The Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens is not a point-and-shoot and not a DSLR, but it holds its place in the market, intriguing those who want the flexibility that interchangeable lenses and numerous manual and creative features can give them, without having to lug around a huge DSLR body. The body is packaged along with an 18-55mm Sony lens, allowing you to start shooting right from day one.

Size aside, the Alpha NEX-5N embodies a number of features that make it a worthy option for any connoisseur of digital cameras. First and foremost would be the 16.1Mp APS-C CMOS sensor. With 16.1Mp your images will have lush color and impressive detail. Your options for making enlarged prints are boundless as well. Sony's Exmor APS HD CMOS technology works together with the BIONZ image processor for excellent low light sensitivity and a distinct lack of sensor noise. On the back of the body is a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD that boasts Sony's TruBlack screen which suppresses internal reflections. This LCD also tilts down 45° and up 80° for framing hard-to-get shots.

In addition to capturing still images, every Sony NEX junkie longs to let their filmmaker persona out. Sony's NEX-5N does not disappoint this class of aspiring Spielbergs. The long standing camera company knows that in addition to versatility in lens options, along with a small form-factor, the HD video capture is right up there in importance. Video can be recorded at 1920 x 1080 in a number of frame rates, including 60p and 24p. The camera also uses the AVCHD codec for high-quality capture, and the MP4 codec for easy upload to the Internet. The camera also sports an HDMI output for one-cable sharing of your favorite videos on the big screen (AKA: your HDTV).

When it comes to what lenses the NEX-5N takes, Sony made it compatible with their E-Mount series of smaller, lighter lenses designed specifically for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Using optional LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters you can also attach A-Mount lenses to the camera as well. The LA-EA2 also provides Phase Detection AF as well. The mirror built-in between the two mounts directs a small portion of light to the phase detection AF sensor in the bottom of the unit, making this feature available to you when the adapter is connected.

As for shooting options and modes, the NEX-5N has a number of them. First up is 10 frames per second shooting, at the camera's full 16.1Mp resolution. This mode enables great sports and kids photos. Another notable feature is Photo Creativity Touch. This mode allows you to be creative with your photos in-camera, right on the LCD screen, in real time. Sweep Panorama and 3D Sweep Panorama modes allow for capture of scenic vistas and 16:9 (wide angle) shots as panoramas and in wondrous 3D, respectively. Among the other features you'll find Object Tracking AF, Auto HDR, Intelligent Auto Focus, iAUTO mode, and many others.

