The Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera is a slender 12.1Mp point-and-shoot that goes beyond the genre's suggested capabilities. Of course, you can just point the 510 at your subject and click for a great photo, but Canon gave this Powershot multiple other functions to explore for expressing your creativity and enjoying the fruits of your shooting.
When it comes to the various shooting modes and special scene modes you'll have numerous options for putting your mark on each image you take. Portrait helps to create an artistic feel so your subject pops. Toy Camera Effect makes your images look like they were taken with a pinhole camera, creating a vignetting effect. Another example is the Super Vivid mode for highly saturated scenes with ultra-bright colors.
When it comes to utilizing the Intelligent IS mode you have six different versions to choose from. Normal, Panning, Hybrid, Dynamic, Powered, and Tripod each give you the right level of image stabilization for your specific situation, resulting in the steadiest image possible. Functions such as Face Detection and Smart Shutter also help to take the guess work out of shooting for well exposed faces and for fun and creative filters to add to your shots.
The camera's 1080p HD video capture function is a multifaceted feature. With the CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor working together to capture high res footage that will look great on even the biggest HDTV, you'll have movies you'll be proud to show the entire family. And while shooting, the dedicated Movie Button starts and stops recording with just a touch - with no need to navigate through a menu or dial.
The ELPH 510 also supports iFrame, Apple's video format that boasts native support for both Mac and Windows video applications. This translates into no converting of video after you've shot. One more video feature is Canon's Movie Digest. This feature combines an entire day's worth of short clips into one video automatically, and there's no post-production editing to be done. All you have to do is enjoy the memories.
When it comes to physical attributes, the 510 HS features a 3.2" PureColor touch screen LCD system. You'll see beautiful, rich color on the screen and enjoy the ease of touch screen navigation. The LCD also boasts a Touch Shutter function which allows you to release the shutter just by touching the screen. The lens on the 510 is a Genuine Canon 12x Zoom Lens. That's 12x optical zoom and a 28-336mm (35mm equivalent) wide-telephoto range. You'll be able to shoot groups, landscapes, and everything in between with ease.

Smart AUTO: The camera automatically selects the best shooting settings for optimal quality based on subjects and environmental factors to provide point-and-shoot simplicityProgram: Access advanced exposure compensation features while shooting mostly automaticallyMovie Digest: Records a video clip before capturing a still image and then combines one day's worth of clips into a videoPortrait: The camera sets a large aperture, focusing the subject and artistically blurring the background to make your subject "pop"Kids & Pets: Reduced focusing time freezes fast-moving subjects, so you won't miss those special shotsSmart Shutter: The camera automatically takes the photo when people smile, wink, or get into frameHigh-Speed Burst: The camera shoots continuously at a high speed while you hold down the shutterBest Image Selection: The camera takes five photos in succession, and then chooses the best one out of the bunchHandheld Night Scene: Suppresses image blur even without the help of a tripodLow Light: For high quality image capture in an amazing range of dimly-lit situationsFisheye Effect: Add a classic photo distortion without a fisheye lensMiniature Effect for Movies & Stills: Emphasizes perspectives for a miniature effect by blurring upper and bottom portions of the imageToy Camera Effect: Simulates photos taken with "toy" or pinhole cameras, darkening the image at the edges to create a vignette effectMonochrome: Choose from three single-tone effects: Black-and-White, Sepia, or BlueSuper Vivid: Super Vivid intensifies existing hues, saturating the scene with bright colorsPoster Effect: Poster Effect combines several similar shades into one color, turning subtle gradations into eye-catching, scene-popping contrastsColor Accent: Choose to retain a single color in your image while other colors turn monochromeColor Swap: Select a color and replace it with a color you specify for special effectsBeach: Get clear shots of people at a sunny beach without darkened facesFoliage: Capture brilliant shots of autumn foliage, greenery and blossomsSnow: Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects or an unnatural bluish tintFireworks: Grab brilliant images of skyrocketing fireworksLong Shutter: Use to blur moving subjects for artistic effect, ideal for urban night photographyiFrame Movie: The Apple movie format, iFrame makes it easier and quicker to import and upload videos while retaining high image qualitySuper Slow Motion Movie: Record your clips in high speed (approximately 240 fps), and then watch your videos in slow motion
How does this work? When you activate Movie Digest, the camera continuously records a "loop" of video up to 4 seconds long into an area of the memory card reserved for this feature. Every time you take a photo, the video clip residing in memory at that time is appended to a file that will eventually become the day's highlights video. The following day, the camera will start a new video file. Movie Digest does not affect regular video shooting, so you can use it and still switch between still and video capture as desired.
Although the beauty of Movie Digest is the ease with which you can create a video of the day, you can, if you wish, edit the created videos on your computer. Version 6.8 or later of the included ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Mac OS) software lets you freely select and delete unwanted scenes from your Movie Digest videos

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Silver):
I like to use a point & shoot camera for hiking, skiing & other activities when I don't like to carry my Canon T2i. My first digital camera was something other than a Canon, & I won't make that mistake again.
This camera is awesome. I spent a few minutes looking around to find out where to find the settings & that was all it took. It's very user friendly & works remarkably well in different light conditions. I also like the slim body which allows me to to carry the camera easily, even in a hard shell case. Having HD video capability will add a new twist to my shooting experiences. I have no complaints with the ELPH 510 at all.

Beware using the ImageBrowser software that comes with the camera with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. Not only does it not work with Lion, it replaces whatever other version of ImageBrowser was installed. Canon says this problem will be resolved sometime after the first of the year.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife, who wants a small point-and-shot she can take anywhere and which is easy to operate but flexible. The 12X telephoto and image stabilization appealed to me as did the easy video capability as I am sure she will appreciate the ability of taking videos of our new granddaughter.
