Finding a compatible external hard drive for mac machines is not an easy task, as many storage manufacturers design external hard drives keeping in mind windows compatibility. This is what exactly happened when I tried to buy an external hard drive for my macbook. After extensive research I came across the Iomega mac companion hard drive with 3TB storage capacity. I jumped at the offer and now the mac companion decorates my desk. The trapezoidal design is attractive and suits my iMac. The high speed transfer of the USB interface is appealing.
Moreover there is an USB hub that allows me to charge my iPod and iPhone. If you want to charge an iPad see to that your drive is disconnected from Mac and connected via FireWire 800. If you want to use USB put your iPad in sleep mode.

I have only had this for a few weeks, but it appears to be working fine with my iMac and I like the 3GB capacity. I found that transferring large amounts of data (200GB) to be much slow than expected, but that may be because I am forced to use USB, which leads to my other complaint. You cannot connect via firewire and still use the USB ports on the drive. I was hoping to be able to connect firewire for communication with the drive and then connect another USB cable so that I use it as a USB. Both cables cannot be connected simultaneously. The only way to use the USB hub is to connect the drive to the Mac via USB.

Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
Nice design, fits at the base of my Mac machine just fine, the drive is Mac compatible and Time Machine compatible as well. I also did not have any issue in partitioning the drive as I like to keep my backup organized.
The Mac companion hard drive does not make any noise. Backup is also simple and does not require any special software. I have worked with other external hard drives and had noticed that this drive is a desktop drive with less expensive drive mechanism. I am also planning to get another Mac companion for streaming movies at home.

I bought this 3 TB Mac Companion to store all of my pictures on. I love that it came already formatted for a Mac.
Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
Small, lightweight, quiet, loaded with features, big storage space is what the Mac Companion hard drive is all about. The device is bus powered and hence no hassle of power plugs. I was able to backup all my Macbook content faster than anticipated. Thought I had a lot of photos and videos, file transfer was quick. With 3TB of storage capacity I need not worry about buying another storage device in the near future.
It is a true beauty and the moment I saw the drive I wanted to own this device and till date I have no regrets. There is a 2.1 Amp USB port that helps me charge my iPod.
Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
The big Mac companion hard drive works out of the box and there is no need to install any software or configure the device. I just connected the external drive to my iMac and started the backup process. Transfer speed is great and nothing to complain about. Thunderbolt would have been better when it comes to speed but I am happy with what I got.
The Mac companion not just provides USB interface but firewire as well both 400 and 800. The USB is helpful in connecting to iPhone where I can not only charge but sync as well. With the help of a small app I was able to check the storage of my mac companion using the three LED lights on the front panel.
Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
Enriched with features the jazzy Mac companion is true to its name as it complements my Mac monitor. What makes the device a Mac companion is because it comes with HFS+, meaning I can directly connect to my Mac machine and start transferring files. I was glad that the external drive came with 2.1 Amp USB port that allows me to charge my iPod conveniently. There is also a capacity gauge on the front panel that indicates the storage availability on the Mac companion. Go for it guys it's a good buy.

Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
I copied over some data 500MB from another hard drive. Drive was fast to write but suddenly stopped. Had to reboot in order to see the data again. Not sure how compatible this drive is with MacOSX 10.7.3 (Lion). Drive may perform better is an ealier operating system like Snow Leonard.
Had to return drive due to incompatibility.
Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
With lesser priced alternatives available in the market as far as external hard drives are concerned my interest was only on Iomega mac companion. I was floored by its looks and functions. The device comes with a big storage capacity of 3TB and is ample for my storage needs. Iomega offers downloadable protection software suite for free that helps in taking quick backups. The device is rightly called mac companion because it comes formatted for Macs. PC users need not worry as it is compatible with PC as well on reformatting. The 2x FireWire 800 ports and 3x USB 2.0 ports throws open interface options.
I use the USB to sync my iPhone and it works fine. The transfer speed is fast when compared to other external hard drives I have used earlier.
Comments about Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive:
Finding a suitable external hard drive for my mac machine was a tough job, though many brands sell mac compatible drives most of them do not have firewire compatibility. Ultimately I found an allrounder in Iomega mac companion. I would like to call it an allrounder because it not just comes with a big 3TB storage space but with other mac favorable features as well. First among them is that the mac companion was designed to complement a mac machine. The device is preformatted in HFS+ and hence connecting to my machine was simple.
The device comes with two firewire 800 ports and two USB 2.0 built-in hub giving me great connectivity choice. This is not all there was another USB 2.1 amps port on the side, meant exclusively for charging.

There is no doubt that Iomega Mac companion is meant to target Mac owners. Being a Mac owner I found it blend with my MacBook. This is a solid device and not just a flashy one. The FireWire and USB interface has made this device the most sought after. I use this device to take backup of all my important files on my MacBook and it works absolutely fine.
I also use Mac Companion to charge and sync my iPod and iPhone. The black metal look gives the drive a solid feel. The LED light shows you how full the storage device is. If you aren't using Time Machine backup try the QuickProtect software for backup.

There is no denying the fact that Apple has a bandwagon of loyalists and finding products that suit Apple machines was always tough. But this thought changed when I saw Iomega 3TB Mac Companion Hard Drive. It sits perfectly fine on my Apple machine. The 7200 rpm speed helps transfer my digital files in a jiffy. This is not all the device comes with a USB ports and FireWire ports as well. Which means there is absolutely no connectivity issues, except that there is no Thunderbolt connectivity.
None the less I am still happy with my Mac companion as it comes with a huge 3TB capacity.
