Sony's Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera is an extremely high 24.3Mp resolution camera. With a generous assortment of compatible E-mount lenses to choose from, photographers can bank on the NEX-7 to handle every photographic opportunity.

Known for their compact size, versatility, and interchangeable lens feature Sony NEX cameras are a digital revolution in the photo world. You can shoot creatively without being worn down by a heavy DSLR rig. In addition, you can also capture 1920 x 1080p HD video, another hallmark of the genre. No matter what you're shooting however, video or stills, the camera's APS-C sensor and the BIONZ image processor work together to help create rich, clear, and incredibly detailed results.

The NEX-7 also features the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. This eye-level finder gives you that same old-school feeling and all the benefits of shooting through a viewfinder - less glare and distraction. The OLED also lets you see the results of adjustments in real time as well. Of course, the camera also sports a tiltable 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD screen. The LCD features Sony's TruBlack screen which suppresses internal reflections.

Expanding the tools in your arsenal for the NEX-7 would be the built-in pop-up flash. Take clean, blur-free photos even in low-light situations. The camera also accepts other Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories thanks to the hot shoe.

The many shooting functions and modes of the NEX-7 give you the means to express your creativity in numerous ways as well. While the many interchangeable lens options provide a major advantage, features like Sweep Panorama, 3D Sweep Panorama, and Object Tracking help make taking great photos a breeze. And Auto HDR improves your photos by combining highlight and shadow detail from multiple shots for the best possible contrast and detail. Additionally, like those big DSLR's the NEX-7 also puts Program, Aperture, Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options.

DSLR Quality in Your Pocket
Here's the same APS-C sensor size as a DSLR, with higher resolution than most DSLRs and the interchangeable lenses that make DSLRs so attractive. Yet the camera is about half the size and weight of a typical DSLR camera. Removing the conventional mirror box and viewfinder makes it possible
24.3Mp Resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It's the highest resolution among pocket cameras as of August 2011
World's First OLED Viewfinder
There's never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. This eye-level, through-the-lens, viewfinder begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail
Up to 10 Frames Per Second Shooting
Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3Mp resolution with exposure and focus fixed at the first frame. Standard continuous shooting at up to 2.5 fps
DSLR-Class APS-C Image Sensor
Sensor size is the key to picture quality. The APS-C class sensor provides gorgeous imaging with 58% more area than Micro Four-Thirds sensors and an amazing 13 times the area of a point & shoot image sensor
Full HD Movies at 60p/60i/24p
Capture HD Movies in your choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web
HD Movies with Full Manual Control
Now you don't need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode
Tri-Navi Manual Control
Perfect for experienced shooters, Tri-Navi control gives you three separate control dials for direct, hands-on access to three settings at a time. As just one example, the dials can set aperture, exposure compensation and ISO
Built-In Pop-Up Flash
Enjoy the convenience of flash photography everywhere you go. Guide Number 6
Hotshoe for Alpha System Flashes
Take your photography even further with access to the entire range of Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories
Accepts A Mount Lenses Via Adapters
Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters (sold separately) allow you to attach the full range of Sony A mount lenses
Phase Detect AF with Adapter
The LA-EA2 lens mount adaptor (sold separately) is the world's first with Sony's award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology. This provides super-fast and accurate Phase Detection AF when used with Sony A mount lenses
Tiltable 3.0" LCD
Sony's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss
Object Tracking AF
Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus
World's Shortest Release Time Lag
Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony NEX-7 boasts the shortest release time in the world (as of August 2011) at only 0.02 seconds
Accepts Sony E-Mount Lenses
Compatible with Sony's expanded line of E Mount lenses. These smaller, lighter lenses are specifically designed for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options
Peaking Function
Manual focus becomes much easier because peaking highlights the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focus setting can make or break your shot
3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television7. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together
6-Image Layering
Leverages the fast BIONZ processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is an incredible single image that controls blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or gets cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode
Auto HDR
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot
P/A/S/M Modes for Video and Stills
Enjoy a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum
iAUTO Mode
Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot
BIONZ Image Processor
The brain of the camera is a Sony's BIONZ image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3Mp images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6-image layering
Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
Accepts Non-Sony Lenses Via Adapter
You can use the camera with a universe of lenses from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Olympus and others. The success of Sony's NEX series, combined with the ultra-short 18mm flange back distance has inspired third-party manufacturers to provide lens adaptors. In addition, Sony has disclosed the E Mount specification to Carl Zeiss, Cosina, Sigma and Tamron
25-Point Auto Focus
25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
HDMI Output
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output
Stamina Battery Power for Up to 400 Shots
Take up to 400 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power (using LCD monitor). Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
Sony Exmor CMOS Sensor
Sony Exmor technology uses column-parallel A/D converters for high resolution and high frame rates. Double noise reduction minimizes image noise, even in low light
11 Picture Effect Modes
Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization, Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color, Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature
Ultrasonic Anti-Dust System
Dust on the image sensor leads to blemishes in the picture. To protect the sensor, Sony incorporates an advanced ultrasonic system, which effectively shakes dust off the sensor surface

