The B+W 39mm #25 Red (090) Filter is a basic contrast filter, primarily for use with black and white film. This red filter dramatically darkens skies, cuts through haze, and increases overall contrast. When compared to the orange #22 filter, the #25 produces very dark, almost black skies and a surreal contrast between foliage, clouds, and sky. There is an 8x filter factor with this filter, requiring an increase of 3 stops for normal exposure.
B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Comments about B+W 39mm #25 Red (090) Filter:
I have a Leica M3 with a 50/2 Summicron DR and a 35/3.5 Summaron. Rather than use older Leitz filters, I chose to use the B+W filters because of their reputation for good glass and solid build.
I wasn't disappointed. They are built like a tank with a good brass ring. They screwed onto the E39 thread of my Summicron with ease and stayed put (don't over-tighten!). I didn't purchase the MRC product, but I'm happy with regular coating. The light red filter is a fairly basic filter if you want to get into B&W photography as it gives contrasts to skies and clouds. Your blue skies will appear quite dark next to the clouds.
All in all, good choice!
