I recently have gone from desktop to working only with my new laptop. With this external drive, I swapped information that I kept on 3 other hard drives. I am not missing the hard drive capacity my desktop had because I have it all at my fingertips and still have room for more.
This was absolutely plug and play. Windows 7 recognized it. No formatting was necessary.I didn't give it five stars because I've only had it for a week or two. But, I am quite happy so far. Oh,...did I mention the thing is FAST? USB 3 --Believe the hype. :)
I did plug it into a Mac to grab some things off a friend's computer, but it would only read and not write to the Hitachi without reformatting the drive.
If you are looking to reduce the space you need for multiple hard drives, speedy transfers and portability, don't hesitate to get this drive.

I was in need for a good, reliable and huge back-up hard disk drive last December.
Sadly at that time the prices for hard drives in general skyrocket.
At the time Hitachi was the only one offering this storage capacity at a reasonable price. This was my first time buying a hard drive from Hitachi, I used to be a loyal Western Digital customer, but not this time.
The drive has been working great on two full backups I have made up today.
It transfers data at full USB 3.0 speed, silently and does not get very warm.
I for sure will recommend this drive for the performance, price and great storage capacity.
If the price keeps good, go for it.

I work with digital film media - whether backing up video footage, transcoding to different formats, and non-linear editing, so I'm always in need of lots and lots of space. So far, so good with this 3TB drive. No glitches, no hiccups, etc. Can't wait to upgrade to USB 3.0 which this drive is already spec'ed for. The price is not bad for this size. Of course, a few months from now, it'll get cheaper.