The NEX-7 is easily the new benchmark for mirrorless cameras with electronic viewfinders and interchangeable lenses. The EVF in the NEX-7 is simply superb, the best I've ever used, and even better than an optical view finder in low light conditions.

More profoundly, I believe the NEX cameras, especially the 7, are ushering a new era in photography in which mirrorless cameras with EVF can be used as generic digital backs to your favorite lenses. Especially, if you are comfortable with manual focusing.

In this regard, the manual focus assist and live view in the NEX cameras are very nicely designed, which makes manual focusing a breeze. There's also a wide choice of adapters available now from the Sony E mount to other lenses, so you can use pretty much any of your favorite 35mm lens.

I use my NEX 7 primarily as a universal body for my Leica M and R lenses. I have also used it very effectively with several Carl Zeiss and Nikon lenses. The NEX-7 with a compact lens like a Leica 35mm or 50mm Summilux is far more practical, useful, discreet, portable, and cost effective compared to a Leica M9, while delivering stunning images.

The feather-light kit 18-55mm lens is surprisingly good, capable of rendering sharp images with high contrast and pretty free of common aberrations. But it is limited to f/3.5-5.6, and its AF is slow, compared to DSLR lenses. So a low-light lens would be useful to add, whether the new Zeiss 24/1.8 AF lens made for this camera, or any one of numerous fast lenses from another manufacturer.

The low light performance of the NEX-7 is surprisingly good, but obviously, nowhere near the quality of a high end DSLR like a Nikon D3s. I wish Sony had made the sensor a full size, instead of APS-C. That is my ONLY gripe.

Ergonomically, the NEX 7 is excellent to handle, with a couple of small irritants here and there, but overall, very highly usable. The camera also comes with a lot of other bells and whistles that are typical in modern consumer cameras, like HD video, panoramic stitching, built in HDR, etc.

Net-net, I think the NEX-7 is a paradigm-changing camera that has a very low key profile, but delivers pro DSLR quality images if you use it with the right lenses in reasonably good lighting.

nice IQ if you can find a good lens for it, but I found the size of the body and lenses to be mismatched as well. My main complaint is that the mirrorless design coupled with the big sensor seems to create a dust-attracting field. I went on a cliffside hike along southern California beaches, and only changed lenses a few times and was careful & quick, yet was dismayed to find the camera sensor had attracted quite a large & noticeable amount of dust, which the basic Sony NEX "dust shaker" could not handle.

So "in the field" I was desperately trying to clean the sensor to no avail and it ruined an otherwise nice day. I have never had this trouble with other cameras, and had the C3 before this which did not have this problem. So I think perhaps the large sensor acts as a vacuum to bring in the dust? I have since moved over to the Pentax K5 which offers a far better assortment of quality lenses, comparable image quality (better high ISO too) than Sony has provided for the NEX; and Pentax will have a mirrorless K-01 camera soon which can use these K / KAF mount lenses.

Pros

  • Focus peaking
  • Image quality is amazing
  • Tilt /Swivel LCD

Cons

  • Lag / Shutter Delay
  • Short Battery Life

Best Uses

  • All of the above

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

There are some features about this camera that I hope more nex-users will become aware of that will encourage Sony to look into changing/improving.

-the lcd can be easily scratched "if you own a nikon or a canon you will notice that their LCD's are stronger"
-takes too long to delete photos
-navigating from live view to menu feels laggy
-tri navy is a little too sensitive
-the record button shouldn't be where it is "should have put a Custom Key in that spot"

Although this list is comprised of pure negativity haha, I do really love this camera...The image quality is unreal "BIONIC" ........and because its so compact and lightweight...you don't have to have a super expensive tripod to keep it stable! WOW! AWESOME!

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

After an extensive amount of research and review reading, I took the plunge and bought this camera body. I like the feel of it in my hands ( which are not too big,and not too small). So far, it has delivered everything promised by Sony. I've taken some test shots inside and outside, and they have all come out very, very nice.

