The BDR-206DBK 12x Internal Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Writer from Pioneer is an internal SATA Blu-ray burner. The drive installs in a standard 5.25" expansion bay, and is an excellent option for anyone who would like to add Blu-ray read and write capabilities to their computer system.
This burner can read and write a number of different Blu-ray, DVD, and CD formats. While this optical drive is plug-and-play and does not require installation software, you will need to purchase and install separate software for burning discs.*
Note! You might need separate software for reading and playing discs; however, your operating system most likely includes a program.

I bought this to add to my existing HP desktop PC which already has a DVD burner. However, since the drive did not come with the cables necessary to hook it up, I ended up using the cables from the DVD writer that was already installed.
The drive itself was extremely easy to install and works great with CD's, DVD's and BD's, I just wish they had told me that I would need to purchase the cables separately, or at least have the cables listed as an accessory option on the page with the other items.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and I've used this drive so far to burn CDs and double-layer DVDs. I've also used it to play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays without any problems. The drive has performed as advertised for all of those tasks.
The one quirk I referred to is that when I start my computer with a Blu-Ray disc already in the drive, the drive does not show up as a device anywhere on the system. Rebooting with a CD, DVD, or no disc in the drive corrects the issue. The latest firmware on Pioneer's website is older than the preinstalled firmware, so I don't know if a fix is in the works.
The drive functions fine. As long as I don't boot up with a Blu-Ray in the drive, everything works great.

2009 and 2010 Mac Pro models use SATA Optical Drives. For those, this drive will work right out of the box. For 2008 or older Mac Pro models (3,1; 2,1 or 1,1) which use ATAPI Optical Drives, you need special cables to attach to the logic board's SATA connector and to convert the power connector from ATAPI to SATA.

I installed this drive in my Dell desktop for backing up media and writing various home movies. I also use it to back up data to disks. It is very fast and quiet. Very easy to setup also, basically plug and play. So far, very satisfied with this purchase.

Installed great on older Tyan K8SE workstation board.
Burned over 20 BD-R's on Memorex blank media without any problems using Nero Burning Rom 9.
Plays BluRay movies just fine with PowerDVD.
Drive came shipped in a OEM box, nice addition considering most OEM drives just come shipped in a plastic bag.

I bought this drive for my 8 core MacPro and it didn't work straight out of the box. After researching a bunch of user groups, I found that the only way this will work with a Mac, is if I bought an external 5.25" enclosure (eSata/USB). Buy the external enclosure for an extra $50 at the same time as this "internal" drive, and you'll save yourself a ton of headaches!
