The Magnavox MDR513H/F7 320GB DVD Recorder is a multi-functional DVD recorder with a built-in ATSC/NTSC tuner that outputs standard definition video. With the 320GB HDD, you can not only play content from the hard drive, DVD or CD, but also record onto the hard drive or DVD and edit them later.
With the MDR513H/F7, you could potentially record a TV show to the hard drive, keep it there and delete commercials with the editing features, then save it to a DVD or simply keep it on the hard drive. For convenience purposes it has one-touch recording (OTR)and 1-button dubbing. There are six recording modes with record times from 64-387 minutes on HDD and 60-360 minutes on disc.
This recorder features HDMI 1080p upconversion, meaning you can enjoy crisp, clear picture quality when you connect it to an HDMI-enabled display. Since it is progressively scanned, this allows for a smoother picture quality than interlaced scan methods. And if you have MP3 files and JPEG photos saved to a CD or DVD disc, you can enjoy those too.
With the included fully functional remote control, adjustments can easily be made from the couch. For a DVD recorder with a generous amount of recording space and integrated tuner and compatibility for several disc types, the MDR513H/F7 makes a useful addition to any home entertainment system.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner:
We have just basic cable. Having a digital tuner we can get both our analog, and digital channels.Connecting to our TV, and set up were pretty easy. The operation guide is pretty thick, but if you take your time to look it over its easy to figure out. Only problem we're having is with the auto clock advancing. It was covered in the trouble shooting section. We had to set the clock manually, now its working fine.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner:
It automatically records (to its huge hard drive) the current TV channel the moment you turn on the machine and the TV. You can chase back the recording (eg when you go to the washroom) so you don't miss one second of viewing. The recording self-deletes when you turn off the machine, unless you choose to "push record" to record those segments you don't want the machine to delete. It can transfer your hard drive recordings to DVD discs. You can delete commercials from your recordings. The only complaint here is that the machine does not put a marking (chapter marks) where a commercial starts, meaning you do have to scan you recordings to locate the commercials, and this can be somewhat tedious. Other machines (eg. Sony) are able to mark where a commercial starts so that it can be found quickly, but not this machine. Editing titles of your recordings on this machine can also be a bit tedious due to the non-user-friendly design of the editing screen. But overall, a great product, very useful.

I've been trying to find something like this for the past 4 years. Leave it to Mannavox to jump in feet first. Ever since the US went to DTV I've struggled with how to tape on the air broadcasts. We live in a rural area and cable is not availible heck the best I can get is 1.4mps DSL internet for a premium so no on demand TV. I've had the box for 3 weeks now and its great. It lacks the on the air TV guide but other than that it works just fine for recording shows. I love the 30second comerical skip feature. The pictures about the same as an old fashioned high end VCR. I record at SP which gives me +120 hours of time on the hard drive. If you watch on the air stuff like American Idol or other shows that you would rather sleep than watch this is great. I kinda feel like a kid again when we got our first VCR (a Magnavox) too bad DTV set us back a few years. If you are a Video snob keep looking for a higher end version. If you a normal person and just want to record your normal TV shows, play regular DVD movies and live simple Go For It! Its not perfect but for what I paid it is a great bargin. I hope that this unit spurs on some competition and we see more of these units.

First of all, I must give special mention to the great service and ordering process of B&H Photo's online services. I am a fan of the main store, of course, but this was a great experience. I received my shipment the 2nd day after placing the order--and it was free shipping! this beats going to the store and lugging it on the subway,etc..
OK. about the product...I bought this mainly for:
1) the built-in digital tuner
2) HDD recorder
(duh), but, you won't believe how rare it is to find this combo, and at a great price.
Tuner and recorder work great. Have not looked at the tv guide function yet--if there even is one. now i can record ota programs. dvd player is nice too. it has an eject button on the remote, which i like. my previous dvd player didn't have one.
all in all, i think this product is excellent for the value, features and performance.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H 320GB DVR/DVD Recorder: I ordered the Magnavox MDR513H online from B&H Photo and it arrived promptly within 2-3 days, and been using it for about 2 weeks now. I like it so much that I will probabliy purchase a second unit. I wanted a recorder with digital tuner, large HDD, and HDMI. This unit has all these features. Purchased this unit to replace my old VCR and is so much easier to record and manage my TV shows now Plus it records in a Higher Resolution than my VCR and has a HDMI output for our new Samsung HD TV, no more bulky video tapes stacked around the tv as I can store all the videos on the MDR513H. In the highest record mode which is HQ the recording time is 64 hours and the longest SLP is 387 hours. In total you get about six recording modes, the video recording quality looks pretty good for me and this unit has more than enough storage for all the video's I need to record. I don't have the a good sound system to check the audio output but I'm sure it's good. I would recommend this product and order from B&H again.