I did not buy any of the E-mount lenses; rather I invested in the adaptor to use my Minolta A mount lenses, and a few Sony lenses. Autofocusing is snappy and manual focusing using the af/mf button is simple.

I haven't yet figured out how to set up the buttons for custom shots, but that will come in the next week or so as I experiment more.

The real test will come when I travel in mid-June. Once I return, I will upload some images taken on the journey.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

Have an NEX-5n. Control of NEX-7 is very close to ideal. Much better then 5. Seems a little quieter then the 5n. With plenty of light, the image quality is supurb, but noise at 400 asa and up is much higher then the 5n. Wish Sony would make a NEX-6 with the 16 meg sensor, but viewfinder, microphone input and control wheels of the sensor, specifically for low light. But why the heck can't we get a headphone jack for monitoring sound?

I have so far used the camera for some low-light portraits and a lot of garden/landscape photos. The detail can be amazing. So far I have shot only with a circular polarizer on shooting outdoors. The photos were a bit softer than I expected. This was with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. I have found way more noise in low light than in my Nikon D700, but overall I like the results that I am getting. The controls take some getting used to but are not bad at all.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

After about 15 hours of very frustrating attempts to set it up for myself, I gave up. All the reviews correctly hightlight all the wonderful features but fail to identify the ones that ruin the fun of photography.
Ex.: No depth of field preview; OSS turn off demands menu wandering. A camera designed for serious use, burdened with dozens of silly menu/quirky style choices that just serve to take the fun out of the experience.
Documentation: I planned to try my hand at video. The DVD furnished PDF manual (that's cheesy - please furnish a real handbook) has no reference to "movie" or "video" in the Table of Contents or Index. After a page by page search in the 201 page printout, I found video intructions; ie. "1. Press button to start." 2. "Press button to stop." There you have it, how to use you NEX 7 for video. I returned it. The moral: don't buy a camera from a video game manufacterer.

This camera has that solid feel about it which is instantly reasuring. The functionality is superb, the tri nav system combined with the soft keys make selection of modes and parameters a breeze. the only flaws I see are the relatively short battery life and the annoying video button, Sony need to distribute a plastic guard to retrofit over this to prevent accidental operation. Otherwise a beautiful camera.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

I had this on my wish list since fall of 2011. However, the floods in Thailand put any hopes of availablity on hold until April, 2012. I was on the BH waiting list & I finally received my NEX-7 body last month. I also ordered the 50mm f1.8 with it.Like the title says, it was well worth the wait. I currently own an NEX-5N & absolutely love it although it has a couple of shortcomings. The NEX-7 addresses most of these. I do some indoor shooting & wanted to have the EVF and flash at the same time. I added the optional EVF finder to the 5N & rarely take it off. With the 7, I get the evf, and keep the HVL-F20AM flash in place (the pop-up flash is alittle weak & casts a shadow with longer lenses/sunshades). The added dials along with the funtion button next to the shutter release pretty much eliminates the need to take my eye away from the viewfinder to make adjustments. The learning curve for the customization of the functions is a little steep and there's some overlap but once you have the camera set up to you liking, adjustments come naturally. I have most of the E-mount lenses but usually keep the 50mm on the 5N and the Zeiss 24mm f1.8. The 24MP sensor on the 7 really rings the upmost out of the Zeiss glass, but the 50mm is no slouch either. These along with the 18-200mm zoom, the 30mm macro, 16mm pancake w/optional fisheye conversion, a lensbaby & a SLIK Mini-Pro make a nice, lightweight bag that I keep near the door when I'm on my way out to run errends, attend family functions, etc. I started playing with HDR and the NEX-7 is a natural for this purpose. It has built-in HDR that covers a range from +/-1.0 EV up to +/-6.0 EV and the effects can be fairly dramatic. However, I prefer to use post-processing with Photomatix or something similar. By setting the NEX-7 on aperature priorty and keeping the f-stop constant, I can bracket the EV levels up & down by 5.0 EVs in 1/3 or 1/2 increments after getting the "normal" exposure. While the auto white balance does a decent job as a default setting, changing it on the fly, adjusting color temperature or color bias is a great way of seeing what you're actually going to get when you snap the shutter. Speaking of the view, the finder can be set to show the bare minimum of settings all the way up to information overload. My Canon 5D MK II is still my heavy artillary when I'm out for a day of deliberate shooting, but a true enthusiast/semi-pro could get along quite well with the the NEX-7 and a couple of extra lenses. The resolution is amazing (same sensor as the A77). Coupled with the Zeiss 24mm f1.8, this combination makes a GREAT street camera.

