A B&W 37mm #103 Neutral Density 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.
Neutral Density filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2, 3, or 4 stops to suit individual situations.
Neutral Density filters permit you to create unique effects. When using high speed film in bright light, an ND filter will allow you to blur motion such as speeding cars or moving water. This permits adjustments in aperture and exposure that would normally not be possible without the filter.
Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

The filter ring is made from brass yielding a stronger product. Brass filter rings are also less prone to jamming. In addition, the seal between the glass and filter ring is exceptionally strong giving the filter added strength and durability.
In production, the filter glass is dropped into the empty filter ring from the rear and held in place with a threaded retaining ring; this is a definite advantage over a competitor who uses a spring clip to hold the glass in place. A threaded retaining ring will hold the glass firmly and securely in place to avoid the possibility of rattling and provide perfect parallelity and flatness to your front lens element for ideal optics. The part about additional filters not binding is due to the fact that brass is a very stable metal and does not contract or expand like alloy.
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
- To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
- To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
- To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
- To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

- ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
- ND 1.8 (exposure adjustment = approx. 6 stops, transmits 1% of light,)
- ND 3.0 (exposure adjustment = 10 stops, transmits 0.1% of light)
- ND 4.0 (exposure adjustment = 13-2/3 stops, transmits 0.01% of light)
- ND 6.0 = (exposure adjustment = approx. 20 stops)

This is a good basic 3-stop neutral density filter which will allow you to increase your shutter speed and/or use a larger aperture without overexposing. Having compared shots with and without the filter (adjusting shutter speed and aperture accordingly), I can say that the filter really is neutral--it doesn't change the colors at all--and really does decrease the light by the amount it says it does. It has a nice heft to it, though I suppose some people might prefer a lighter filter with aluminum rather than brass.
