The Pinmaster II from Leica with a snappy white surface and black trim provides a critical edge by measuring the distance to your next pin on the links. Destined to become the golfer's best friend - the Pinmaster II is a 7x24 optic that ranges distances up to 820 yards. It features First Target Logic which was developed specifically for the golf range. It will display the closer target instead of a farther target so that the golf flag will be distanced rather than the bushes beyond it.

The Pinmaster II is a versatile multi-tasking optic that's accurate, reliable, and durable. It can be set to calculate the distance to a stationary target, or switched to its scanning mode to track moving game. With a start-up time of 0.5 seconds - the Pinmaster II is ready with less than a moment's notice.

The Pinmaster II's housing is crafted from a rugged carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The internal components are held securely in place by a stable aluminum-alloy chassis. The entire device is sealed and totally waterproof. In fact - it's submersible. Its conservative form-factor allows it to slip into most pockets easily, while its light weight of less than 1/2 pound allows it to be comfortably carried for the whole 18 holes.

Leica has graced the Pinmaster II with a world-class optical system - the combination of a P40 phase-coated roof prism and AquaDura coated lenses ensures maximum clarity and detail in any weather. An adjustable ocular with a comfortable rubber eyecup offers a generous amount of eye relief and accurate focusing that accommodates eye/sunglass wearers. The easy-to-read red LED display is bright, tack sharp, and it can be set to display its measurements in yards or meters.

The Pinmaster II's 7x magnification offers another level of versatility - in a pinch, it can be used very effectively as a hand-held monocular. Its diminutive size belies its prowess as an efficient optic - even though the objective lens measures a scant 24 mm, Leica's optical refinements provide the Rangemaster with excellent twilight performance.

Optical Performance
  • Extended 15 mm eye relief accommodates eye/sunglass wearers
  • Prism system: roof prism with P40 phase coating for improved contrast
  • AquaDura coating: hydrophobic external lens treatment offers water and dirt repelling properties to ensure clear viewing at all times. Featuring enhanced abrasion resistance, AquaDura coating allows dirt, dust, and fingerprints to be removed easily

Comments about Leica Pinmaster II:

Right off the bat, this is a beautifully made piece of equipment, made by Leica in Portugal. Presumably, most of their "lower" priced products are made in Portugal now as opposed to Germany. I have been a Leica fan and aficionado for the past 30 years and have literally spent perhaps over a hundred thousand dollars on their products. I have sold much of what I have bought as I keep upgrading and rarely lose much money selling Leica on the secondary markets.

The pinmaster II has exceptional glass and an extremely bright viewfinder making it very easy to spot the flag or other objects. As a golfing tool unfortunately, it is quite impractical for the following reasons:

1) It is virtually impossible to hold the tiny spotting square steady on the flag. One would have to use a tripod to hold the spotting square steady. This is particularly galling if you walk the course and your heart rate is a bit higher than at rest, making your arms just that much unsteadier. I am generally trying to get a reading with one hand as my other hand is holding a club. But even with both hands, you cannot hold the square on the pin.
2) The only way to try and get a reading on the flag is in scan mode. However, it is not instantaneous scan but changes every half second. So you are not sure if you are getting the reading from the pin or from a neighboring tree or other object. When you play golf, you need an immediate readout and not spend a couple of minutes figuring out if you are actually reading the distance from the pin or elsewhere.
3) It is not easily attached to your bag or pull cart but there is a belt loop on the case, which means you have to continuously pull it in and out of the case.

I love Leica products but have to sadly return the Pinmaster II as it just does not work as a golfing tool. The ideal rangefinder should be able to be held in one hand, take a quick reading from an unsteady hand, be very portable i.e. easily attachable to the golf bag or your belt unobtrusively and be waterproof. The Leica is waterproof but the other qualities are not there.
