I'm a professional photographer who has a large collection of Canon DSLR's and lenses. I use these for work assignments and for my personal work. I've been looking for a compact camera to shoot photos around town and during vacations. After trying small point and shoot cameras (leaving me unsatisfied) it seemed as if I found what I need in the Olympus EP-L2. With three zoom lens, I have the range I need, from wide to telephoto. The art filters along with the 1:1 aspect ratio (love the square format), and the black frame are my main shooting set-up. However, I am very please with the boost in resolution and other features with the Nex7. Right now I just have the 18-55 lens. I'm happy with the sharpness so far. I like to read camera reviews and do pay attention to the critical, lab test in them. I am influenced on my purchases by the results of these tests. My own real world photos are most important to me, and so far the Nex7 is performing quite well. I have liked using the HDR mode, and with some experimentation have liked the results. I shoot a lot a panoramic photos, mainly using Photoshop to merge my individual photos. The sweep panoramic feature of the Nex 7 has been impressive. Recently I shot a group photo of 400 people on the steps of the Illinois state capitol building using the sweep pano setting with the camera on a tripod. Before the people showed up I practiced alot to get the start and end positions correct. I was interested in the resolution, sharpness, and how the camera merged the straight lines of the capitol together. I produced an excellent 24" print of this image. I will be using the Nex7 more often for work in addition to my own personal work.

I purchased the NEX 7 as an alternative to my 5Dmk2 Canon system for those times when I have to hike long and difficult terrain or I am in an urban situation where I do not wish to "advertise" my gear and still have good hi res files to work with.
In that regard the 7 delivers. Very small and compact, but feels good and is easy to operate even in my large hands. Build quality is very good - excellent.
I also purchased the 55-210 zoom so the kit 18-55 and this give a great spread. However, my walk around for the 5Dmk2 has always been the 24-105 so I am used to getting by with one lens. This two lens approach is a real compromise. I may have to consider the 18-200. Neither of the two lenses I have do the sensor justice. I am used to L glass and these have no pretense to that level of quality. Sony needs to get their act together to make the NEX package a real winner in that regard.
As others have noted, the menu system is deep and somewhat complex. There are "info" windows that pop up every where you go. After the second or third time they get VERY annoying. I did finally stumble onto the setting that turns them off.
In continuous mode the frame rate is rather astonishing and there is no meaningful shutter lag. There are several focusing modes and the auto focus is quite fast.
The biggest disappointment for me is the astonishing lack of useful auto bracketing in RAW. The 7 is presently limited to a preset of .3 or .7 EV in a three shot bracket. REALLY? Makes you wonder if the design team ever talked to a knowledgeable experienced photographer.
I have bracketed 90% of my shooting for years now, (-2, +2) allowing the option for post HDR processing. This is impossible on the NEX 7 except in the manual mode. The likely hood of adjusting the super light 7 for 3, 5, or 7 shots with out disturbing the camera, even on a tripod is a real gamble.
Of course, the 7 brags about its built in HDR. In fairness, it works rather well if your only interest is salvaging details in bright scenes. It fires off three shots so fast there is hardly time for camera movement to become problematic, and you get the 0 EV shot as well as the combined image. If you are happy working with JPG and don't want to do the post HDR yourself, great.
I think the pro and pro - enthusiast demographic this camera appeals to will not be happy with the lack of (real) RAW bracketing, and the huge choices available for in camera "creative" effects are pretty much wasted on those shooters as well.
This particular shortfall is nothing more than an easy change in firmware and I wish upon a star that Sony will smile upon us and release an improved firmware sooner than later. Oh yeah.... and provide some "L" grade zoom lenses for this little beauty too.

I love this camera. I sold my Nikon D7000 as I wait for my D4 & I wanted a system that didn't weigh much. To my surprise, I have a blast with the NEX7. The kit 18-55 lens produces sharp images with decent tonality. The Zeiss 16-80 produces very sharp images with outstanding color, tonal seperation & marvelous contrast. I actually love the tiltable LCD which allows me to get some creative shots without straining my neck or laying down on a sidewalk. What a joy to use.
Drawbacks: Lightroom 3 does not pick up all the nice picture types -- a drag. The video button ALWAYS gets pressed accidentily which drains battery life. 24 MP is beautiful but the images are noisy including & above 800 ISO. But noise reduction in Lightroom takes care of it well. The lens selection is too slim, lens quality on the
cheap side for the E-mounts & there is only 1 Zeiss lens optimized for the APC-S sensor. A camera of this quality deserves a well-priced & well thought out selection of Zeiss lens optimized for the APC-S sensor. The camera is that good. If I carry any weight, it will only be for a solid full-frame only. Why bother otherwise.
The NEX7 is so fun to use & a breath of fresh air. Oh, the adaptor makes the camera even better with comfort & AF efficiency. But more high-quality -- weather-sealed -- lenses are well deserved SONY.

