a mid-range Audio Technica deck with an S-shaped arm and elliptical playhead. I don't scratch, but exclusively spin vintage Jamaican vinyl, which is often rife with the type of faults an anomalies that gave my previous deck problems. I needed something much more fault tolerant and skip-resistant, that still used an analog preamp, and decided this deck (with a straight tone arm and spherical playhead) was worth a go.
It's a huge step up in just about every category. It rolls right over the vast majority of the trouble spots that were keeping too much immortal vinyl on the shelf. Its analog pre-amp is absolutely squeaky clean (provided you set the grounding switch properly). And as an added bonus, the sound is way deeper and richer than the A/T unit provided. Replacement/backup cartridges and styli are MUCH more affordable than A/T products. It's very cool looking and the construction seems very solid.
Cons: At 30+ lbs., it's not the world's most portable deck. Personally I don't care but others might. There is no case or optional dust cover so a flight case is indicated (I use the basic Marathon model which does the job just fine). Also, I am far from impressed with the slipmat provided. It just isn't grippy enough and seems like kind of a waste.