DSLR Quality in Your Pocket
This is the world's smallest interchangeable lens digital still camera using a large APS-C size sensor (as of Aug 2011). The removal of the conventional mirror box and viewfinder results in a camera body that is about half the size and weight of a standard DSLR camera
Up to 10 Frames Per Second Shooting
Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 16.1Mp resolution. Standard continuous shooting speeds vary based upon shooting conditions and memory card speeds
16.1Mp Exmor APS-C CMOS Image Sensor
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. Thanks to the APS-C sensor size and Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS technology, the camera achieves high resolution with no penalty in low-light sensitivity or sensor noise
HD Movie Shooting 60p/24p
Record Full HD 1920 x 1080 video in a variety of frame rates from 60p for super smooth action to 24p for a more cinematic feel. The NEX-5N utilizes the AVCHD codec, the industry standard for high quality HD video capture, as well as the MP4 codec for easy upload to the web due to it's smaller file size
Photo Creativity Touch
The Photo Creativity interface enables you to easily enjoy the creative expression through direct photographic control in an easy to use interface. Changes can be combined/removed and viewed in real time on the LCD making it a breeze to make adjustments
Tiltable 3.0" Touch LCD
Sony's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further in bright sunlight. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss
Object Tracking AF Via Touch LCD
Object Tracking AF can lock onto a specified object and maintain focus even as the subject moves. This hassle-free mode allows unpredictable subjects to stay in focus even while zooming. Letting you concentrate on the scene and composition without having to worry about focus. The subject on which to lock focus is easily selected via the touch screen or the center button of the control wheel
World's Shortest Release Time Lag
In photography, shutter lag, or release time, is the delay between triggering the shutter by fully depressing the shutter button and when the photograph is actually recorded. By initiating the exposure electronically instead of with the traditional shutter mechanism, release time on the NEX-5N is reduced to just 20 milliseconds - helping you to capture the decisive moment
Optional XGA OLED Viewfinder
The optional FDA-EV1S OLED Tru-Finder offers a large, bright and wide-view of the scene. With high resolution 2.395K dot, and unprecedented speed, contrast and color accuracy, the FDA-EV1S provides an extraordinary view
11 Picture Effect Modes
There are 11 picture effects modes to choose from: Posterization (Color, B/W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera (Normal, Cool, Warm, Green, Magenta), Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature. Each is unique and each gives you a new and exciting way to make your images and videos pop
Peaking AF Display
The Peaking AF display makes precise manual focusing much easier by highlighting the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focal plane can make or break your shot
3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television4. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together. Up to 23Mp image size. Up to 202 degrees maximum sweep angle (16mm focal length)
6-Image Layering
The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. The camera then combines the data from the 6 different images to create a single image. This method is used to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or to get cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode
Auto HDR
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot. Until recently, you needed a computer and editing software. Sony builds HDR in. Handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes. Captures in a split second
P/A/S/M Operating Modes
The NEX-5N offers a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum
iAUTO Mode
Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot
BIONZ Image Processor
The brain of the camera is a refined version of Sony's BIONZ image processor. Its chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 25600 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 16.1 megapixel images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6 image layering
Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Dynamic Range Optimizer improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
Accepts Sony E-Mount Lenses
Compatible with Sony's E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses designed specifically for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options
Phase Detect AF for E-Mount Bodies with Adapter
Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters (sold separately) allow you to attach A-mount lenses to your E-mount camera. However, the LA-EA2 is the world's first adapter to leverage Sony's exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology to provide super fast and accurate Phase Detection AF as well. The LA-EA2 adapter has a translucent mirror built-in between the two mounts that directs a small portion of the light to the phase detection AF sensor in the bottom of the unit
25-Point Auto Focus
25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
HDMI Output
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output
Stamina Battery Power for Up to 430 Shots
Take up to 430 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power. Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence

So where to start... I shot with nikon gear since 04. i got all the way to FX D700 and pro zooms etc. due to financial issues i sold ALL my stuff this spring. My birthday is saturday, so my lovely wife bought me ( well, we went together to the store) new 5n... Short: this is the BEST camera for the money vs. size vs. price. NOTHING can touch it if you consider these 3 factors TOGETHER. Lens lineup is lacking ,sure, but that will slowly change, i'm sure. If you even remotely consider it , GET IT ! Longer: While it is not maybe suitable for professional use, such as weddings , or sports, the output straight out of camera is STUNNING, especially considering its size and price. I have yet to look at raw files, as I am not sure adobe supports them yet, but all my recent test shots I did, I shot RAW + JPG. Honestly I like the output much better then all my nikons , thats why I always shot raw, but with nex 5n Jpgs look great, in all but most challenging situations. Skin tones look great SOOC, no fiddeling with being too pink, too orange, etc etc... WB misses every now and then by a little ,especially in tungsten lighting, but that is for 95% of cameras. Just do manual WB, takes like 2 seconds, or shoot raw.I have DRO set to auto, works great. I cannot compare 5n focus speed to older model, but it is plenty fast and tracking with the kit lens too. ( again dont expect performance of D3S and pro 2.8 zooms) Touch screen together with 4 programmable buttons works great. When nex first came out, i was digusted with everything being menu driven and instantly rejected the camera. Nex 5n got it right and then some! this is the most pleasant to use camera I've ever used, beating my D700 and thats saying a lot. You can use combination of buttons and touchscreen to your liking. Just awesome... ISO performance - IF it is focused properly,( which sometimes IS an issue, especially when you use auto multi area focusing ) is nothing short of stunning again for its size and price. In 3 days I had the camera I'm pulling shots that I could not even dream of with FX camera and few thousand $$ worth of lenses. ( handheld...) And thats with kit lens for [$] total. Up to iso 1000 its amazing, underexposed or not. Iso 1600 is still great, noise resembles more of fine film grain then actual digital noise. about 2500 is still pretty great if exposed AND focused properly, especially with very low shutter speeds. Iso 3200 is still very very good but detail is starting to go. 6400 is definitely usable, but I'd rather leave it for BW shots if I was after really high quality detailed shot. BUT, and there is a big BUT (lol) SONY's proprietary handheld twilight mode is AMAZING ! it is really mind boggling how they managed to make it work so great. Camera picks iso and shoots I believe 5 shots. Try to hold camera steady and tell your subject not to move. If there is slight movement no problem , camera deals with it surprisingly well. Cam then combines those 5 rapid shots into final one photo that is much much cleaner . Iso 6400 shot this way in really really low light looks almost as good as iso 1600 = awesome. All and all despite not really liking sony as a brand in general, This camera is packed with features and performance and it is A W E S O M E.And thats from someone who dumped $8000 of nikon pro stuff. So glad I didnt choose another dslr because 70% or the time it just sit around collecting dust due to size. This is the camera to get if you want performance is small package and dont feel like lugging DSLR around.Hope this helps.

