A B&W 77mm #103 Neutral Density 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.
Neutral Density filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2, 3, or 4 stops to suit individual situations.
Neutral Density filters permit you to create unique effects. When using high speed film in bright light, an ND filter will allow you to blur motion such as speeding cars or moving water. This permits adjustments in aperture and exposure that would normally not be possible without the filter.
Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.
The reputation of B+W's Schott glass is world renowned. The high production standards combined with a sturdy brass filter ring make B+W filters hard to beat. These filters have a "heft" to them that is impressive. They may feel heavier but the benefit is in the construction and results. Not only is the glass exceptional but so is the seal between the ring and glass. Schott Glass used in the manufacture of this filter is legendary and synonymous with the highest standards of filter production. It comes with a solid 10-year warranty.
The filter ring is made from brass yielding a stronger product. Brass filter rings are also less prone to jamming. In addition, the seal between the glass and filter ring is exceptionally strong giving the filter added strength and durability.
In production, the filter glass is dropped into the empty filter ring from the rear and held in place with a threaded retaining ring; this is a definite advantage over a competitor who uses a spring clip to hold the glass in place. A threaded retaining ring will hold the glass firmly and securely in place to avoid the possibility of rattling and provide perfect parallelity and flatness to your front lens element for ideal optics. The part about additional filters not binding is due to the fact that brass is a very stable metal and does not contract or expand like alloy.

Comments about B+W 77mm #103 Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter:
Been using this for over a month now on a lot of portrait sessions. I use it to obtain a larger f-stop to keep my x-sync low enough to shoot f/2 even with flash outdoors. No tint, nothing, just awesome.
I dropped this on to concrete from 4 feet up, landed right on the edge of the ring, not a dent or anything. This is high quality, so glad I bought it.

Comments about B+W 77mm #103 Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter:
I bought this filter and a 6 Stop B&W nd filter as well for automotive rigshots. I have been very impressed thus far with the amount of light they are able to block. On the super wide end (18mm or so) on a FF camera you get a slight vignette. This is easily corrected in photoshop or by zooming slightly so that the Filter isnt "in view" of the lens.

Comments about B+W 77mm #103 Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter:
I was thinking about buying the very expensive variable ND filter, another brand. But I think this filter will be just what I need. And, if I need a little more ND, I'll just slap my circular polarizer in front of it to have a factor of approx 5.

Great for allowing me to use a lower f-stop at a fixed shutter speed. Note it will emphasize vignetting on wide-angle shots.

Comments about B+W 77mm #103 Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter:
I use this filter when I want to slow my shutter speed to get flowing water to have that silky feel. It's also helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. If my polarizer filter isn't dark enough (1.5-2 stops) I'll switch to this, which is a 3 stop filter. If I need a darker filter, I'll certainly look at B+W again. The optics appear good to me as I haven't seen any color shift etc.

I bought this to replace a lower-end filter, I greatly prefer this one. The other caused somewhat softer images, bit the case with this B+W filter.
