The Volt is made from a rigid frame designed to handle heavy loads and then, when you reach your destination, serve as a mount for your camera or light. As a matter of fact, the top pocket of the Volt will hold your camera already mounted to the frame so when you're ready to shoot, just open the pack, unfold the frame and your camera is already in shooting position. Or, attach your lighting head and be just as ready to do a portrait or produce fill light for an outside shot. For smaller items, the Volt has numerous storage compartments for support gear such as batteries, filters, memory cards or cables.
The Volt is made from heavy-duty, water-resistant Cordura nylon so you need not be afraid to go out when it's raining. Besides, it has a wonderful rain fly that covers the entire bag - even the tripod. The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable as is the wide waist belt that distributes the weight evenly on your hips. The included Clik ChestPort System for wearing an accessory pack on your chest as well as several attachment points for connecting various accessories, make this a more than versatile backpack. I decided to choose this particular bag because of its unique design features, especially with the ability to extend the braces which I use for mounting a secondary camera or my Tascam recorder. Its like having a second tripod without having to bring an extra one along. The bag is spacious and it has a lot of compartments.
This bag almost hits the mark for my style of work. But here is why it falls short at the moment: 1) fully loaded, their is to much of a gap between the cover on the bag and the compartments, so what happens is that I have literally opened my bag on several occasions and have found my gear shifted or falling right out of the compartments. 2) The bag has all the bells and whistles for comfort, but really is not that comfortable so far. Specifically the overall padding for the back and the hips. Therefore it has forced me to change the amount of gear that I bring along for my longer treks and 3) the beauty of the bag is the brace, but it sure adds more weight than desired. For right now, I will keep the bag and keep testing it, because certain components of the bag are awesome, such the materials used, the built in tripod or light stand and how much it can carry overall. Some of these initial features are troubling - only time will tell if I keep this bag around.
