The Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera is a slender 12.1Mp point-and-shoot that goes beyond the genre's suggested capabilities. Of course, you can just point the 510 at your subject and click for a great photo, but Canon gave this Powershot multiple other functions to explore for expressing your creativity and enjoying the fruits of your shooting.
When it comes to the various shooting modes and special scene modes you'll have numerous options for putting your mark on each image you take. Portrait helps to create an artistic feel so your subject pops. Toy Camera Effect makes your images look like they were taken with a pinhole camera, creating a vignetting effect. Another example is the Super Vivid mode for highly saturated scenes with ultra-bright colors.
When it comes to utilizing the Intelligent IS mode you have six different versions to choose from. Normal, Panning, Hybrid, Dynamic, Powered, and Tripod each give you the right level of image stabilization for your specific situation, resulting in the steadiest image possible. Functions such as Face Detection and Smart Shutter also help to take the guess work out of shooting for well exposed faces and for fun and creative filters to add to your shots.
The camera's 1080p HD video capture function is a multifaceted feature. With the CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor working together to capture high res footage that will look great on even the biggest HDTV, you'll have movies you'll be proud to show the entire family. And while shooting, the dedicated Movie Button starts and stops recording with just a touch - with no need to navigate through a menu or dial.
The ELPH 510 also supports iFrame, Apple's video format that boasts native support for both Mac and Windows video applications. This translates into no converting of video after you've shot. One more video feature is Canon's Movie Digest. This feature combines an entire day's worth of short clips into one video automatically, and there's no post-production editing to be done. All you have to do is enjoy the memories.
When it comes to physical attributes, the 510 HS features a 3.2" PureColor touch screen LCD system. You'll see beautiful, rich color on the screen and enjoy the ease of touch screen navigation. The LCD also boasts a Touch Shutter function which allows you to release the shutter just by touching the screen. The lens on the 510 is a Genuine Canon 12x Zoom Lens. That's 12x optical zoom and a 28-336mm (35mm equivalent) wide-telephoto range. You'll be able to shoot groups, landscapes, and everything in between with ease.

Smart AUTO: The camera automatically selects the best shooting settings for optimal quality based on subjects and environmental factors to provide point-and-shoot simplicityProgram: Access advanced exposure compensation features while shooting mostly automaticallyMovie Digest: Records a video clip before capturing a still image and then combines one day's worth of clips into a videoPortrait: The camera sets a large aperture, focusing the subject and artistically blurring the background to make your subject "pop"Kids & Pets: Reduced focusing time freezes fast-moving subjects, so you won't miss those special shotsSmart Shutter: The camera automatically takes the photo when people smile, wink, or get into frameHigh-Speed Burst: The camera shoots continuously at a high speed while you hold down the shutterBest Image Selection: The camera takes five photos in succession, and then chooses the best one out of the bunchHandheld Night Scene: Suppresses image blur even without the help of a tripodLow Light: For high quality image capture in an amazing range of dimly-lit situationsFisheye Effect: Add a classic photo distortion without a fisheye lensMiniature Effect for Movies & Stills: Emphasizes perspectives for a miniature effect by blurring upper and bottom portions of the imageToy Camera Effect: Simulates photos taken with "toy" or pinhole cameras, darkening the image at the edges to create a vignette effectMonochrome: Choose from three single-tone effects: Black-and-White, Sepia, or BlueSuper Vivid: Super Vivid intensifies existing hues, saturating the scene with bright colorsPoster Effect: Poster Effect combines several similar shades into one color, turning subtle gradations into eye-catching, scene-popping contrastsColor Accent: Choose to retain a single color in your image while other colors turn monochromeColor Swap: Select a color and replace it with a color you specify for special effectsBeach: Get clear shots of people at a sunny beach without darkened facesFoliage: Capture brilliant shots of autumn foliage, greenery and blossomsSnow: Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects or an unnatural bluish tintFireworks: Grab brilliant images of skyrocketing fireworksLong Shutter: Use to blur moving subjects for artistic effect, ideal for urban night photographyiFrame Movie: The Apple movie format, iFrame makes it easier and quicker to import and upload videos while retaining high image qualitySuper Slow Motion Movie: Record your clips in high speed (approximately 240 fps), and then watch your videos in slow motion
How does this work? When you activate Movie Digest, the camera continuously records a "loop" of video up to 4 seconds long into an area of the memory card reserved for this feature. Every time you take a photo, the video clip residing in memory at that time is appended to a file that will eventually become the day's highlights video. The following day, the camera will start a new video file. Movie Digest does not affect regular video shooting, so you can use it and still switch between still and video capture as desired.
Although the beauty of Movie Digest is the ease with which you can create a video of the day, you can, if you wish, edit the created videos on your computer. Version 6.8 or later of the included ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Mac OS) software lets you freely select and delete unwanted scenes from your Movie Digest videos

