Ended up buying a number of these drives for backup purposes. As such I was not concerned with the amount of noise they make, but more about how much they may heat up since they may not have active cooling for such part-time activities.
Well, I must say Hitachi has done great with their coolspin technology as it is an obvious difference compared to thier older drives. The drives run cool, and I was pleasently surprised they have virtually no head-seek noise compared to thier older drives as well.
I am a big Hitachi fan since about 2009 and am running over 20 of thier drives and have not had a single problem.

We shall see.
Have used Hitachi in the past without problem so it could be a one timer.

Drive is fast and runs cold. A little bit noisy when spinning up but quiet once rotation speed is stable.

Adds a great deal of high-speed storage. I've got this partitioned in to two 1.5-gig drives and they're running beautifully after a few weeks.

Many other drives within a few dollars of this one with the same capacity but this one had a 3 year warranty while the others were less. As a somewhat bleeding edge capacity I'll be happier with the longer warranty, especially since it will be part or a Drobo RAID.

These drives work well. But make sure you have the right enclosure or toaster drive-- the older enclosures/toaster drives don't recognize 3tb drives.

Simply unpack and install. I looked at the proces for warranty in case I need it. No forms to fill out, just supply the serial number. So I hope I never need it, but if I do, the process looks easy.

Comments about Hitachi 3TB 5K3000 Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Hard Disk Drive:
After much research for a decent sized internal drive, I settled on the 3TB 5K3000 Deskstar from Hitachi. The unit arrived precisely on time and was a cinch to install. As my my 3rd drive, I was a bit leary of any issues I might have. However, the set up was a quick and logical and so far the drive runs quietly and fast. All the Hitachi stuff I have worked with over the years has always impressed me with its understated quality and over-engineering. This hard drive comes highly recommended.

If space, rather than speed, is your goal, go with this one. It also consumes less power than its sister hard drive, the 3TB 7K3000.

Bought 20 of these for a RAID system upgrade and they have been performing quiet well. No DOAs too. Haven't noticed a huge difference in read/write speed between the 7200rpm drives they replaced.

Using this as a backup disk for my home NAS device. Disk installed with no problems and is working flawlessly for 3 weeks now. I prefer Hitachi's 5400rpm drives over the 7200rpm for non-speed-critical apps like this because they run noticeably cooler.

With high demanding professional studio recording software such as Pro-Tools, this HD is awesome!
A great addition to Spaceship's Studio Productions! Absolute value for every byte. Easy installation on a MAC Pro. Tested running Lion and Snow, though of course, the HD is platform independent. : )
A great deal for what is got to offer - a HUGE 3 TBs!
I would definitely recommend and even buy this item again.
Hitachi branded, so you know it's been tested well. Great buy !
Thank you.
