About a month ago, I pulled myself away from my beloved D50 to experience what technology has done in the last 6 years. I was drawn to the D5100 because of the articulating screen. Do you know how many times I got my shirt all muddy trying to get an upward shot of a low lying subject? This proved to be the best feature of the camera, and I would not be surprised to see all of Nikon's cameras with such a device. The camera is smaller than my previous but I don't find it uncomfortable, and I do have large hands. The controls are a little different to accommodate the screen hinge, but it only took a couple of days to get used to it. I would suggest reading Tom Hogan's guide book. I had one for my D50, and I got one for this camera as well. He is straight forward about using the strengths of the camera and avoiding some pitfalls it has. His guidance made me fall in love with my D50. The only negative I found was how the directional pad feels. I has a cheap plastic feel to it. I'm sure it will be ok, as my plastic D50 held up to alot of abuse. The menus are layed out intuitively, and the on screen controls are great. As your ready to shoot, if you want to change a common setting, say, how the camera is metering, you hit the "I" button right by your thumb and scroll with wheel to that item and there you go, your all set.
I could write pages about this camera, but I'll just summarize. This is a great camera for entry level DSLR and would satisfy even a pro-level photographer. I'm just a hobbiest trying to be like a pro, and I love it.
A plug for B and H. I have purchased numerous things from them. I find them professional and they deliver outstanding service. You can't go wrong.

Pros:
- Low light capability
- Easy to use
- Fantastic image quality
- Video at 1080p 30
Cons:
- There is no way to know what focus distance the camera is at. The camera gives no indication of where focus is as a distance. When using liveview in sunlight, it becomes impossible to know where your focus is set.
- Viewfinder not 100% viewing area, so it does not match the 100% view in the live view mode.
- Video capabilities are not fully baked, there is little information displayed.
- Manual settings are awkward, especially for video.
- There is a bug where pictures taken in Live view have a missing right pixel edge.

Mostly I shoot with a 70mm to 300mm zoom lens. I shoot a lot of nature, birds and objects. I have soot moving birds and can't believe the clarity. Color is well balanced and again the sharpness is great.

I´m really happy with this camera, I am not a pro, but after reading the owners manual I could take some nice pics and use most of the features of my D5100.
Its is going to take a while to use it 100% of the features, but I am really happy about it.
LCD is the best of the best!

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera is my upgrade from my D5000. I received my D5100 on May 10 and went on a one week vacation on May 11. Camera performed great. Took over 500 pics of landscapes, zoo animals and caves. Pictures are great quality. In places like a zoo it works better on manual focus due to the fences or screens between you and the animals. It is also better to leave on manual focus in caves because there is not enough light for the auto focus to work. I have only taken a couple of videos, but I definitely like the auto focus ability while videoing --- my D5000 did not have that. I have not had time to play with all the "special effects" that the D5100 has, but I will update my review after I use them. Auto focus can get confused if there are too many subjects to focus on. Built in flash is brighter and better than other cameras I have used. Have not taken any portaits with the built in flash yet, so I do not know if "red eye" will be a problem. If you can't afford thousands for the higher model Digital SLRs, then this is a great camera to buy.

B&H had the best price and I am quite impressed with their service & shipment. I am a long term customer of B&H, having bought equipment from them back in the old days of film. Yes, I am dating myself.
D5100 is an excellent camera, which I purchased for a graduation gift.

This camera is fast and nimble. I wanted to upgrade from my trusty Nikon D40X to a more advanced body. Did all my homework, read all the review and talked to trusted professional photographer friends who recommended the 5100. I was going to sell my 18-105mm lens because I wasn't getting the performance I wanted using the Nikon D40X body. With 6400 ISO I can now take better evening and night shots. The 5100 and lens are a perfect pair, fast, responsive. I also am using the 28-300mm and it is a joy to shoot with using the 5100. Love the way Nikon has rearranged all the info buttons to the right side of the camera, except for the menu button, which makes using the settings much easier. Like that the screen can be hidden away to protect it when not in use. The camera is much more than I hoped for.

Lots of versatility. Exposure bracketing is good, you can program buttons to do what you want - like quickly snap an HDR then back again. One thing I never read anywhere befor I bought it, and was pleasantly surprised with is the built in intervalometer for timelapse shooting. So fun.

I purchased this camera as a back-up/2nd camera. I already had a Nikon D5100, so I knew what I wanted. But I did have questions about what was included (battery, charger, etc.) and I chatted with a customer service rep to be sure I was getting everything I needed. Loved the price! Love the camera! I will definately be doing business with B&H again, I have been for a while now :)

I also own A D90. Yes, the D90 has a solid construction and it feels better in your hand but the additional features and special effects make the D5100 a winner. I love the selective color effect which can be used in stills as well as video. Not great for action because the auto focus is a bit slow. Other than that it would serve as a great back-up camera for a wedding or studio photographer as well as a first DSLR for a beginner.

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is my first SLR, and after a short learning curve and a few adjustments, I am getting great shots with this camera.
It takes great pictures, and has considerably better low light performance than my friend's t3i. I was thinking about getting the d3100, but the better sensor and flippy screen drove me to spend a little more money.
The only down sides I had were that the grip is a little small. I have long-ish fingers and they get sore from holding the thing for long periods.
There is a (somewhat well known) problem with auto-focus calibration that you might want to plan on dealing with in this camera and the d3100, but if you can get it recalibrated then the pictures are sharp.
