I was not wild about the LaCie ruggeds when they first hit the scene. Inspired by a design from Captain Scarlet seemed to be a bizarre angle to take. At least, if you've SEEN Captain Scarlet. None the less, these little babies are pretty reliable in my experience. They're perfect for downloading footage in dubious locations. They're bus-powered, so if you have a producer that insists on dumping footage in a 15-pass during a company move, these drives will save your skin. Also, if you're shooting somewhere with wonky power. You'll feel comfy passing them off to whomever at the end of the day. I don't really recommend playing hockey or football with them, despite the fun shape and size, but one mustn't treat them like a house of cards either.
The triple interface ensures that you'll be able to use these on whatever crazy computer you're saddled with, be it your own blazing DIT station, or some hand-me-down laptop that a shoe-string budget production slaps in front of you.
I'd buy more of these things.

Unfortunately I have been through 2 of these drives, neither of which lasted more than....well as soon as I received them. Both drives were DOA. Returned both and will probably not order another...ever. Oh and their customer service seemed like it was cumbersome to work with, so I returned it to the store I bought it from.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
I work with video editing, video post and animation an very often have to move to different places with my projects, so this is an excellent way to, not only transport heavy volumes of digital footage, so you can avoid manipulating your desktop hard drives (like in my case) but also work directly in the drive, because of its high speed and stability. I've been working with this model of portable hd, and with the LaCie brand for many years and never have any problem. Is an excellent choice.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
I use this drive to record sensitive acoustic music, often it sits only 3-4-5 feet from the music source with no problem of acoustically bleeding into the mics.
It's the quietest drive I've ever used, it's the most dependable drive I've ever used (NEVER had one fail after 5 years and other drives crashing left and right - NOT THIS ONE!).
I'm thinking to slowly replace all other drives I own with Lacie Rugged - just great. And it almost looks good! It's actually nice looking if you get the non-orange rubber covers, but at least I can find the orange ones anywhere I've put it down.

I love this little Lacie drive. I bought 2 of these as scratch disks for my direct capturing from the Canon XH-ALs and I couldn't be happier with it. Works great around the office as a huge disk. Best part is you don't plug it into the wall. Plug and play ready. Works great with Premiere Pro 5.5

Love the compact size and durable construction of this LaCie portable hard drive. We've only had the hard drive for a couple weeks so I can't speak to longevity, but the set up was a snap and transferring photos from our Mac has been simple.

I have used the old style triple interface drives for a while as my default bus powered storage. This new style is faster and upgraded interfaces make it more versatile.

I hadn't realized this drive could run off the Firewire cable- no power required. Firewire 800, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, no power cable. What more could I ask for?

I haven't used this product on the long run, but the reading speed of very heavy video file seems to work fine. And this is what I have bought it for.
So I think a good product even so the box seems quite thin!

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
I have seven of these drives, and I'm delighted with them. As a videographer and professor, I do lots of different kinds of videos. In the classroom I often record video in real time directly to a Rugged drive. In the office I store raw and edited video to Rugged drives. The drive's 7200 rpm speed is perfect for video. I have edited video in Europe, Asia, and Africa on my LaCie Rugged drives. The drives are tough, light, and fast.

Love the size and portability. Used as back-up disk. At first our MacBook Pro didn't allow the Lacie to setup or mount using the normal Lacie setup software (which usually works fine), but I was able to solve this by going into Disk Utility and reformatting the drive. Now it is working fine as a back-up disk. I am a big fan of Lacie ruggeds for their portability and size. Would definitely recommend.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
This product from LaCie was dead on arrival. The Hard Drive tried to load my data, then could not be recognized by my computer afterwards.
Appears that the USB and/or FW800 power is not adequate for what otherwise should be an excellent hard drive.
Will not buy another hard drive without a deidcated power supply outside of the data transfer cables.

We use the hard drives to send our church services to other campuses & these drives have worked well as traveling drives each week. This version of the rugged drive is new so we haven't used it yet. We have had a few of the old drives that have had to be swapped out because one of the connectors had failed but other than that it is a good product.

I use this product to back up my Final Cut Pro editing material. Good thing about it that it's easy to set up and works properly. The only problem I had with it so far, I couldn't use it on the Mac computer at my school with the older software version (OSX 10.7). So, in order to use it on your Mac you should have a newer software version.

I provide these (and the earlier model) to all of our field producers, they have been rock solid. We have about 20 of them - they have been dropped, shipped, and have traveled around the world with no problems. My go to drives.
