The 27" iMac Desktop Computer from Apple is a sleek all-in-one computer with a stunning 16:9 HD display. Capable of displaying 1080p HD video at full resolution, the display features a LED backlight and IPS panel technology for superior image quality. The iMac sports a sleek aluminum and glass industrial design, with a matching wireless slimline aluminum keyboard. Apple's innovative wireless Magic Mouse is included for cursor control, giving desktop users the same powerful multi-touch input capabilities that are found in Apple notebook trackpads -- in a desktop mouse form factor.
The built-in FaceTime HD camera hides discreetly above the LCD screen, giving you ready access to a webcam for Internet chat and conferencing. It will let you make video calls to other Mac users with the included FaceTime app, as well as to anyone with an iPhone 4 or an iPod touch model with a built-in camera.
The iMac features two Thunderbolt ports. Thunderbolt is a high-speed interface that can move data at an amazing 10Gbps -- double that of USB 3.0. Each Thunderbolt port doubles as a display output -- they share the same physical form factor as Mini DisplayPort. You can use each port to daisy-chain up to six devices -- making it possible to connect up to 12 Thunderbolt devices two this iMac -- including two external displays!
The system also features USB 2.0 and FireWire-800 ports for device connectivity. An SDXC slot is built-in as well, allowing you to download pictures from your digital camera directly into iPhoto.
iLife '11 has a complete suite of digital creativity applications. Easy enough for anyone to use, iLife will help you edit your home movies, organize digital photos, and compose original music. The system is also powerful enough to run Apple's professional-level applications, perfect for those who are ready to move up to the next level of creative software.
The computer is powered by a quad-core 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor for superior performance. It boasts 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, integrated speakers, and the SuperDrive DVD burner. The glossy 27" widescreen display is powered by an AMD Radeon HD 6770M GPU with 512MB of memory.
The 64-bit OS features Time Machine backup, which automatically backs up system data to an external hard drive. It also features intuitive Cover Flow navigation, the powerful Spotlight search tool, and Quick Look document preview. You'll be able to use Boot Camp to run Windows on your Mac.
The iMac is a strikingly elegant computer that will feel at home on virtually any desk.

Since 1985, I have been an advocate of DOS and Windows machines and have told myself as well as ALL others, that I would NEVER step over to the "Dark Side"...
Well, that was until an hour after I received my FIRST EVER, new Apple Mid-2011 27" iMac...
WOW!!!...what can I say...other than, "I should have switched over to the "Apple-II" back in 1985...lol...
From the time that I pulled the unit out of the "Triple-Boxed" B & H Foto & Electronics Corp. packing, until approximately an hour later, when I was totally bored because there was nothing more that I needed to do, to have this machine up running, fully functional with nearly nothing that I did not understand on its functions or pre-installed Lion OSX software...since I was always use to having to download/upload.cut-and-paste/install/re-boot/re-install/re-re-boot/call MS/delete/re-install/re-re-re-boot...
It is just amazingly fast running up from a cold start...on restarts...running software...concurrent OSs (OSX and WIN)...easy on the eyes with great resolution...
Great product Apple and B&H...kudos!!!...

Apple products are almost always amazing, however this is mostly a review about the LCD screen. Suggestion for everyone, change your desktop background to a Solid Color, preferably Grey, now open a solid color photo or graphic or even open the application Stickies. Now drag that solid color/graphic/sticky note across your display and tell me if you too have issues with equal perfect color rendition and constant shading across the display!?!? I took my 2 year old iMac display in when I first noticed a well defined line in the middle of my display in which the left side was much darker and dimmer than the right side...
The next 2 LCD screens I received were better, but far from the perfection I expect with Apple products! All genius bar employees that worked with me as well as roommates of mine could see the unequal color/grading of the screen. I received a new iMac and this one too has the same issue albeit not as bad as the defining left/right dark/bright problem. This computer screen's left side is more grey and it's right side more yellow (again were talking about very fine detailed color shifts). Although these are subtle things, I don't see how professional photographers/videographers/editors and others involved in an industry which deals with such fine detail and relies on accurate color rendition can handle this problem?
I still love Apple, and I am very pleased with their support, but what is going on here?

Just replaced my old iMac G4 with this. Wow. I'm sure there is room for improvment on some level, but really? It's pure perfection.

They really hit a home run with the iMac. Speed, ease of use, great software, proven OS, great mouse are just a few of the fine features. Mine sits beside a Windows running XP Pro - I can't imagine why I should ever boot it up again.

Comments about Apple 27" iMac Desktop Computer:
This machine replaces an aging white iMac with a completely full 250GB harddrive running OS 10.4. I ordered 4 x 4GB SO-DIMM Notebook Memory and removed the factory supplied 2 x 2GB memory immediately. Simple, quick, easy process to swap out. The primary use of the machine is extreme photography and HD video editing. I find the supplied software (iPhoto & iMovie) to be perfectly adequate for my use. Both programs perform significantly better on this machine, especially with the expanded memory option. I use an external hard drive to manage about 700GB of video files and the internal harddrive to manage about 45,000 JPEG files (of course backing those up elsewhere). This machine easily handles data of this magnitude. The only surprise so far surrounds the Firewire port. Some of my older video equipment uses the Firewire 400 port. This iMac only comes with a Firewire 800 port. A visit to the local Genius bar has determined that this camera is simply not compatible with Firewire 800, leaving no alternative. Other than that slight issue, all is fantastic with this machine.

