The AVR-1712 7.1-Channel AV Surround Receiver from Denon provides advanced audio and video processing with an array of connections for both next generation and legacy equipment, as well as conveniences that make it easy to operate. Featuring six HDMI 1.4a inputs and one output, this receiver is a superb match for the Blu-ray A/V format, as well as other HD sources. It is compatible with 1080p resolution and offers support for 3D video, Audio Return Channel, Deep Color, x.v. Color, Auto Lipsync and HDMI control. It also supports processing for lossless audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as Dolby Pro Logic IIz.
The AVR-1712 provides fully discrete, identical quality and power for all 7 channels with a stable power supply for high quality sound and picture playback. If you have an iPod, iPhone, iPad or USB drive, you can connect it to the USB port to enjoy even more content. This receiver can also be used with the optional Denon Networked Control Dock for network streaming or docking your iPod or iPhone. The unit's Compressed Audio Restorer ensures your standard MP3 playback is crisp and clear.
Additional features include a Setup Wizard that offers easy to follow setup instructions, a GUI that overlays your HD sources, Audyssey Dynamic Volume to equalize volume fluctuations, and the sophisticated Audyssey MultEQ XT and auto setup calibration. The AVR-1712 comes equipped with HDMI 1.4a, allowing you to make the most of several premium video features:
3D Pass Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-1712 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts.
Audio Return Channel: HDMI 1.4a also features an Audio Return Channel, which allows both audio and video content to be sent through a single HDMI cable. This eliminates the need for separate audio and video cables running from your TV to the receiver.
Deep Color and x.v.Color Support: The AVR-1712 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.

Fully discrete, identical quality and power for all 7 channels (90 W x 7ch)
To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the AVR-1712's 7 channels is equipped with the same power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.
High-definition audio support:
The AVR-1712 has a decoder that supports Dolby TrueHD, the audio format of Blu-ray disc players, and DTS-HD Master Audio, another high-grade digital audio format.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz:
To let you enjoy an even richer spatial expression, the AVR-1712 is equipped with a Dolby Pro Logic IIz processor. By connecting Front Height speakers and using Dolby Pro Logic IIz playback, you will be able to enjoy surround sound in the vertical as well as horizontal direction.
Minimum Signal Path for clear audio and video signal:
The "simple and straight" design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to immaculately clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to an absolute minimum.
Direct Mechanical Ground Construction:
Vibration-resistant construction has been reviewed to thoroughly suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the highly rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.
Compressed Audio Restorer to enhance digital music files:
Compressed Audio Restorer is Denon technology that restores compressed music sources to their original precompressed quality to give you a lively sonic ambience with greater detail and depth.

The AVR-1712 supports up to 7.1 channels (FL/ FR/ C/ SL/ SR/ SBL/ SBR/ SW) for surround playback defined by the Blu-ray disc format. To enjoy surround playback with the AVR-1712's Dolby Pro Logic IIz, you can reassign the power amp from the two surround back channels (SBL/SBR) to the two front height channels (FHL/FHR). Or by assigning the SBL/SBR power amp to Zone 2, you can enjoy multi-room audio playback, or to achieve higher-quality sound for 2-channel stereo playback, you can configure the AVR-1712 for front bi-amp operation. These are just some of the ways you can arrange the AVR-1712's amps to suit various listening styles.

After carefully removing my old receiver and following directions for installing the Denon unit, there was no sound (except AM radio). Called Denon tech service, and after trying everything suggested with no success, I was advised to return the product. I would have accepted a replacement but B&H is out of stock.

Purchased to replace a malfunctioning Onkyo receiver, this Denon unit is far more user-friendly in actual operation than the Onkyo.
Set-up requires some expense of time & patience - particularly the speaker calibration procedure (Tip - don't shortcut this. Take as many readings as possible to calibrate the speakers. It WILL be worth it!)
The included universal remote is awkward, to say the least, but it'll do if you don't have a better programmable/learning remote of your own.
This unit is smaller than I thought it would be given all the features.
Ah yes! The features. This is why I bought this unit - 6 HDMI inputs with pass-through capability! I am very happy with the purchase of this Denon unit.
