- Through a pair of headphones, you can enjoy large-scale surround sound thanks to SILENT CINEMA. This is a variation of CINEMA DSP technology developed by Yamaha to allow you to listen privately to your favorite movies or other multi-channel sources. Virtual CINEMA DSP allows you to enjoy the effects of CINEMA DSP surround sound without using surround speakers and can be used with the front, center or presence speakers or even just front left and right speakers.
- Compressed Music Enhancer
- This receiver offers sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to allow playback that actually improves the sound of your compressed music formats like MP3 and WMA. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer enables richer, smoother highs and lows to reproduce your music as close to the original as possible.
- Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
- Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whisper-quiet dialogue to explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you don't want to disturb others.
- SCENE Device Control
- The RX-V871 offers four SCENE buttons to afford seamless operation of your new receiver. They come with default settings for DVD viewing, Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. At the touch of a button, you can enjoy any of these sources. Additional SCENE settings are available like iPod Listening, XM Listening, TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing so you can customize your shortcuts. You can browse and select the settings easily by changing the Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. You can make settings for one time only, or make them replace the original default settings and even change the SCENE names to fit your liking.
- YPAO Automatic System Calibration
- Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) employs a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for your room, wherever your speakers are placed. It checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker and then sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets several parameters like the speaker size, distance of the speakers and even sound pressure level. This process allows you to achieve optimum sound for your space.
- Zone 2 Audio
- This receiver allows you to configure a multi-zone audio system. The 'Zone 2' feature lets you set the unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone and the second zone, and you can even control the unit from the second zone using the system remote for convenient, seamless expansion of your audio.

- Kick back and relax, because you can control this receiver with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch simply by downloading the free AV Controller App from the Apple App Store. I am moving from an older Yamaha RX-V1000 receiver. The RX-V871 is the current top unit in Yamaha's mid-tiered product line. It includes newer features than my lower-end-of-the-top-tier unit. The inclusion of HDMI switching, support of HD versions of DTS and Dolby, and Internet connectivity compensate for the loss of 50 Watts on the amp side. That Yamaha support 8, 6, and 4 ohm spoeaker is critical to me and something competative brands don't do at this tier. It continued to support my Magnaplanar speakers well.