I use the camera for general photography, and product photography. I do a lot of close-up work and like it for that. excellent image quality and control.
It is easy to accidentally press the soft keys on the back. Very frustrating.

Superb image quality in a small package. Poor man's Leica 9. EVF surprisingly good. Autofocus slow in low light, accidental video activation and top-dial rotation are beyond annoying: Detents needed. Zeiss 24mm f1.8 lens is strikingly good, 18-200mm stabilized lens more than adequate.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

I have been using the NEX 7 for several months now as my carry-everywhere "walk-about" camera with with great results using legacy M mount lenses by Leica and Zeiss. Such use requires an adaptor such as the Voitlander M-to-E mount adaptor available on this site or Hawk's Factory helicoid model which facilitates a closer minimum focusing distance with the turn of a control ring.Use of manual lenses that do not "communicate" with the camera also requires going into the "Settings" menu and selecting "Enable" under "Release w/o Lens". If this option is not enabled, the legacy lenses will not work on this camera. Using the manual focus assist and peaking features make use of manual lenses a snap.I've been a Nikon full frame DSLR camera user for several years, and certainly feel that those larger and heavier cameras still have a role to play in serious photography. But on a recent shoot of Texas wildflowers, compared to the NEX 7, the Nikon felt like a cannonball on a rope around my neck. And at 8.5" x 11" or even 13" x 19" print size, it is hard to remember which shots were taken with which camera. My only real complaint with the NEX 7 is the red video button, which is way-too-easily engaged accidentally. I'm hoping Sony will offer a way to set that button to be active or off via a firmware update.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

I'm amazed by this little powerhouse! It doesn't leave my side, I carry it everywhere.
The resolution is great. The lack of noise at higher ISO's so I can shoot at 3200 and still get a pretty clear photo. The Tri-Nav function makes it so easy to take photos in manual mode I just love it. The dials do tend to rotate when you hang the camera down by your side but it's not that annoying.
Focus has a little problem at low light levels but so do most cameras. Just make sure there's a little contrast to what you're focusing on, or use the manual focus(which is a snap!). I'm also very impressed with the clear and sharp viewfinder.

I travel around Afghanistan with this little gem. It's rugged and smaller than all the other DSLR's I carry around and I still get professional quality photos.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

This is the best camera I've ever used for manual focus legacy lenses (including rangefinders and SLR actually intended for use with those lenses). Focus peaking and mf assist work great, and it's possible to customize buttons and wheels according to one's shooting style. Image quality is stunning; the problem is finding glass that can keep up with the NEX-7's sensor.
                  Just a few minor gripes:
-The menu system is not logically arranged
-The autofocus hunts a bit under normal indoor lighting with the 18-55mm and Sigma 19mm lenses
-For video, there's a huge amount of rolling shutter at 24p BUT (and every online review I've seen has missed this point) virtually disappears shooting at 60p; I highly recommend you shoot video at 60p if doing anything handheld.

I was completely ready jump on board with this camera, and then I checked to see what it would do for exposure barcketing. Bottom line is not much. The most you can get is +-0.7. If you want to do any real HDR, you're out of luck. Sony did include an HDR setting, but we all know that's not the same thing. What would they cripple an otherwise awsome camera? This is a deal breaker for me.

I used my NEX-5 while on vacation in SE Asia but found that I really needed a camera with a viewfinder. . .this was because my Transitin glasses were usually too dark to allow me to frame pictures on the LED screen so my shots were by guess and by golly. . hence the purchase of the NEX-7 which not only gives mea viewfinder but offers a host of additional features and enhanced resolution. . many of which I haven't as yet tried. . but it is incredibly fast, takes phenomenally clear images. . I am very pleased.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera (Black, Body Only):

Chose to wait for this after being dissatisfied with the ergonomics of the 5N and very happy I did. The feel and operation of this camera are fantastic and once you've set it all up to your liking, it does a truly admirable job of just getting out of the way and letting you shoot. Using legacy lenses combined with the incredible EVF and focus peaking really draws you into the process of perfectly composing a shot, which is ironic because the 24 MP sensor offers downright astounding cropability. The sensor is a bit of a double edged sword however, as the insane level of detail renders it pretty unforgiving with respect to min shutter speed. Noise performance is crazy for this many pixels. While there is slightly more than the 5N, it has a very appealing film-like character and retains a ton of detail when cleaned up in PP. At the end of the day, this camera combined with legacy glass and Lightroom 4 has been the most fun I've had with photography in years.