I am a semi-pro photographer with experience in LF, MF film, and numerous DSLRs. I still own a Noblex 150 UX.
I simply think this is the most amazing travel camera, ever. Maybe my perspective comes from being liberated from carrying some 40+ lbs. of stuff through airports, but I really feel after shooting with this thing for two weeks, that it is one of the most amazing pieces of tech I have ever used.
There are a few nit-picky details, like I would like to be able to better control the panorama mode. But the pans are really great, and the flip viewscreen enables candid shots of folks like never before.
I'm not a gear-aholic -- I buy stuff because I see a use. But this thing is just incredible, and if you actually do the other MF stuff, this thing is comparable. And so easy. Highly recommended.

I purchased this with 18-55 lens but bought novaflex adapter for my leica 35 mm summilux lens for my M4, and a canon adapter for my old 20 mm f2. Great lens with manual focus restrictions get some getting used to but work fabulously. All the rest of the features are fully functional and the quality of the images are better than my canon 20D and 1DS.

I am an enthusiast photographer who was looking for a powerful camera that can function like a DSLR without having the size and weight of one. So far the A-Nex 7 has blown my expectations out of the water. I primarily use the camera for landscapes, still life, and portraiture. It is excellent at each task. The colors and resolution are phenomenal, the control is excellent (especially the try-navi set up), and it is easy to use. I also really enjoy the size and the grip--just enough to feel firm in your hand, but not so much as to overwhelm you. The kit lens should be better for the price of the package and the potential of the camera, but with other glass it excels.

Use for personal use. Because of large number of mega pixels, can crop without losing the ability to print 8 x 10 photos. Videos are clear. Two negatives, it is easy to hit the video button by mistake. Likewise, it is easy to change the exposure compensation by mistake.

After a numbers of dedicated hours and reading a lot of reviews I decided to purchase SONY NEX-7. I was planning to use this camera as my second camera just for travel and occasionally. But the first pictures which I made by Sony NEX-7 changed my mind...
The picture quality is absolutely extraordinary for so small size camera. I can compare these pictures to the pictures made by my Nikon d7000 with Nikkor 50mm/1.4G (Prime lens) and Olympus E-PL2 with 14-42mm lens.
So far, I am using my NEX-7 with 18-55 mm Kit lens. It works great. I recommend 49mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter also. It is not cheap but it is excellent quality UV protection filter.
There is just one thing that I would like to mention about, - Operation Control is a little bit complicated. I believe it might be just my personal problem but anyway…
I highly recommended this camera for everyone who is looking for small, light camera with tons of functions and superior image quality. No questions, it is excellent product.

Bought the camera for my mom as a surprise. She has been a professional photographer for over 25 years, she loves it...her pro buddies have expressed their jealousy :).This camera is so light and usable. It also has a ton of highly customizable features for the advanced user or tinkerer. The LCD screen is great for pulling the camera out and snapping off quick shots, while the eyepiece/ viewfinder is great for lining up that perfect shot. Even without the hood on, during a sunny day, surrounded by bright concrete and objects the lens flare was minimal and the color contrast still very high. With some of the better lenses offered, this camera can turn anyone into a photojournalism hero. Have not yet had the opportunity to try the A-mount adapter and lenses. The camera has so many features I'm wondering if I can find a class or seminar to help maximize all the futures and thus dollars spent on this incredible piece of hardware. The HD video is very impressive, although the placement of the record button causes inadvertent recording on occasion when trying to take a photo. Hopefully as once you get used to handling the camera regularly this won't happen. Have not been able to get clear action shots with the stock lens that comes with the kit, but I'm sure there is a camera setting/ lens combo which will correct it.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):
I do a lot of product listing shots. For close-ups with a very shallow field of focus, this system absolutely KILLS my DSLR (Canon T2i). Much better "keeper" ratio. (And that's a good thing when you're trying to get 60+ usable shots in a couple of hours.) Manual focusing with my old Nikon prime lenses is fast, easy and ACCURATE. The few ugly surprises I've had were caused by my own lateral movement and that has been reduced by the super-fast shutter response.I'm convinced: for super-critical focus, going manual off the sensor is the best way to go. DSLRs do provide for this with "live view" but IME it's slow & awkward - especially for hand-held shooting. (Not to mention it kind of defeats the whole point of using a SLR.) This EVF with the focus "peaking" and easy-access magnification seems infinitely better. The EVF isn't perfect but I do enjoy using it, even in full sunlight. (It makes the optical viewfinder on the DSLR seem dark and small...)The performance of the sensor is impressive enough for me to let go of my full-frame ambitions (at least for now). Comparing 100% crops , I found I liked the renderings from the NEX-7 better than most full-frames.The compact size to me is mostly a bonus. But what a bonus! This is like having that Leica I always wanted but could never justify! (And I find I am really loving the way it handles...)All this for less than the Canon 5D Mark ii I was looking at, and I get to go ahead and reuse the old 35mm lenses I already have. How can I pass that up!Of course, it's not ALL gravy. The biggest drawback for me, and it's not a small one, is the lack of decent extra-wide-angle primes. I like to have a 24mm equivalent. Suitable lenses in the appropriate focal length (15-17mm) are few and most of those have a technical issue with this sensor. (Something to do with the image hitting the corners at a shallow angle - no problem for film, not as much of a problem with lower-resolution sensors but performance does get compromised with this one...) If Sony's 16mm were a good performer, it would be PERFECT. Unfortunately most reviews are poor. I'm making do with an old Tokina 17mm until a better solution comes along. (It actually is sharper than my Canon 15-85, except along the right edge...)The menu system is not great but it's not a total nightmare. You can assign different functions to the various knobs and buttons, according to what best suits your needs. It will take another week or so for me to settle on a good clean layout, then get used to it.This may not be the ideal system for everyone. The most obvious disadvantage I can think of would be autofocus speed. (Along with selection of dedicated lenses, if AF and electronic aperture control are desired.) But for me (going back to manual focus prime lenses for still life & landscapes) this camera body is a dream come true, just a phenomenal solution for 99.9% of my shooting needs. There is little doubt in my mind that this camera will be remembered as a very important milestone. With a good EVF and a top-notch sensor, mirrorless is now very much a force to be reckoned with. As they inevitably get more refined, I could easily see EVFs taking over in much the same way digital has taken over film. This time around, Sony has eaten Nikon and Canon's lunch. If they want it back, they could offer me a similar product with a full-frame sensor and the next generation better EVF. They might want to hurry up and do it before I get a bunch of e-mount lenses!

