The AirPort Extreme Base Station from Apple is a compact Internet router with powerful wireless capabilities. The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers via the draft 802.11n wireless protocol. It also features three standard 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The router is also fully backwards compatible with legacy 802.11a/b/g devices. A USB port is present for printer and hard disk sharing.
The router also features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, as well as wireless security to insure that your data remains private. It includes configuration software for both Mac OS X and Windows, making it a true cross-platform solution.

got this to replace an old d-link that needed to be reset a couple times a day once we added an apple tv to the network. It was easy to setup and the wifi works great. One of the main reasons I got this router over another 802.11n router was the hard drive sharing feature. It turns out that that feature only works with HFS+ or FAT formatted drives, and my 2TB WD drive is formatted as NTFS, so I'm going to have to buy a new drive, format it as HFS+ and transfer all my files. Boo :-(

Having read other reviews, I anticipated an almost effortless set-up experience. That was not the case. The unit would not "talk" with my modem at first. Then I received error messages about "dual NAT" with not much explanation how to resolve. After speaking with Apple technical support, it was apparent that I had to set up the router as a bridge, which meant I couldn't use the "Guest" feature. Another way to resolve the "dual NAT" situation is to set up the modem as a pure modem or bridge, and configure the router normally. That done, however, the native router firewall responds to a "ping" and there's no way to configure it otherwise. So back to the original configuration with the router in bridge mode and no "Guest" feature. All of that said, the router has great signal and stability. It's cute, too.

Set up was a bit challenging but doable with Apple Support. Performance is outstanding. With old wireless router, computers kept dropping signals. Not any more! Super reliable.

This dual-band router arrived from B&H in just a few days and at a good price relative to other retailers. I've been using it for two weeks. Build quality seems comparable to other Apple products. It has a small footprint on my desk and I don't even notice it except for the small green light on the front when the room is dark. There is no fan noise so operation is silent. Features such as a USB port for a printer or flash drive are very handy. I have used several wireless devices (Windows laptop, Roku, iPod, etc.) all over my two-story home with no range related problems. In fact, I am using it as I write this review on an iMac. The owner's manual was overly confusing but setting up the router was actually easy. Once set up you can forget it which is great!

We use this to connect several computers in a databasing arrangement with an external drive and shared printer. Set up was painless and it is working just as we would hope. No complaints. Product shipped and arrived quickly too!

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Current Model):
The Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station is amazingly easy to set up. I knew it was supposed to show up as two routers though - My Airport Extreme" and "My Airport Extreme - 5GBz" It didn't, so a quick call to B&H Support solved the problem fast... those guys at B&H Support are sharp!
Positives: long range, 2.4 GHx and 5 GHz routers built-in and working simultaneously, super easy setup, guest account
Negatives: Don't enjoy contributing to Apple's already $500 billion net worth by paying prices that I believe should/could be reduced. I consider this the best router by far (I own 3), so that's the trade-off.

Quite the capable little router indeed. Prices Randomly change but still worth it for our Clients.
Ability to add Guest Network for Guest Users is a huge selling point.
Only thing annoying is that Apple changes the Model # of this Device almost every other Month...
No one knows if anything actuallyc changes or if there is atleast some new firmware of some form.
But if Firmware is the only change, then there is no reason why the Model number changes every other month?

I purchased the Airport Extreme based on a friend's recommendation, to replace a NetGear wireless router that was 6 or 7 years old. It required us to reset the network every few days to allow a reliable connection. The Airport Extreme was easy to set up, provided strong signal, a faster connection than our previous router, and we haven't had to touch our network since we set it up almost 3 weeks ago. We are using the guest network capability and will be adding an external hard drive to the primary network. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Airport, and am enjoying the improved internet access.

The performance in my house is the same for download and for upload as if I was using an Ethernet cable directly.
The default setup was straightforward but understanding the options took a little bit of time and paying attention

I use the product to connect my 2011 iMac to the internet. I was so frustrated by my previous routers, because they would hang up and operate slowly. This is especially true in apartment buildings, where your network is subject to interference from dozens of other wifi networks, all on the 2.4GHz range. By buying this router, I can use the much more empty 5GHz band (the router sets it up completely automatically) and get much faster internet. And the 2.5GHz network is still there for my older devices.
This device is amazingly easy to set up if you have a mac.
It is kind of large for my taste.

Our old airport base was not compatible with the new Lion operating system. This works great! No problems. We do have a few issues with it working from time to time with our older laptop that is still snow leopard. An update to lion would fix though, I'm sure. Set up was easy, but it took a while for the computer to recognize it. Once it did, no problems!

I bought this to replace a 2003 or 04 model airport. Our previous model had been losing internet connection and we would have to go to the unit, turn it off, then on again to get it to work. Oh well, it lasted about 9 years with no issue! So I bought the new one from B&H, (by the way... B&H has the BEST prices on any electronic I price, and I have returned items too and they are great about that) I just took the wires out of my old and plugged into my new and we were up and running! Easy...thats why I love having all Apple products together.

I finally set up my home wi-fi network with the AirPort Extreme after struggling for way too long with a cheap wireless router. This thing was very simple to set up (with a Macbook Pro). I have had no problems connecting iPhones and a PS3 to it wirelessly, and it has not stalled or kicked me off even once yet. I only wish I had picked one of these up sooner.

Due to an up-tick in all of our existing WiFi enabled electronics, we had to replace our old D-Link router. I've been using Apple products for over 20 years and have, overall, been very satisfied with their performance. So, after some detailed research, decided to go ahead an purchase the Airport Extreme base station. It's performance has been excellent. It was easy to set up and could handle all of our electronics which included iPhones, AppleTV, three computers, a Kindle Fire, Wii, and Xbox. All connected quickly and effortlessly. The guest channel option has come in extremely handy for when my son's friends come over with their mobile players.

I knew it was time to leave my 802.11g router behind and move up to 802.11n, so I had been looking at various models. I also had nightmarish memories of spending over 2 hours on the phone with tech support during the setup of my old Netgear router (the automated setup just wouldn't work with my WinXP computer no matter what the support people tried).
My home setup includes 2 Macs and 2 Win7 PCs, and my personal experience with both is such that I use the Macs about 99% of the time; they have been bullet-proof and trouble-free. So I thought I'd try Apple's router.
I unboxed it, read the instructions, and was up and running inside of 10 minutes. Really. Not to say that current Cisco/Netgear/Belkin/Asus products won't do the same thing, but the Apple "just works."
Would recommend this to home user.

Easy set-up, great signal strength, works as advertised. The unit can't be opened and there is a battery inside used to power memory in the event of a power failure. I was concerned about this and called Apple who were very responsive - telling me the battery was good for 10+ years.
