The 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0 is a cross-platform, high-capacity, high-performance external drive, well-suited to handle the backup and storage demands of creative professionals. Designed to work with either your Windows or Mac computer, this drive features a large capacity of 2TB, a 7200rpm disk speed, 32MB of onboard cache, and an impressive mix of three different interfaces. It has a blazing fast USB 3.0 port, an eSATA 3Gbps port, and two FireWire 800 ports.
Although Mac OS X typically doesn't support USB 3.0 connections, LaCie has created a driver that allows you to use this interface with your Mac (also requires a LaCie USB 3.0 card for your computer). Also with regard to Mac computers, the two FireWire 800 ports allow you to daisy-chain the drive. With the drive, you can transfer data at up to 130MB/s via USB 3.0, 115MB/s via eSATA, and 85MB/s via FireWire 800.
The drive also features a heat-sink design for heat dissipation as well as a programmable eco-management mode. It comes with Genie Backup Assistant and Intego Backup Assistant sfotware for backing up your data and restoring any data that you might have accidentally deleted. Whether you stack it with other d2 Quadra drives, mount it in a rack, or stand it upright, this drive is a versatile, exceptional backup and storage solution for the consumer or creative professional.

I've only had the drive for a few weeks but it has certainly been a pleasure thus far. Perhaps I can come back in a few months and mention whether or not the drive spontaneously combusted.I am using it as the primary drive for editing HD video of weddings and events. It should last me for about 4 projects. Since a couple others who used this drive reviewed it to have a few issues, I was admittedly a bit nervous to throw the money down on this one. However once I backed up my raw files on another temporary backup drive, all my anxiety about this drive went away and I was free to enjoy it. It's pretty darn heavy for its size...which is probably a really good thing. I trusted it's durability the moment I touched it. This just makes it slightly less convenient if I want to edit at Starbucks or something. The built-in software is super easy to use and allows you to partition the drive however you please. It's the first time I've ever used a drive's software (I usually simply use Apple's Disk Utility) but since I am testing the drive for the first time I decided to just go all out.The previous version of this drive (2tb d2 quadra with usb 2.0) has great reviews, but I got this one in hopes that apple with acquire usb 3.0 support with the upcoming line of ivy bridge macs.

Let me start by saying that I own 18 LaCie d2 Quadra USB2/firewire drives, most of them 2TB. I use them to store video for a large doc film project as well as other video projects.
I have never had an issue with these drives. They have been a cornerstone of my work flow and of my confidence in that work flow.
I thought nothing of buying the new version of this drive with USB3. But I have had a world of pain and angst since their purchase.
The new drives froze my MacPro tower every time I used them. Then I switched the drives to my brand new (2 month old) MacBook Pro laptop, which also froze repeatedly. The drives would shut off and not remount. Other times I could not unmount the drives. I also had trouble transferring files.
I am always on a deadline -- the fact that these drives were clearly not ready for primetime is absolutely unacceptable. I sent them all back and scoured other stores for the last remaining d2 Quadras they had with USB 2. I found four and bought them up.
I searched for others online who had similar issues the day I received my drives and experienced the problems. These drives were brandy new on the market so I did not find anyone who had problems that particular day. However, two days later I searched again and found many many people who had experienced the same issues I did.
I'm sure LaCie will fix this issue eventually, but COME ON, it's unprofessional to have released these drives before the kinks were worked out. MY CAREER DEPENDS ON ELECTRONICS LIKE THESE WORKING PROPERLY RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.
So disappointed in a company (LaCie) I had come to view almost as a partner in my work over the years.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
Using this as one of two external backup drives for my photos, music, docs, etc. Like the solid build, good construction quality as opposed to the cheap feeling plastic exteriors of some other brands. Quiet. Blue activity light on front is subdued and not obnoxious. Am connecting via eSATA and have experienced no problems at all. I did however have to order a longer cable from B&H. The one included was just too short.
Have only had it for a few weeks so time will tell, but so far so good.
LaCie online tech support is prompt but not sure they understand what I'm asking. The drive is working fine but I just had a few questions and they don't seem to comprehend. That's why I rated 4 stars versus a 5.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
My purchase was to keep backups of some of the family Mac laptops but pay less than current cloud service rates. At $, this LaCie will do nicely. I've been using a "twin" .5T and its been fabulous for backing up busines and personal documents, photo dbs, and music. More space means more laptops and better return on investment. I wasn't all that happy with the "automatic" setup LaCie installs on the desktop. I ended up using the Mac file utility to get the drive configured just the way I wanted it. The Lion OS also made it a pain by interrupting with requests from "Time Machine" which seems like it should never have been in the way. The latter has nothing to do with the drive. Its been solid now for almost a month. I've owned the .5T for at least 2 years so if that's any indication, my strategy is working. At $ a month, I've already saved at least $ on it .. nearly half the cost of the drive.

Received item to replace a Seagate Drive. Paid a 20 yr computer repair professional to set it up for me - He tried multiple times to get it to install on 3 different computers to no avail. He suggested to return it immediately due to its obvious unreliability. I own a Lacie that is awesome. This was an unhappy experience purchasing a [$] product that didn't work straight out of the box.

I bought this hard drive primarily to use with my iMac via Firewire. The speeds are good. The design of d2 is very smart, with solid aluminum enclosure, and a very convenient quick launch button in front. The drive works seamlessly. I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever so far. Overall, I'd highly recommend it for both casual users and pros.

I purchased this d2 Quadra to store my photo archives and backups. Overall, I'm really happy with the way the drive works. I have set up automatic backups and also programmed the quick launch button on the front panel to manually start the backup program. The drive came with all the necessary cables. So far it's been running very smoothly, quietly, and pretty fast.

I use this drive to edit HD video (720p - which I keep backed up on my LaCie 1TB Rugged, also a great drive) with my Mac. This is my third LaCie external hard drive, because they make great products. The single issue I've ever head is needing to do a directory repair the very first time I plugged the drive in - regardless of that, I would still highly recommend this drive.

I've installed d2 Quadra a couple of months ago to organize backup of my main computer. It's been working well so far. I like the fact that it's totally quiet, as advertised. The drive has a good choice of interfaces, and can be easily connected to any computer.

I had a earlier version, but needed a new one to replace a backup I have from another manufacturer. My original was easy to use and set up, and has never failed me. I expect the new one to be the same, and so far it is. I tote one of them around with me between two homes, even though they are not billed as portables, an extra bonus for some. Looks great on the desktop and you can stack them if you want in the optional rack.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I'm a system admin for a small office. This year we've switched to external drives from LaCie. We bought three external drives total, including two d2Quadra. So far they've been working well. Nobody had any issues with them. The drives have been connected to the network, and integrated into the office work space. Even though we use them for long hours every day, they don't overheat or make any noise. I'd recommend them without hesitation.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I have been buying LaCie drives for many years (15+). This is the first drive from LaCie that I've had problems with. I'm not sure of the reason. Perhaps because it has USB 3 in addition to the regular ports. I have an early-2009 MacPro tower and connect via Firewire 800. This drive will prevent the machine from starting up to the desktop unless this drive is powered off before start-up. Once the machine has fully started up, then turning on this drive, the drive will mount without problems. Otherwise the startup of the machine will "freeze" at the blue screen displayed prior to the desktop appearing.
Otherwise, there are no read or write issues with this drive. This drive is fast and having 2GB of storage for backup is very nice.
While the drive works well once mounted, because of the startup issues, I can not fully recommend this drive to others.
