After hearing a hum while recording through the line-in input while using a computer's USB port as a power source, I was concerned I may hear the same thing out of this unit --since it's a powered USB. No worries! While using this power plug I get absolutely no noise.
I am very pleased with this product, and happy to be saving money on batteries.

This power adapter has a feature that can not be supplied by the use of batteries..........in that with the AC power the led screen is lit continously. With batteries, it is on only momentarily which make use of the TASCAM recorder not customer friendly.

The DR-5 portable recorder operates with batteries, but if you are at a fixed location, it can be very convenient to have a power source that won't fail in the middle of an important recording session.
