it is basically an external hard drive with a remote thats cool. but i was disapointed when it need a firmware update right out of the box. and even more disapointed when i found out i could not play back may digital copy movies (wmv files generated with windows 7).IOMEGA tech help said i need to call micro soft due to codec or drm issues. the whole reason i purchased this product was to from a digital libary for my home entaintment center with out the need for a pc connection.beaware this product will not perform that task.

When it comes to entertainment there should be no stumbling blocks. Whenever I miss my favorite television shows I used to download them and watch at my convenience. But I used to find it a bit inconvenient as I have to watch in on my laptop which has just a 17" screen. So when I heard of Iomega screenplay mx2 HD media player I jumped at it.
The only reason being, now I can download straight onto my media player and watch it on my big screen in high definition. The sound quality also is great and now I need not worry on missing my favorite shows. This is not all now I can view all my photos on my big screen using the mx2 media player. If you want to experience crystal clear images then go for it now!

Small can be big at times. This is what I experienced with Iomega 1TB ScreenPlay MX2 HD Media player. When I opened the pack I wondered if such a small device could play so many formats and full HD video playback. Well I was surprised as the MX2 was an absolute marvel. Weighing just 1 kg it is one of the lightest media players I have ever used. The setup was simple and it was ready to play as soon I plugged the device to the power. The remote was also interactive. There was absolutely no stutter or lag when I tried to play on my full HD TV.
The MX2 media player comfortably played AVI, MKV, DiVx, FLV, IFO, AVS and many more. The USB port helps me connect to external drive where I have stored a few media files.

We bought the Screenplay so we could play videos on our HD monitors when exhibiting at tradeshows. Playing video files from a hard drive, through a HDMI connection on a TV. Seems pretty simple huh?
Not so much for this device, The first issue is the incredibly inconvenient user-interface. We have had to write out a half-page instruction sheet to send with the device so that our salesman can play one video file. For example (and this is a quote from the instruction sheet I wrote out, for the ScreenPlay Plus)
"Step 4. Press POWER button on back of the Hard Drive Media Player. This will turn on the "hard drive" portion of the Hard Drive Media Player. You will get a solid blue light on the front. Step 5. Press power button on remote. This will turn on the "media player" portion of the Hard Drive Media Player. You will get a flashing blue light on the front."
There are two steps to turning on the device! That is clue about the way Iomega approaches usability.
Even though the specifications state that the player should be able to play a number of different files, I have found that the even if the codec and file format are compatible with the player, the device often does not play certain files at all or is very unstable with other file types. I am a video professional and I end up doing a number of different conversion before I find one that works.
Also the device overheats often. And now we are having trouble with the devices freezing up and having to be restarted every thirty minutes or so.
Another design flaw, if you loose the remote or if it is damaged, there is absolutely no way to work the device.
I have Iomega external hard drives, a Screenplay Director, and Screenplay plus and I am finished buying things from this company. Haven't been satisfied yet.