Great shutter speed, nice handling, astonishing viewfinder, incredible panoramas specially when you program the camera top to bottom and take it left to right. The only problem so far is that I keep pressing the button for record video unintentionally. Other than that I'm really happy with my new camera, I'm still waiting for my Nikon D800 but this little NEX-7 feels great in your hand and I'm getting use to the lightness and portability.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):
If you order this be certain to get an LCD protector and apply it immediately because the LCD will definitely scratch over seemingly nothing, even just taking it out of your bag. I don't know why such a high end camera would have such a delicate LCD surface but this however is my biggest complaint. This is my favorite digital camera. I've played with but not owned full frame digital, but I will say this camera is better than the APS-C Canons I have owned, and much greater than the micro four thirds cameras. The resolution and detail are far more than I expected based on the reviews. The kit lens is very, very good, do not be swayed by reviews. It's interesting how photo ppl always bitterly compare everything to L lenses, like that makes their photos worthy or unworthy. If Sony brings out more lenses with a range of glass quality and increased f/stop control it will be spectacular. If you get the kit version even that will not be a compromise because the images are excellent as long as you work to use the instrument and know where the lens has minor issues. I think going for the Zeiss will be a worthy investment too. After learning to use the camera, everything is smooth and seems to serve bringing it to your eye and catching what you want to photograph, like a surgical instrument. The navigation wheels are easy to use. One caveat is the record button always being hit accidentally. I think the reviews suffer from too much technology overload and expecting everything to be like one or two favored cameras. The autofocus is perfect up to 800 ISO, but in lower light it does hunt and you have to manually find what you need but that is simple to do once you are used to it. So far I notice the farthest ISO reaches way above 3200 do break up and are unlovely. Just know how to interpret/where to find light, this is the most crucial understanding anyway. Handling is very nice. Manual op is nice, I pers. don't using bracketing techniques anyway so nothing is lacking. It's fun to take photos with, and has an advanced feel, like futuristic. Video quality is maybe less than the GH2 and 5D mkII and III, yes, but better than the 60D I have on hand for direct comparison, but it does have compression issues for some ppl, though I really haven't edited much yet. I think the NEX 7 is like Sony's ES line of high end audio gear, not as respected by the mainstream of its niche as favored labels, but delivering more than it's reputed to- same thing here.

I just love this camera! I purchased this camera because I was tired of lugging around my Canon. Everything about this camera is exactly what I wanted except for one big flaw. The video record/stop button location is so terrible. You need the right hand thumb spot as a support area and not have the button located there. Very disappointing for me as I hit it on accident always. What were the designers thinking??

I'm a photography enthusiast. I've had full blown DLSR's in the past, but find them too bulky for carrying around day to day. But the smaller fixed lens cameras definately lack on quality. So far i've found this camera a perfect mix of the two. it offers the image quality of a DSLR in the small body.
The interface is daunting at first, but all that control really does come in useful, especially when shooting in low light.

One can become very spoiled with the image quality of a full frame camera. However, don't underestimate the latest crop sensor camera from Sony. The NEX-7 was much anticipated and it lives up to my expectations. You can have it work automatically if you want. The Intelligent Auto is really superb. If you want to precise control, there are there external controls which you can program for the functions you need. The biggest surprise of all was the quality of the kit lens! It covers most shooting situations and is great. This little gem puts lot in a small package and has a lot of the features a pro can love. Sony is really serious about penetrating the pro and serious amateur market.
