The Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives from Newer Technology is an extremely convenient way to access data on a SATA internal drive without having to install that drive into your computer. The Voyager Q can hold drives of either the 2.5" or 3.5" form factor that are no greater than 3TB in capacity and that are of any SATA standard, whether that's SATA 1.5Gbps, SATA 3Gbps, or SATA 6Gbps. Within those criteria, this dock supports hard drives and solid state drives.
For connecting the dock to your computer, you have a bounty of interfaces. The dock features a super-fast USB 3.0 port, one eSATA port, two FireWire 800 ports, and one FireWire 400 port. With the USB 3.0 interface, you can transfer data at a blazing maximum rate of 5Gbps. Plus, that interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1 connections. With all of these ports, you can connect the dock to your Mac or Windows computer and let the data flow!

I own several laptops and desktop pc's.
I also own a number of SATA IDE to USB devices.
This device is a step up over all the other types that I own.
Very Easy to use, but most important for me is that it accepts SATA II and III regular HD and SSD.
With another tiny adapter it will easily use IDE drives also, but this is not too important as most of us techies have many SATA drives sitting around. And if you don't they are cheap.
I am using this device for 2 things.
1 = to store ghost backups to older drives, because burning to DVD is not always feasable and this is waay faster and cheaper.
2 = To save all my videos to Hard drives, because the same as the backups, the cost of a new drive to save my videos to vs. burning terrabytes to dvd = time and money.
This device is only a tiny bit slower than a direct connect SATA or USB 2.0 or 3.0 connection.
This is defineatly a device that I recommend to anyone else doing large backups and/or burning tons of DVD's.
And its speed is really immpressive and mostly restriced only by the HD that you plug into it.
I have done speed tests using every type that I own and the speed is very immpressive.

Small, simple, powerful backup, and reliable so far (several weeks). But the info at the NewerTech website suggests this will boot your computer. It won't boot my Mac on either FW400 or 800 using SuperDuper clones, which are generally 100% effective. This is true even after I checked that both my root drive and the clones are GUID partitioned. Since a bootable clone is one of the best things to store offsite, it makes this drive dock a good deal less useful. It looks like I'll just use it to backup or archive Aperture vaults, older movies, and other large files.

I only used it so far to read and reformat an old drive from an almost retired Apple G5 Power PC.
It read the drive, and allowed me to reformat using a new MacBookPro via an added on USB.3 express card.
So far so good!

Product worked as advertised for about five minutes and then stopped working. In any combination of 3.5" drives and computers, it would rev up but then stop working.

Straight out of the box the Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock does the job and more. I do jobs where clients bring me hard drives with raw media on them .
To be able to just pop the drive into the Voyager ,Immediately its recognized and I"m up and working. Has a good transfer rate for video .The unit comes supplied with every connector needed for fast data transfer . It's a dream come true for me . I bought 2 . I plan to buy 3 more. What I would like to see is an indicator light that is clearly visible to gage the activity of the drive, other that that ,I think its a great unit.

The Voyager is the perfect little tool for hot-swapping out hardrives. I use this to dump projects to after completion and store them right on the shelf...in a, Mukii ZIPO 3.5" HDD Protector.

The dock will mount the hard drive on to your OS. It also has a variety of connectivity options such as FW 800, FW 400 and USB.

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
I have purchased three Voyager Quad Interface Docks. I upgraded once after two years of stellar service and gave my first one to a friend. It is still working fine. The third dock was for my son and he loves it. Popping hard drives in and out has many benefits and being able to use multiple interfaces is useful too, though I have primarily used the Firewire 800 connection.

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
I use this dock for making backups of my working files. I can take a drive from my archive, write new files, and put it back in the archive, all without using a screwdriver like I used to have to with my old drive enclosure. Works great, fast, and reliably, and doesn't take up a lot of space on my tabletop. Highly recommended.

Having almost all connections available really helps speed things up hen transferring large amounts of data such as cloning disks or backing up..
If this thing had thunderbolt I would give it a 5, but that wont happen for some time.
Having FireWire800 is a must if you are a Mac user, or the option to use esata on pcs or Mac pros... Really convienent!!

I use this for back-ups with 3tb 3.5" internal drives. Very convenient to pop the drives in and out of this "toaster" dock.
Firewire is a good addition; my old toaster dock only had USB and couldn't see 3tb drives, but this one does.

Works. Tested using ATTO Disk Benchmark tool. Averaging 85MBPS sustained on a Sony Vaio F-Series Core-i7 laptop USB3 using Western Digital WD10EVDS SATA-300 7200rpm drive formatted to NTFS. Expected way better, but still pretty fast. Getting a little quicker speeds on a server with USB3 but still only in the 90MBPS range.

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
I used this product successfully to clone the original 80 GB DDD in an early 2006 Intel MacBook Pro onto a Hitachi 500 GB 7200 rpm Travelstar HDD. The device is very easy to use. I used the Firewire interface to do the cloning operation because of the speed. I took one star away only because it turned out that this early Intel Mac is not fully supported with the dock. You can't boot from a drive in the dock on this model laptop using the Firewire interface, but it worked with the USB interface. You have to cold start the computer holding the Option key down for about 20 sec until the drive in the dock appears on the startup screen as a bootable drive. Once I figured this out (with some very quick and good help from OWC), I was completely satisfied; especially at this price. OWC said that the device is fully functional with the newer Mac models. I would recommend this device to anyone
