The 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0 is a cross-platform, high-capacity, high-performance external drive, well-suited to handle the backup and storage demands of creative professionals. Designed to work with either your Windows or Mac computer, this drive features a large capacity of 3TB, a 7200rpm disk speed, 32MB of onboard cache, and an impressive mix of three different interfaces. It has a blazing fast USB 3.0 port, an eSATA 3Gbps port, and two FireWire 800 ports.
Although Mac OS X typically doesn't support USB 3.0 connections, LaCie has created a driver that allows you to use this interface with your Mac (also requires a LaCie USB 3.0 card for your computer). Also with regard to Mac computers, the two FireWire 800 ports allow you to daisy-chain the drive. With the drive, you can transfer data at up to 130MB/s via USB 3.0, 115MB/s via eSATA, and 85MB/s via FireWire 800.
The drive also features a heat-sink design for heat dissipation as well as a programmable eco-management mode. It comes with Genie Backup Assistant and Intego Backup Assistant sfotware for backing up your data and restoring any data that you might have accidentally deleted. Whether you stack it with other d2 Quadra drives, mount it in a rack, or stand it upright, this drive is a versatile, exceptional backup and storage solution for the consumer or creative professional.

This product does not have the best reviews on many sites. They mostly cite problems with (1) it failing, and (2) it not working correctly with computers that go into sleep mode (particularly Macs). And, (3) people who are clueless. I have found it completely reliable, but it requires reading the directions, unlike most external enclosures. (Lacie did this so that one could conveniently have the drive partitioned into a NTFS (Win7) portion and another partition for transferring files between non-Windows computers without dealing with yet more software, and have a choice of partition sizes.)
The drive looks good, with a silver finish. It's a little noisy when it is being used heavily. This will only be problematic to those who plan to use it for live recording. It has a brighter blue light than one really needs.
More important, the drive has plenty of space and every interface one would want these days: USB 3.0, firewire 800, and eSATA. That's the real reason I got it, and I have ended up needing each for different situations. I like that all the cables come with the drive--you don't need to go out and buy the cables next.
Harddrives aren't exciting, but this one seems to work well and is the only one currently on the market that has all the interfaces I need.

I'm a long time LaCie user. I've been editing video professionally for many years. I own several 2TB d2 Quadras that have performed very well on the road for years. If necessary I can even edit directly to them without a problem.
The 3TB drive is a nightmare. It goes to sleep and then will not wake up. It has locked up my entire system on many occasions. Calling LaCie for help was useless. I spent hours of my time trying to fix a new drive through their support. LaCie knows they shipped a bad batch of drives but does not want to bear the cost of fixing their mistake. Shame on them. Their final solution was for me to send in the drive at my expense and they would take a look. This is after I had to loaded data on the drive so I would need to but another drive to copy my files to. So how much money do they expect me to lose on this deal?
When your in a small business you don't have the luxury of large capital budgets. You have to make your money count. You need a company that's going to stand behind their products. When I think of the amount of billable time I spent trying to fix a new drive it angers me. It still falls asleep if left on and still will lock up my system. Anyone who edits video knows that can cause a lot of problems. I have to use it as store of old files and only turn it on when I have to. I chalk this up as a learning experience and warn anyone considering buying this unit.
Shame on LaCie for putting this on the backs of their customers.

Comments about 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
PLEASE READ ENTIRE COMMENT: I have more than 15 Lacie external drives. They have all worked flawlessly, and I have been extremely please with each of them. HOWEVER, I do NOT recommend this USB3.0 version for Mac users. I had the same major issue with it over and over. I have returned it and purchased the USB2.0 version, which is working perfectly.
If you read through the other comments on the B&H webiste, you will see many other users have this same issue. The drive will seem to work fine, but then when you computer goes to sleep and wakes up, the drive appears to be mounted, but you can not access it. I had to manually shut off the drive and restart it. Luckily, this did not cause any loss of files or data. This does not happen all of the time, but more often than not. I tried several fixes and it was not until I read the reviews, that I realized this issue was global and not due to my setup.
I do NOT recommend this USB3.0 version for Mac users, but I do highly recommend the USB2.0 version.
As always, B&H went above and beyond to help me return my item and get an appropriate one!

This drive is a beauty. It has a very sleek design, and a solid construction. It comes with a removable stand, and all the cables for each of the available interfaces. I use my drive with Firewire mainly for working with video, and it works well. The speeds are good. The drive is also very quiet, and was very easy to setup.

I've had this installed on my iMac for a couple of months now and it seems to work perfectly. I use it to store my large video and photo archives. I work mostly with Firewire. The speeds are good. The aluminum enclosure is well built, and assists with heat dissipation. All cables that might be needed are included. Excellent value for money!

The 3TB LaCie worked and works exactly as it should. i was overloaded with 48K images and transferring the images to the LaCie was easy (thanks to the pre-loaded soft ware) and has resulted in a stable environment. Memories saved!

Right now, I'm only rating this at 2 Stars because I don't yet trust that it will continue to work the way it is supposed to.
I have Mac OS 10.7.2 and the software to update the product was very difficult to download and install (it doesn't install automatically, you have to do it manually, and there is no confirmation that it installed properly). I still don't know if the software is properly installed.
Because of the difficulties with the software and the fact that the setup and operation is so different than my prior 1TB LaCie, I am very leery of depending upon this drive. I may, in fact, end up getting a Western Digital 2TB disk.
Another little peeve with this drive is that the front button does not turn off the drive as it did in prior drive versions.

Comments about 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I've used LaCie external hd drives in my photo business for performance and reliability. However, the 3TB LaCie d2 was a non-performer. The drive shut down completely after 30-40 minutes of use. This happened repeatedly while duplicating files from a another Lacie drive.

Comments about 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:
I've been using LaCie drives for many years. I needed more capacity and my initial thought was to upgrade an existing LaCie drive by installing a 3TB drive in the case. I looked at [@] and found that a bare 3TB drive would cost me more than the same drive in a LaCie case. So, I still have my old 1TB drive plus I have my new 3TB drive and I pocketed the $50 cost difference.

This unit is compact and has tons of memory. It's my 4th LaCie disk. So far (about a month) it works great. I thought USB 3.0 would help speed things up, but the PCI is not yet available. eSATA was the next best thing.

I purchased two 2TB Lacie drives a few years ago. I also purchased the four plug Lacie ESata card. The drives have worked flawlessly for years. They are now full. I bought the 3TB model for future jobs. If you want to instantly access older clips from the drives you can include them on your timeline without having to import them into your main video drive on your computer. I tried many other external drives; all of them failed. The Lacie drives work flawlessly. Buy them with confidence.

I use this product to store all my photo and video media. I use Lightroom, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.
I wasted my money on 3 of these drives. They go to sleep even during tasks like outputting files and transcoding media, so when you come back to your computer, the program will be frozen and you will have to manually eject the LaCie disk and crash your program to get them back. I was assured in July of 2011 that the firmware to fix the problem would be out in 1 week... it has been 3 months and my brand new drives are killing the productivity I need to make a living.

I use a Mac to make movies from film and so need tons of storage. This Lacie sits beautifully on the shelve next to several of its predecessors which have already fullfilled their duties. So far this new addition works as smoothly as the others in my library. I believe they all do what they are designed to do if given proper expectations and care. Simply the easiest to use and the most compatible with my equipment.

This is my fourth LaCie drive. I did have one external drive fail to power up after using it for a year. But had secondary back up and LaCie is replacing the drive for me. They are a great company to deal for product support. They respond in less than 24 hours, are always friendly and helpful and even follow up later to make sure any issues you have are resolved.
