Recently installed a FW800 daisy chain which included one drive to warehouse all of my photos, two more drives in rotation for TimeMachine back-ups, and a compact flash card reader. While one drive is backing up my main hard drive and the photo hard drive, the other in my fire safe. Then, after a week or so, the back-up drives swap places. All three drives worked perfectly straight out of the box and with no hassle. Didn't need or use the included SmartWare and it didn't get in the way. Plug & Play... What can you say that's better than that.

Dear review readers, I'm not a negative, whiny person but I'm going to tell you that while this device is well-designed and definitely appeals to us MAC users, it is a gamble as to whether or not it will be a dependable machine for you. It failed on my first day when I tried to format the disc. I've heard of people having better luck with HDs when formatted/erased before using the factory formatted space. I tried this and never got past the first task I gave it. I love the design but it's just a shame Hitachi doesn't make one that looks like this! I'll trade the dependability for the design any day.

I bought this for video editing with Final Cut Pro 7 and the very first time I plugged it in to my iMac it worked flawlessly. No formatting required for Mac! I had been used to usb 2.0 so now with the firewire 800 my rendering is much faster. It also color matches perfectly with the iMac which is icing on the cake.
I've only had it for a couple weeks but I already ordered another one in 2TB Raid format. The 1TB with then serve as my 3rd back-up and time machine. I definitely recommend it for anyone who needs speed in their hard drive.

Bought this for my 27in iMac as a backup for Time Machine. Did not have to do a thing. Plugged it in and when Time Machine opened, I chose this drive for my backup. Simple as that! All cables were included.

Comments about Western Digital My Book Studio External Hard Drive (1TB):
Purchased this drive to use with my older Macbook, because the the description stated that it was USB and Firewire 800 (which would work with my new macbook) with adapter for Firewire 400 (for use with my old Macbook which only has Firewire 400). When it arrived, it did NOT have the 400 to 800 adapter. I contacted WD support at the e-mail address that was in the paperwork that came with the drive, and within a week, WD had sent the firewire 400 to 800 adapter.
Drive works out of the box as expected. I did reformat (partition) the drive and it is working well, works great with Time Machine backup. The drive is very quite. I have only had it for 2 weeks, so have no opinion about long-term use. However, this is my second WD 1TB drive, I have a similar model WD drive on my home network that I've had running for over a year. Pleased with that one, so feel comfortable with this purchase for the long haul.
While it has no power switch, it does "shut down" when dismounted and data cable is unplugged. Does go to standby when idle as well to save power.

Comes with 3 cables to choose from depending on what you need for your computer. I plugged it into a MacPro and it started up and "knew" what to do right away. It allows the user to choose how you want to do your backups. Using the firewire 800 cable it worked fast enough for me.

I'm using this external drive for backing up dslr photos and videos.
Set up for Mac is extremely simple.
The only trouble I had was thinking that I needed to use their software program. I opted to just drag and drop selected files.

I wanted an external drive that had good reviews (obviously) and would look good with my new 27" iMac, its keyboard and track pad. After spending a couple days researching I decided to get the Western Digital 1 TB My Book Studio. When I got it, I was impressed by its size and its design wonderfully compliments my computer. I also liked the fact that it has 2 Firewire 800 ports and a USB port. Nicely priced too. I plugged it in, opened Time Machine, selected it as my backup disc, and was done. It is a beautifully simple machine.

I use this product to backup my data on my MacBookPro. I bought it so I would have a reliable backup before upgrading to Lion. It is fast and doesn't take up a lot room. It does the job at a great price.

It's a nice looking and smart design, just the software isn't where it should be.
The Macbook Pro superdrive does not work with blank cds/dvds if the My Book software is installed on the laptop. The only way around this is deleting a certain file and that disables the software. If you do not want to use the software (continuous backup) that WD provides then this external is fine.
After calling WD customer service, they do not know how to solve this problem.
