The Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router from Asus is a versatile, high-performance router designed to effectively work with a wide variety of wireless and wired devices on your network. This router can connect to your wireless N, B, and G devices and operates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Operating on dual bands at the same time allows you to experience optimal data transfer speeds, so that you experience little to no lag or interference. As such, each band can transfer data concurrently at up to 300Mbps. You can surf the Internet, send emails, or download files on the 2.4GHz band and stream multimedia content, such as HD video, music, or online games on the 5GHz band.
This router also utilizes a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting to your modem and features four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for establishing high-speed wired connections to any of your Ethernet-enabled devices. Beyond these ports, the router also has two USB 2.0 ports, which allow you to connect NAS storage devices or printers. With an easy-to-use interface, Asus's Ai Radar technology, and support for up to 300,000 data sessions, this router is a sure-shot way to brilliantly bring the Internet to your wired and wireless devices on your home or office network.

I was between this router and the Linksys E4200. I decided to go with this router because of price and throughput reviews seemed a little better. So far this router has been a much needed upgrade. I had 2 routers previously. A Linksys WRT54GSand a WRT54GS2, both had DD-WRT custom firmware and had one setup as a repeater bridge to spread the signal throughout my 3 level home. My setup was the WRT54GS2 on the middle floor as the main router with my television/Xbox entertainment center. The second router was on the first floor used as a repeater bridge for my desktop computer and second xbox. When hardwired through the router I was getting about 20-25mbps down and 3-4mbps up. Wireless about 6 feet away I was getting about 11-12mbps down and 3mbps up. The desktop was getting about 5-8mbps down and 2-3 mbps up. With the Asus RT-N56U router, my desktop at the furthest connection I now get about 15-20mbps down but only 1.6-2mbps up. My throughput and range has definitely increased, I can now download and still browse the internet. Flash videos online now load much faster. Actual router setup was not as simple as my previously owned Linksys routers which were truly plug and play. I spent about an hour trying to figure out you have to click the "globe" (internet status) on the network map to show the quick internet setup button which the instructions say to click. I have only had to soft reset the router maybe 1 or 2 times since having it for a month. Overall I am happy with this router; it gave me needed throughput I was lacking. Although you can't put DD-WRT on this router, I only needed it for a repeater bridge, but this router alone works fine. I have yet to try the network printer/storage so I can't comment on that. I would like to try the E4200 to see how they compare, but for the lower price this router is a good choice.

This router was easy to set up and the dual band capabilty is terrific for segregating your network traffic. But I primarily bought the RT-N56U for the USB capabilities so I could have my Seagate 1TB (NTFS) external disk on the network and available to all home users at all times. There are two ways to setup the USB "share without account" and "share with account" allowing the admin to set R/W or R or NO access level/permissions. I tested both methods using R/W. The Seagate was recognized under both modes and I was able to create/delete/move/rename folders/files BUT I CANNOT with either mode edit/save documents or SAVE any downloaded material (such as images) directly from a website or another location on the network to the drive! I get an "error saving". If working in Word or Excel I get a "disk full error" (I do not have disk quota set on that drive). Even with a UAC challenge as Admin I cannot. User accounts are setup on the computers appropriately (one XP wired and 2 WIN 7 Home premium). I am running latest ASUS 1.0.1.7c firmware. I have seen similar posts on reviews/forums but no solutions. Also perturbing is ASUS lack of service support. So while this router has LOTS of capabilities the one I need is the one I cannot use. I have returned to sharing the drive off my laptop. I have not tried the USB with a FAT32 drive to see if it works with that but the FAT32 size limit is problematic for me even if it does. This router does not support all wireless printers using the USB so I was unable to test that capability as mine is not supported.

Comments about ASUS Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router:
This is the first router I have owned. I have modem's with the router built in, but I am finding that having the router as a separate element gives me more flexibility.
I researched routers for a couple of months and always came back to this one. So I ordered it, got it in a couple of days, plugged it in, hooked up the modem and my Mac to it, made a couple of security adjustments in the easy to use admin panel . . . haven't touch it since. Its been running smoothly and fast for more than a month. If I have problems with it in the future, I will come back here and let you all know.
I highly recommend this router.

