The 1TB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive from LaCie is a rough-and-tumble ready, high-speed, ultra-portable hard drive. In terms of protection, it features the famous orange, rubberized shock-resistant, exterior sleeve, aluminum anti-scratch casing, internal rubber bumpers, and a 1000g shock-resistant hard drive. Built to military specifications, you can be sure that the drive is protected from damage that can occur during daily use. If off, the drive can withstand drops of up to 2 meters.
The drive features a 5400rpm disk speed and can connect to your computer via the super-fast USB 3.0 port or via one of two FireWire 800 ports.* The USB 3.0 port is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and the FireWire 800 ports are backwards compatible with FireWire 400. With the included software suite, you can setup the drive, establish AES 256-bit encryption on the drive, automatically backup your computer's data, and save up to 10GB of data online. The software also includes an Automatic Eco mode that lowers the drive's power consumption by 40% when it's not in use.

As a student who edits a lot video and audio, I've always needed more space to store files. Not only that, but I needed something that was light-weight, portable, and resilient to any damage from running around place-to-place. This was my solution.
It fits the bill for everything I wanted. It's also fast and internally powered so I don't need to have a power outlet wherever I'm trying to use it. Basically it's been a dream come true, and I don't regret purchasing it at all.

I take at least two of these with me whenever I travel to shoot. I love that it's durable, bus powered and has two FW800 so I can daisy chain at high speed (I think I've gotten 4 running from a single laptop port).
I have a few older ones and none of them have ever failed (knock on wood).
The only way I can think to improve it would be to have some kind of port cover so dust and debris don't get in there. In practice this has never been a real problem though.
Also, a 50gb or similar size would be handy to use to deliver large jobs to clients. Maybe you could even stick some prepaid stamps on the side and they could just drop it in a mailbox to send it back when they've downloaded the files?!

This thing works fine and the USB 3.0 is very fast but I wish it also had a standard USB to mini USB port. it hasn't happened yet but there will be a time when I misplace the cord or forget it at home and in that instance it'd be nice to be able to use a stanford cord.

I bought one of these and liked it so much I ordered a second.
Good piece of gear, small footprint, runs very quietly, and is powered by USB cable, so no messy power supplies.
I use one for Time Machine backups.
I partitioned the second for photo storage and for cloning my machine so I have a second start up drive.
So far so good, I have always had good service from LaCie products and expect the same from these little beauties.
