Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic
The MKH 416 transformerless, RF condenser is designed as a combination of pressure gradient and interference tube microphones. Very good feedback rejection, low proximity effect, 130 dB/SPL. Rugged and resistant to changing climate conditions. Ideal for boom, fishpole, and camera mounting.
Its excellent directivity and compact design, high consonant articulation and feedback rejection make the MKH 416 a superb all-around microphone for film, radio and television, especially for outside broadcast applications.
- Interference Tube Principle
- Pressure gradient receiver with short interference tube
- Employs RF-technology to control residual microphone noise. Optimizing the transducer's acoustic impedance results in a further improvement in low noise performance.
- The RF-design yields exceptionally low noise levels and is virtually immune to humidity and moisture.
- The comparatively low RF-voltage across the elements of the transducer also eliminates arcing and DC-bias creeping currents.

Used this in conjunction with the Beachtek DXA-SLR PRO HDSLR Audio Adapter and it worked perfectly. I was using a cheaper Audio-Technica shotgun before this and it's a night-and-day difference. Don't let the price scare you – you'll truly getting what you're paying for.

This mic has been a staple in the industry since the mid 1070s'. I remember my first days on the job (motion picture sound recordist0 in 1981 and the chief cameraman handed me my nagra, a bag of cables a boompole som lavs a hand mike and then like it was GOLD he hends over the 416, this is your best friend he told me. It was for 7 years until our shop went beta and 1 man bands ruled yje newsworld. Now retired and doing sound on a freelance basis and the 416 is still THE ONE, a great sounding never let you down mic. If you are being paid to gather sound INVEST in this mic.

This mic is just great. It's clear, crisp, and sensitive. Very directional to pick up great dialogue. It is THE standard microphone for film and television for a reason!! Great mic if you can afford. The NTG-3 is similar but nothing compares to this badboy. If you have the money, go for this one instead of the Rode.

I use the Sennheiser 416 for voiceovers primarily, but also for location sound. It's superb in both applications.
There are other shotguns that drift in and out of fashion but the 416 remains at the top of the class.
Only con I can think of, it's expensive. but you really do get what you pay for.

I just shot a water scene with two actors 4 feet from a boat in choppy water. The idea was to show that the two characters were hopelessly lost at sea and we were all worried about the splashing noises coming from the our 30 foot boat... lots of LOUD "splunk" sounds when waves hit the side of the boat. Well let me just tell you I showed the footage with the audio matched to a friend and he couldn't figure out how we got the sound so clear. He thought I was swimming with them holding a boom... NO IDEA there was a boat 4 feet away. That is how directional it is. And the audio clarity is perfect. Mix and record this sucker right and it will sound like any hollywood movie.