This router is used within a two story house with a NAS. It has a good range through out the house, much stronger than our last n speed router. The only con for this device is its susceptibility to interference from our baby monitor. That being noted our other router had the same problem, but worse.

This is a fast, easy to set up, high speed router. The only problem is that it will not work with my school's VPN client. Since the firmware version has no pass through and updates refused to load, I had to exchange it for an Netgear router. Pity because it is an otherwise beautiful product.

Comments about ASUS Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router:
A good router, fast and works as stated. ASUS provides a free domain name service to allow access of HDDs attached to the router through USB, from any location. The only problems I've encountered so far were with the ASUS DDNS service, which is intermittently unavailable. Once the account is setup it works perfectly, but often administration is difficult because the web portal is frequently down and must be constantly retried to gain access. Other than this small issue the router works perfectly.

Very easy to set up and use immediately. I've never installed a router before and found the idea intimidating. But this was a easy, just follow the quick start guide and the actual configuring was done automatically. In took about 5 minutes after plugging in the Ethernet cables and I was back online. Has good range and stable signal.

I replaced my old 802.11b router with the Asus Black Diamond RTN-56U. The improved difference in performance, security, and features are very noticable. I bought it based on outstanding reviews on various sites, and I am very pleased with my purchase. My friends are considering buying one too.

My office is downstairs and the router is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house but I get a "Very Good" signal strength and a constant 270 Mbps.
Plan to use t dual band to stream movies to downstairs HTPC.

This is my first dual band router and it works great as I have a wide variety of devices in both bands. We use this router in an apartment with mostly Apple devices connected. While some reviews complain that external Hard Disks used as network drives are not supported with Apple computers there is an easy work around. I use Paragon NTFS for Mac which allows me to format and connect a NTFS drive to the router and read/write to it from my Mac computer.
This router is simple to set up and was mostly plug and play with my cable internet connection.

We use the RT-N56U as an AP and it works reliably with very good range. Our company has a variety of devices connecting to it. I cannot speak to its abilities as a router, but it has an intuitive cfg interface and connects in the n-range on both 2.4 & 5ghz bands. I wish that I could give it a static address when operating it as an AP. As with any router/AP, download the latest firmware.

Comments about ASUS Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router:
I'm thrilled with this router. I previously had an Asus RT-N16, which was really solid, but the firmware was lacking. Adjustments were hidden, and while it functioned well, the design made any sort of configuration a hassle. The speed and range has improved quite a bit from an already good place, and the firmware is great now.
If thats not of interest to you, the ease of basic setup, and the reliability of the connection and speed is fantastic. I'd recommend this to skilled users and the more connect and forget it type of users alike.
My only complaint is that it doesn't support ipv6, but thats a future proofing issue. By the time that becomes necessary, you should definitely be ready to replace your router anyways.
Outperforms both the Linksys e4200, and the netgear n900, from every test i've seen, even though i haven't gotten to test it. From a usability perspective, I definitely prefer the firmware on this to the ones on both of those.

Comments about ASUS Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router:
This is the most stylish, and smallest, router I've ever seen, let alone owned - kudos to Asus. I actually use this router as an Access Point; already have a router. This unit functions quite well in a 2-level home on both bands. The 5Ghz band works great for streaming to a flat panel TV ~21 feet away - the stutter is minimal.
On the site Small Net Builder, this router has been consistently one of the most popular on a weekly basis.
There are two nitpicks that I have. One is that logging into the router via a web browser is an http session, which is not as secure; it's http, not https. Second is that there should be an option to disable logging into the router from a wireless device. Having both of these options available, in my opinion, would make for a more secure device.
With that said, I would recommend this router to anyone. Please note that your experience may differ from mine.
This is the first product review I've ever written although I've been purchasing tech gear for well over ten years.

About the store, I got the product on time, decently packed. It took only 5 mins to setup the stuff. So far I am happy with the performance, although I didn't use the 5Mhz band yet. Even the USB performance is above expectation ( I was able to stream 720p video from an attached usb hard drive without a glitch)
