The Philips 615 Voice Tracer Digital Recorder can record at 8, 32, 48 and 64 kbps bit-rates in the MP3 format. It has a built-in 2GB memory, high-speed USB 2.0 interface for data transfer and four internal folders that can support 99 files each. Although MP3 may be the only recording format available on the Voice Tracer, you still have the option to choose from four different bit-rates depending on the quality required for each particular recording session. Designed for making voice recordings on-the-go, the lightweight and ergonomic Voice Tracer features an integrated mono microphone and powerful, dynamic front speaker that facilitates immediate, crystal-clear playback of a recent voice recording. To enhance the quieter voices that are more difficult to hear, Philips included ClearVoice sound enhancement. As an added convenience, there's a headphone output for privacy and a microphone input for recording via external mic.
With flexibility as important as portability, the Voice Tracer is equipped with several time-saving and convenient features. It's possible to initiate recordings by voice-activation. After engaging this hands-free method, the device will automatically begin recording as soon as it detects a voice. When the voice stops, the recording stops. If the voice begins again, the recording will begin again until the feature is switched off. When the entire device is shut down, a recording can still be quickly started with the one-touch option. Simply hold the REC button down for a moment and the unit will turn on and instantly start recording.
Philips also included an LCD display with a 1.4" diagonal screen to improve menu navigation speed and when you're away from the Voice Tracer, there's a keypad lock to protect your files. If it's in your pocket, the hold function will render the keys inactive. Even with the 110mW speaker output, high-quality recording options and array of useful features afforded by the 615 Voice Tracer, it still only requires a single AAA battery for up to 15 hrs of recording.

I work in law enforcement and I carry the recorder in my shirt pocket. The voices in the recordings are low but useful.

Comments about Philips 615 Voice Tracer Digital Recorder:
I bought this for my 11 year son to use for story composition. His hand writing is like my physician!
The mic works great. The small size is perfect for keeping in his pocket. The USB connection is essential for transcription to a text document on my desktop. The speaker is loud enough for my old ears.
One drawback:
The Voice Tracer came with a quickstart guide that gives directions only with pictures. No text. I guess that fits the global market. There was a recording in the first folder that says -'To learn how to use this product, go online and find the manual to download." I was not at the computer, and we could not figure it out the first time we tried to use it. My son was disappointed. Make sure you have an hour or so to practice with this before you use it the first time.
