LaCie 2TB F.A. Porsche Designed Desktop Hard Drive
LaCie's 2TB F.A. Porsche-Designed Desktop Hard Drive is a high-capacity, high-speed external hard drive with a sophisticated, bold look and a thick, protective 3mm aluminum-casing. This drive can store a maximum capacity of 2TB and, using the USB 3.0 interface, can transfer that data at up to 5Gbps. To note, while Mac OS X doesn't natively support USB 3.0, you can add USB 3.0 to your Mac computer by installing LaCie's USB 3.0 Mac driver and a LaCie USB 3.0 computer card. The USB 3.0 interface is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so you can connect it to any computers that use this older interface.
Along with the drive, you will receive an online Wuala cloud storage account with 10GB for a year and software that includes Lacie's Public-Private as well as Backup Assistant. With this software, you can easily password protect your drive and manage crucial backups for your computer. For managing your power-settings on the drive, included with the software is also an automatic eco-mode that boasts upwards of 77% energy savings.

I have plenty of external hard drives and it is not the best but it certainly is up there. The drive's interface is USB 3.0 being backwards compatible with USB 2.0 makes it very versatile. The chassis is very well designed, looks beautiful and has a really nice soft white light. I always love the aluminum chassis, it gets real hot but that is what is keeping the hard drive cool with a fanless unit. USB 3.0 has great bandwidth, it streams HD videos perfectly. It can hold transfer rates for a 13.1GB file with speeds of at least 90.8MB\s with a burst speed of 110MB\s ending in about 2mins 37secs. It uses a green drive so it will go to sleep if not in use while it is on, so it will just take a second to get it going again (not really an issue I say). Works for both PC and Mac's (everyone just has to learn how to format drives correctly before usage; please be aware it can be done with or without the included software and the software can be a little limiting).

I have a Lacie Rugged that I love, and that works beautifully with both my Mac and PC laptops (after formatting).
I needed a non-portable for home storage, and opted for this Porsche. It arrived and appears durable and well made, with quality cables. But my PC would not recognize it. After several attempts at downloading software updates, it still wouldn't load. So I tried it on my Mac. The Mac didn't initially recognize it either, but after a couple of attempts at formatting, and entering the disk utility, I received an error message that said that the "Disk needs repair". I contacted Lacie support, and while the agent is very knowledgable, my email chats were only answered every 24 hours (maybe due to the time difference). After 5 days of this, I've finally submitted for a refund, which is being processed by B&H. Sadly, I don't think I'll order it again, due to lack of confidence. There seems to be a glitch.

OK, it's a completely functional and reliable 2TB HD with a USB port and some software you can use or not... Just like 100 other drives. So what's left to set this one apart? Well, at this point, it's basically a fashion show... Go out and hire Porsche to design a fancy overlay for your drive in polished low sheen metal, very macho, very high torque, very stylish and minimal and hip. This is a hard drive that would have no problem getting a date. Oh yes, and when data enters or leaves, there's a cool little light that blinks to let you know that you are among the cognoscenti.

Lacie has been my choice for external hard drives for many years. Working as designer and photographer I have produced a ridiculous amount of digital files, and a major concern having it all kept in a safe place.
Lucky or not, I've never have any issue with my Lacie hard drives. I have 4 of theses stacked and they work just great (never experience overheating). I've tried Seagate and Iomega in the past, but somehow they all ended up crashing after a 1 1/2 year of use.
The Lacie Porsche series are beautifully designed. They are a little heavier than the general hard drives but the aluminum case has a very distinctive appeal. Once it is for desktop use the weight is not an issue for me.
A nice feature this model has comparing to other Lacie hard drives is the LED indicator placed in front. This way when they are stacked (like mines) you can easily known which one in turned on/off and working.
From my experience using Lacie this is the model I like most.

I've been using numerous LaCie external USB drives for years, and have never had a single problem. I use them for backing up my primary system, and for external storage of multimedia. My system is Windows XP SP3, USB 2.0 (I got these drives for future compatibility with my next PC).
I run file system tests weekly, complete surface tests and defrags quarterly, and check disk logs for errors, so when I have confidence in these drives, it's justified.
The one down-side is that these drives are 5900 RPM instead of 7200, meaning that the combination of head-setting time, seek time, and latency time *may* be slower than if you used a 7200 drive, but that will likely happen only during operations like defrags or creating, copying, or moving many small files.
I got 3 of these drives. Highly recommended.

I use this product strictly for backup using 3rd party software, thus I formatted it to one large drive in NTFS for Windows 7 64. Since I got it connected, it has stayed connected and behaved itself very well.
The glitch comes with connecting it the first time. I just could not see the drive on my USB 3 ports, but I eventually saw it on my USB 2 port after several tries. Turns out to be a documented glitch with this drive. There is a timing issue and sometimes it works best to turn it on just as the boot gets to a certain point. I did not have to do that, but I expect that I got lucky. Still, it will eventually connect and it will stay connected through reboots, so I am happy with it.
It is a beautiful drive with excellent craftsmanship. The cables are very high quality, the best I own actually. Just be patient with getting it connected.

Due to the flooding in Thailand, hard drive and external hard drive prices are soaring. And upon hearing that prices might not fall until 2012... I pounced on the opportunity to buy a high quality large external hard drive. LaCie delivered. I spent a couple of days looking for cheaper 2TB externals but I couldn't find any that had USB 3.0 and a horde of great reviews. LaCie was my best choice as it was still decently priced yet higher quality than the competition.
