The 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0 is a cross-platform, high-capacity, high-performance external drive, well-suited to handle the backup and storage demands of creative professionals. Designed to work with either your Windows or Mac computer, this drive features a large capacity of 1TB, a 7200rpm disk speed, 32MB of onboard cache, and an impressive mix of three different interfaces. It has a blazing fast USB 3.0 port, an eSATA 3Gbps port, and two FireWire 800 ports.
Although Mac OS X typically doesn't support USB 3.0 connections, LaCie has created a driver that allows you to use this interface with your Mac (also requires a LaCie USB 3.0 card for your computer). Also with regard to Mac computers, the two FireWire 800 ports allow you to daisy-chain the drive. With the drive, you can transfer data at up to 130MB/s via USB 3.0, 115MB/s via eSATA, and 85MB/s via FireWire 800.
The drive also features a heat-sink design for heat dissipation as well as a programmable eco-management mode. It comes with Genie Backup Assistant and Intego Backup Assistant sfotware for backing up your data and restoring any data that you might have accidentally deleted. Whether you stack it with other d2 Quadra drives, mount it in a rack, or stand it upright, this drive is a versatile, exceptional backup and storage solution for the consumer or creative professional.

I've bought 3 of these so far. One was DOA, but LaCie was very professional and quick about replacing it (they even covered return shipping). I'm no drive expert, but these drives work, and they're fast. I only use them for backup purposes, but I'm constantly writing to them. So far they've been very reliable. Word of caution--the Intego Backup Assistant (apparently not developed by LaCie, but packaged with the drive) has caused my computer to experience problems booting and shutting down, so I can't say I love that software, and actually plan on uninstalling it. But the drives themselves seem to be very high quality, and I plan to buy more of them as my business grows.

We've bought a lot of these LaCie drives for a busy post production department, and one thing we really liked was that they would not "sleep" when not being accessed. No time-wasting power-up, power-down issues when playing through a FCP or Avid timeline. However, this new USB 3.0, v3 Quadra defaults to sleeping after 30 minutes of inactivity on a Mac. The Energy Saver utility in System Preferences will not fix this problem. I have contacted LaCie and they are working on a firmware upgrade to these v3 drives, but in the meantime we are not purchasing these for editing. This applies to both the 1TB and 2TB versions.

Comments about 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I use my 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra 3.0 with my MacBook Pro. I was a little worried after reading reviews about it not functioning with Macs after waking from sleep mode, but I'm happy to say that I have not had any issues. I was concerned that I had received a used or refurbished version when there was no shrink wrap on the product box and was only held shut by a round piece of tape that looked resealed, but I was assured that it was new. Here's hoping...

Comments about 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
Have many hard drives over last decade, and over 10 from LaCie. Most perform admirably - still have a 20GB portable Lacie from around 2000 that works to this day (over $200 when purchased!). But this model has been freezing whenever I daisy chain another hard drive (it has two firewire 800 ports - so obviously its designed with this use in mind). If I plug the other HD in before connecting this one to the computer there is no problem. But if i have this HD plugged in and decide to plug in a second hard drive using the LaCie's 2nd FW800 port it freezes up. I've been hot-swapping daisy chained LaCie HD's for years and suddenly this is a problem?

Comments about 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I use one for desktop backup and one for laptop backup. The third one I just bought for audio sample library storage. Lacie drives have served me and two other people I know doing audio production well. I have a very old Lacie drive that still works and two portable Rugged Lacie drives. I had one older Lacie drive fail but it had a lot of use and was pretty old as well it did so gracefully allowing me to back it up before it eventually died. My only other issue was when I ordered my second Rugged drive it was sold as 7200 rpm but when I got it the included material clearly had 5200rpm blacked out. When I called Lacie they assured me that the model # was 7200rpm. I noticed the drive got much hotter than my first one when in use. After speaking to a tech he suggested I exchange it, which I did unfortunately it still gets very hot. Though I haven't used it very much I haven't had any problems with it. In the time I've had have had most of these drive I've had two out of three Western Digital drives fail without warning.

I use this for general storage, high res photos and some video. The FireWire 800does a great job with all of it. It's a reliable product and works great with Macs. It's a little bulky but looks really sleek on your desk. I now have two of them and will upgrade to one with Thunderbolt soon.

I bought this hard drive because i had gotten the impression from people who owned them that they are great for macintosh computers. Fast easy, fordable. I am so disappointed with it. It makes my computer run extremely slow and is very loud. I will never buy another one