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I upgraded to this camera from a Powershot SD960IS for the zoom. I also used a SD1100IS for years, both excellent snapshot cameras.
I was always impressed with the photos I got from the 960, but the SX260HS just takes better photos and in a broader range of conditions. Audio recording and video is much improved too. If you know your way around Cannon's menu, this camera is a breeze to set up an operate. The 960 is a wide scree 16:9 format and at first I was disappointed at the 260 4:3 format until I realized both cameras have the same 16:9 resolution, the 260 just adds more image capture area.
I've taken about 500 photos and 60 minutes of video at the highest quality settings and in environments that range from live concerts to sunny landscapes and this camera is an improvement in image quality, speed, performance. I rarely use the flash. The zoom works very well, but a snapshot camera is a bit more difficult to hold steady. It could use a remote fire mechanism.
There are a number of features, like blink detectors and face recognition and instead of a straight time delay, will detect an individual entering a frame. The GPS works well. These feature are gimmicks to me at the moment, but in time I'll probably wonder how I lived all these years without.
I bought extra battery and SD card, but have yet to need them.

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I brought the camera to Disney World for a family vacation, its taken some amazing pictures and video. I bought 3 - 32 Gig cards and two extra batteries. I still haven't filled the first card, the batteries were a good idea that I would recommend. I work as a professional cameraman and am used to a much larger video camera. Its so small that its hard for me to hold it steady when shooting video, but that's operator error. for this amount of money I think its amazing!

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera to take to Disney World with my family so I didn't have to carry around my DSLR. I performed very well in just about every scenario. I took around 650 photo's and they came out great. The only times photo's were below par was indoors in badly lit areas. The camera took great outdoor night photo's however. Touch screen works well but for Iphone / Ipad users it takes a while to get used to the fact that you need to apply much more pressure to the screen than you are used to. Camera feel is good in your hand. A sure fit with a little weight which I prefer. I hope this review is helpful.

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I have several DSLR cameras, so I purchased this as a day-to-day camera. I can easily carry it around in my pocket to ensure I always have a camera with me to capture a moment and to take with me to sporting events that frown on professional looking equipment. I selected this over other models due to the zoom and ability in low light, and have not been disappointed with the picture quality.
My only complaint is that the battery life is really short. If you go on vacation with the camera, you will need to charge it daily or buy additional batteries.

Very handy when out on walks and I do not want to lug around my 8 lbs DSLR.
Very powerful zoom (12X) in a small package.
So far all is good.

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera for my fiance as an upgrade from our previous Canon phone. The touch screen is slick and leaves more room for the screen as there are not buttons on the side.
The best part about the camera is the small design combined with a 12x optical zoom lens. From the small amount of use that it has been put through, the quality and optical zoom is fantastic for such a slim camera.
I will know more after considerably more use, but from a first pass, this looks to be a winner.

Glad that I bought this camera. The 12x optical zoom in both photos and video is working really well. The zoom is a little slow when recording, but it gives a better effect when watching afterwards.
The touch shutter function is also a useful function.
The best thing is the night function where the camera takes several pictures and mixing them. The result is amazing. It gives clear pictures, even with almost no light.

Comments about Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I use the product for outdoor photography.
I like how compact it is. It makes nice images. Long tele range.
Two things not so great. It only makes JPGs not RAW files and I am not so fond of live viewfinder. I prefer the plain ole viewfinders that let me put the camera up to my eye. Still a good camera in all.
