The Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini RAID Enclosure is an exceptional way to create your own high-capacity, high-performance external storage out of any SATA 2.5" internal hard disk or solid-state drives. This enclosure can hold two of these drives of up to 2.2TB capacity. It supports RAID 0, 1, and NRAID (or spanning) and can also be used as an external boot drive.
In terms of connecting to your computer, this enclosure features four different interfaces. At your disposal, you will have two FireWire 800 ports, one FireWire 400 port, one eSATA port, and one USB 2.0 port. With the eSATA port, you can transfer data at a speedy rate of up to 300MB/s. Also, with the FireWire 800 port, you can power the enclosure.
Beyond these ports, this enclosure is shock-resistant, near-silent and fanless in operation. While it comes formatted for Macs and is Time Machine and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard ready, it can also be reformatted to work with your Windows or Linux computer system.

Below are the requirements for using the enclosure (and separately-purchased drives within it) as an external startup drive. eSATA General Requirement For either Mac or Windows Computers: bootable eSATA host controller Mac: Built-in: Any SATA based Mac using a built-in SATA connection adapted to an eSATA connection will support booting. Port multiplier enclosures are not supported. Card/HBA: Most eSATA expansion cards or host board adapters will not be bootable. Check with your specific card manufacturer regarding Mac boot support. PC: Will boot as long as your BIOS supports booting from the eSATA interface. BIOS support will vary by motherboard and host board adapters. FireWire 800 Boot/Startup Mac: Intel Macs and some PowerPC Macs running OS 8.6 or later. Please note, non-Intel Macs will not be able to boot external enclosures that have over 2.2TB support enabled. This is a hardware limitation of the computer. PC: Will boot as long as your BIOS supports booting from the FireWire 800 interface. BIOS support will vary by motherboard and host board adapters. Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini RAID Enclosure:
bought from b&H experience was fine, but planned to use it in "singledisk" mode, where each drive can stand on its own... wasnt working, contacted owc... they confirm only new units have the oxford 946 chipset, vs the 936 in the one i got at b&h 1/12/12. seek out newer part number if this is an important feature to you.

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini RAID Enclosure:
Was really easy to setup (no drivers/no software) just works!!! Main reason for buying this was the FW800 + Portable RAID. I love it that you don't need to plug power adapter when the FW800 is connected.

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini RAID Enclosure:
Purchased this enclosure to store old 2.5" SATA drives I did not have in use. The firewire connections are great to attach to my Mac Mini HTC. The only draw back to this enclosure is that a separate power adapter is not included so if you need to use as USB, you will have to buy the suggested power adapter. This is not really disclosed on the product.

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini RAID Enclosure:
RAID controller seems to be pretty fast with eSATA scorpio black 320gb, so I can imagine it would be even faster with SSD drives. USB2 and Firewire performance limited by the protocol's bandwidth limit. Feels very solid, almost same metal as mac pro and such. Was pretty silent with 2 7200rpm drives.
