The Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio Production Switcher is a versatile 1 RU switcher that's a lot more powerful than you might expect at this price. For instance, live-switch a multi-camera shoot of a concert with a mix of high-definition HD-SDI- and HDMI-output camcorders – the six-input ATEM Television Studio can handle it, even applying a frame sync to each input. That means expensive genlocked cameras are simply not necessary.
The three keyers included in the ATEM Control Panel software allow you to add professional graphics such as logos and keys (the switcher features two media player frame stores). Using a green screen, you can even chroma-key a performer against a graphical background – live. Meanwhile, you can be encoding the live concert to H.264 in real time, producing a high-quality, professionally compressed HD file that will be ready for easy upload to the web the minute the show is over.
Another cost-saving feature is the multi-view output, which allows you to display up to 10 video sources on any HDMI- or HD-SDI-enabled screen. This saves not only money but also space: there's simply no need to transport and maintain a full battery of video monitors.
For all its ease of use, ATEM Television Studio also accommodates live-production operations with growth in mind. Perhaps you'll move up from HDMI to HD-SDI camcorders in the near future – the switcher is ready. Or maybe you'll want a professional hardware control panel – Blackmagic's ATEM 1 M/E and 2 M/E panels (not included) both connect to the switcher via Ethernet. In any case, the switcher's operation will be familiar to anyone with an understanding of broadcast switching. This is a professional 10-bit HD switcher that just happens to accommodate lower-budget productions with unexpected finesse.
Note! No SD input at this time; a firmware update is planned. Sources must be converted before input. You cannot mix HD and SD sources within the switcher.

The amount of functionality for a unit this small and this inexpensive is stunning, and Blackmagic has made many improvements over the last month. Just-released software 2.7.1 adds the long-awaited support for standard definition and allows sources to be assigned to different panel buttons. But the unit does not pass even embedded audio through from inputs to output, nor will closed captioning make it through the ATEM. And the chromakeyer, while it works fairly well, can create a color shift in the background video.
For somebody doing small scale live production -- a broadcast remote with a couple cameras, or a house of worship -- these limitation probably won't matter, and this can be a very cost effective way to get professional quality.

Great Potential
The small size of this product is amazing. I remember my old 8 input switcher was twice the size of a bread box and weighed 75lbs. The image quality is very good.

The small size of this product is amazing. I remember my old 8 input switcher was twice the size of a bread box and weighed 75lbs. The image quality is very good.
My reasons for not giving it 5 stars are the following:
On a mac you have to use USB 2 which limits your recording to h264 if you use the BlackMagic software.
The audio inputs are AES/EBU only so have to purchase an analog to digital converter. ($200), plus you will need a audio delay box to slow down the audio so it is in insync with the video. ($200-$400) So there is a big hidden cost when working with audio.
With all of there great technology BlackMagic should have incorporated an analog audio solution with a built in audio. How easy that would that have been for this company? Come on Black Magic, do it right.
The other solution solution would be to purchase one of the Thunderbolt products coming out. Then I would need a new lap top to run it at a hefty price.
So I would say this product is not ready for prime time, but could great if the design change included analog audio inputs.

Comments about Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio Production Switcher:
I used it for a 4 camera shoot at a fashion show which I streamed live to the Internet. I had great difficulty finding ways to get the signal into the switcher. I finally bought converters to SDI. HDMI cables will only work over distances of about 15ft. I found amplifiers and cables that would work for longer distances and used them on two cameras but the long runs required the converters. I also had to buy an audio converter that converted analog to digital and enabled me to delay the audio so I could sync the sound and video. Once it was wired and set up it worked well, but plan on spending another $1000 to $1500.

The ATEM Television Studio Production switcher looks and works great, we love the workmanship and the look of it, its also very small and light, easy to mount or hide anywhere. I would say this is the first and only HDMI working switcher available in the market that works amazing! As a broadcast director, the switcher has some minor limitations... the fist is not having easy access to analogue XLR plug ins or outs. That would have made things a lot easier. The software is also great, but wish the switcher and monitors would be included in the same monitor. Again, it would make things a lot easier. Other than that, we recommend this product highly for small venues, schools and churches.

This product is just amazing. Quality is remarkable, and I have had zero problems. - I have purchased 2 of these from BH, and built some nice kits. Ready to rock and roll on the video. I connect to a Ninja, and the ATEM feeds it the HDMI signal, and it just looks great.

This product is not working at all. You can't install the blackmagic video card in a desktop with intel i7 processor. You don't have sound if you don't buy a $200 conventer. It's wasting [$] for a lot of issues. Confusing manual and no Support at all. I would like to return it and my money back

Used for 2-3 camera shoots with the Panasonic HMC 150 with HDMI connections, recording to an external recorder for the line cut. Everything works great and is easy to set up as long as you know basics of network connections and how to get that going. The only complaint is it gets really hot after 3 hours of use and every now and then 1 connection will go out, assuming because of heat but I just swap to another HDMI input and after a while it works again.

I use this in my travel web streaming kit. Its very small and compact. Instant on and always works. Its missing some key features that I would really like to see added like the ability to down convert to SD.
I would not recommend this product if your planning to do any kind of broadcast. This product is for person production only. The other ATEM switchers would be much more suited for broadcast.

Comments about Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio Production Switcher:
Unfinished product. There is a note that is compatible with SD / HD in the cabinet, but the software does not work on sd. I now have to buy a machine to do the dowconvert. Blackmagics is deceiving customers, it is dishonest. The manual is designed for three different products, it's confusing. The switcher heats, use in air-conditioned environment. Nevertheless, it is a product with good price / performance ratio. For lack of respect for the consumer, Blackmagic takes two stars.