Great piece of hardware. When my mom saw my 27 inch iMac, she asked if I had bought a TV. The wireless keyboard and mouse are great. Really pleased with the purchase.

Faster than specs would suggest. Monitor is gorgeous. Easy to use, but worth investing in a good guide (e.g., Missing Manual) to get the most out of the operating system. Easy to add extra memory. I like automatically synching with other Apple products.

Comments about Apple 27" iMac Desktop Computer:
This is an incredible computer. Along with the 2 Thunderbolt ports, I was able to replace my aging Macbook Pro with something way more serious.
I edit HD video on this machine with Final Cut Pro X with nary a hiccup. This unit is so much faster than my laptop that I'm blown away. Plus the display is insane. It looks so good, way better than my Dell, Viewsonic and Acer displays.
I'm glad I chose 27" and i5 over the 21" i7. The very little time I would have saved rendering video is always recovered in having so much more desktop space.
The wireless keyboard and mouse are nothing less than cool. I have to buy some more of these Mac mice and get them to work on my (now junky looking) PCs.
It took a while to update the unit to the latest Lion. That means when I pulled the unit from the box, I plugged it in, ran updates for 2-3 hours and I was ready to go with the latest greatest.
Lion is nicer, too.
I purchased a Firewire 800 to 400 converter cable so I'm able to connect to my external tape deck. A Thunderbolt to DVI adapter allows a 2nd 1080p monitor to be connected to this machine for incredible desktop space. The Thunderbolt to Express-34 adapter from B&H means I can connect to an external 5-drive eSATA tower, too. It was worth the extra cash to get the 27" because now I've got an external monitor and drive bay hooked up without having to purchase a very expensive Thunderbolt drive tower. HD video editing eats hard disks for breakfast and this is a great solution.
Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 works incredibly fast on this machine, rendering Nikon D300s video on the fly, unlike my previous machine and FCP 6. That was a painful experience. Now this machine allows me to scrub clips instantly with no rendering. The speed makes me realize how much time I was wasting on my older machine.
I also purchased and maxed out the memory to 16GB. FCP X and other apps eat memory. The 16GB is very cheap and highly recommended. Even the little plate on the bottom had captive screws so I didn't lose them - Apple really did think of everything on this unit. My first worry was losing those specialized screws but Apple triumphed again.
The keyboard is way cool. I just wish Apple would put dimples on the F and J keys - I'm old school that way.
The top of the computer does get quite toasty. Don't put a towel or anything on it. I purchased the Apple Care plan because this is a work machine. If it goes down, I need to be back up and running immediately. I've used that plan more than once and it saved my bacon. For all other products, I don't buy the plan because it's a waste of $$$ vs how much it costs to just buy another one. When you're working under a deadline and you have a problem, your customer doesn't care - they just want their product.
I now look at my PCs with disdain, even more so than when I use my Macbook Pro. Who wants a stupid tower eating up precious space on their desk. A couple friends have bought these iMacs for their parents and we all have far fewer tech support calls. That alone was worth the extra few $$$. No more frustrating calls with family.
I'm not an Apple sales person - this machine is just so nice, I can't say enough. Even if it blew up and I had to use my Apple Care plan, I'd replace it with the same immediately.

This is the first time I've had a Mac that wasn't a hand-me-down. My last Mac was so antique it didn't run intel, which was problematic since I often use ti to process photographs and do graphic design. This new machine is lightening fast even using wifi, and the wireless petite keyboard and magic mouse have revolutionized my typing and browsing. The resolution on the screen is stupendous for an artist who likes to do fine adjustments on both photos and graphic work. And when the sweetheart wants to watch something I don't like on TV I can just got to my office and put in a film DVD. My computer screenn is larger than our TV. I'm also in love with B&H. The speed and professionality of the mercantile process is unsurpassed in my experience with retailers. Thanks Apple & B&H!

As a First time Mac owner, I am impressed with how easy it was to set-up and use. The Design is top notch. I bought this to edit Photos. The Screen size makes working on images & files extremely convenient. I tried to do something the other day on my laptop and I was amazed at how difficult it was to keep an efficient workflow. The ability to see multiple windows at the same time is invaluable. The color and resolution of the screen is amazing. Everything looks better on this screen!
I plan to upgrade the RAM. When I loaded 1500 images using Canon's Digital Pro, It seemed to bog down after working on about 200 images from the set. But I knew I would do this when I ordered.

What a great decision! Another PC Windows convert. So far I am ecstatic with this 27" iMac. Takes a little getting used to but it's worth it. I can tell this was a great step in the right direction. The monitor on this computer is awesome, to put it mildly and everything works so well and so simply!
GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT, you'll be glad you did!