Unit used to record programs for later viewing. Programs recorded to HDD play back in bright, vivid
picture just like watching from digital cable box.
Records in HD & analog but unable to get closed captioning when HDMI cable is used to connect unit to TV. Closed captions do not show up when using DVDs. DVDs must be sub-titled Tried Brite-View HDD previously and this unit works much faster to set up recordings and to watch them.

This Magnavox HDD recorder was hard to find but I'm glad I did. My previous DVD recorder burned up a lot of blank DVD-RWs because of errors. The MDR513 took a little longer to set up initially because there are no 'default settings' but once you configure it to your system, it works great! The recording is one-touch(nice feature) but a lot of the settings are hidden in menus.
Physical set-up was quick and easy. Remote is not cluttered with useless buttons. The one thing I would change is to incorporate a larger digital clock considering the distance from our viewing area. I would recommend the MDR513 to anyone looking for a TV recorder.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner:
This will be a brief, non-technical review. I only want to say 3 cheers to Magnavox for providing a hard drive-based option for recording TV. For about nine years, I used a Panasonic unit that recorded up to 6 hours at low resolution (SLP). Now I have a device that records in the neighborhood of 336 hours (SLP), and at the highest resolution (HQ), I can get about 67 hours. I am not acquainted with the technical details of Tivo, but why spend a monthly fee and $99 for a Tivo when you can spend a very reasonable amount for the MDR513H/F7 and never spend more (unless you buy DVDs). B&H provided seamless service, no fuss, no problems. Just a totally satisfied customer.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner:
I could no longer use my VCR to record TV programs because digital signals (from flat screen TV's) are not compatable with VHS. I use an antennna ($30), which is the equivalent to cable quality...meaning I get high definition from all the major networks (ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS) in addition to several other stations. The only recorder that works using an antenna to record programs, that I know of, is the Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner. B&H sent it with in 2 days and after a few weeks of using this product - AWESOME. Easy to use and good quality!

The only products of their kind still available in the U.S., this Magnavox and its sister MDR515H have been my favorite dvd recorders after 10 years of recording tv broadcasts using various types of recorders. The fast hard drive to dvd dubbing (25X) and editing capabilities are great features for making clean dvds. Compiling multiple shows of the same tv program on one dvd is easy. Large hard drive capacity allows recording all tv programs during a multiweek vacation. They may soon be discontinued however.

Magnavox has always been a good brand for us and this DVE recorder player is not exception. It only has one drawback and that is the instruction manual is a little hard to follow. But with the experience we have had it was simple to setup and use. Has been extremely reliable so far. Also the printing on the remote could be a little larger for us old folks, LOL.

I got this product for a Christmas present and didn't take it out of the box. I wanted to read the manual first. I was reading how to hook it up thru your cable box and in bold print it says you can't record a show and watch another channel!!! It's a glorified VCR!!! Will be sending back!!

Market demand for recorders with HD, NTSC format. This is one of the few for sale and answered all my needs. Easy to use and a 320 gb HD, enough to store lots of digital media.

Comments about Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD & DVD Recorder With Digital Tuner:
Bought this several weeks ago, I have an ONKYO (had) two zone receiver with multiple HDMI and component input and output, and a Sony Bravia TV with Saltelite. Up until I added this awful product to my configuration all worked well, had a terrific picture. Since I've added the magnovox nightmare, all of my HDMI port have stopped working, can no longer route siganls through my ONKYO receiver and my sony bravia (three years old) hdmi input ports are no longer working. Unless your equipment meets specific standard specifications for this type of product, it will work for a little while and then kaboooom! You'll lose all of your components
