The Oxford Inflator from Sonnox is a plug-in that is able to provide an increase in the apparent loudness of almost any program material without obvious loss of quality or audible reduction of dynamic range. The push to get louder and louder mixes and masters using traditional compressors and limiters has resulted in harsh sounding audio, full of overloads and pumping. The plug-in was developed in response to requests from mixing and mastering engineers to help them survive the "loudness wars" by delivering louder masters without compromising the audio source.
The inflator process avoids introducing damaging increases in the peak level of the signal and can bring power, presence and warmth to the program material. It can provide an additional headroom overload margin above digital maximum with a subtlety and musical character reminiscent of tube systems. It will even add apparent volume to a full scale white noise signal, or add musicality to previously clipped signals.
Used more subtly, it can add natural warmth and character to acoustic or jazz mixes. It can add presence, softness and depth when used on single instruments, or when applied to percussion and drum tracks, produce amazing dynamic presence, tightness and volume.
