The LaCie Rugged Mini Portable Hard Drive provides 500GB (7200rpm) of space for storing your data. In addition, the drive, as its name suggests, has a hard-boiled design that can stand up to the hazards of daily living. In fact, this drive can take a fall from up to 47.2" (non-operating mode) without harm to the drive or your information. The Rugged Mini is also pressure-resistant and rain-resistant as well. However, the familiar orange trim probably already told you that.
Being tough is one thing, but the Rugged Mini is also a true performer. The drive features a USB 3.0 interface - which is also USB 2.0 compliant - and a transfer rate of up to 5GB/s. When it comes to RPMs, the drive functions at 7200 rotations per minute. Beyond speed, the Rugged Mini has security on its agenda. The LaCie Private-Public software that comes built-into the drive ensures that you can keep private files private with the help of a password protected section of the drive. Additional features like Automatic Backup and 10GB of free storage on Wuala's Online Storage also give you peace-of-mind when it comes to your data.

Comments about LaCie Rugged Mini Portable Hard Drive (500GB (7200rpm)):
I am a photography student at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. I use this hard drive as extra storage and was required to get an external for class. I like the drive and once plugged in it works quite quickly, although sometimes it takes a few seconds to start copying large amounts of data. Once going though it goes quite quickly. I like to get things that are tough or water proof/resistant and this fits both categories, although I haven't actually tested it out, I like the extra assurance. It's definitely not flimsy and feels like it could stand a 4 1/2 foot drop. Although make sure it isn't on, as specified. The rubber protects from dropping but also keeps it from sliding around the table. I also like it's small size. I'm giving it four stars instead of five because I'm not sure it was completely fantastic, although to be certain I'm not sure what any portable hard drive could do to attain such a level.

Am taking a course in Photoshop, Apple in the lab, PC at home. Most I asked was transportability. Be sure to format in an apple machine, as I did, then both platforms recognize each others files.

Did not work with my computer but if you do not have Lion i would buy this. Design is sleek and it is protected by rubber that surrounds the outside of the body.

Comments about LaCie Rugged Mini Portable Hard Drive (500GB (7200rpm)):
Manual configuration required if you have OS X Lion as Lacie's configuration software does not work with the new OS. Otherwise, a fast and rugged drive. A bit on the pricey side.