Good camera. I bought this to allow me to have a "pocketable" camera to take with me when I don't feel like lugging around my Canon 60D. Based off reviews I had very high expectations of the image quality. Knowing it had a slightly larger APS-C sensor than my DSLR (Sony's 1.5x versus Canon's 1.6x), I expected the photos to be comparable. Unfortunately what I have found so far is this camera does not take photos of the same league as my 60D. It may be due to the 18-55mm kit lens, but honestly even the 18-135mm kit lens that shipped with my 60D took superior photos (and I never really use it anymore, since I prefer my EF 35mm f/2.0). So if you think this can replace your DSLR, you will be disappointed.

I will keep my hopes up with this camera and likely add the 16mm pancake for an extra compact package, but this will definitely only be used when I don't want to go through the hassle of lugging around a larger camera. The NEX-5N's size is very reasonable for the performance it provides. It literally cleans the floor with my old compact camera, a Canon G10. There is no comparison other than the body sizes, where the NEX is actually smaller if you don't include the lens.

Something else unfortunate is the clicking sound in the camera body when panning back and forth. When shooting video this causes a loud clicking sound to be heard, which renders the video virtually worthless. If you are very careful and do not pan the camera you can sometimes avoid the sound. It appears to be related to the shutter or some other moving part in the body itself (it will make the same noise when shut off and with no lens attached).

My review would have been 4 stars based off the joy I had using this camera so far, but with the video issue around the clicking noise, I have to drop to 3 stars. Sony really should be checking these things before sending shipments to retailers. Shame on you Sony, you are not nearly as professional as the likes of Canon and Nikon.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Recently, I bought a camera for my girlfriend, Sony NEX-5N. I have a lot of friend recommend me for buying SONY NEX , and they always tell me about how good is it for this camera. This is my first time of using mirrorless camera. I have been using DSLR for capturing picture and recording video for almost three years.

SONY NEX-5N is really easy to use even you dont have any skill with these kind of camera before. All the functions are almost like DSLR but it's just easier to use and understand. Touch screen makes it easy to focus.

However, one good thing for sony is the stabilizer is in the camera's body. This can make your video clip look like professional even you dont use tripod for recording.

In short, SONY NEX-5N is good for both professional and beginner. The price is convincing if you have a medium budget for camera. I like it with overall :)

I've had this camera for a few weeks now and I have to say I love it!.... It has everything I need in a much more compact design than my DSLR. The intelligent auto is surprisingly good. All of the manual options are there if they are needed for certain circumstances but I've found myself leaving it auto most of the time. The capabilities of this camera are impressive. 10 fps comes in handy when shooting my kids playing and the low light feature that stacks photos works really well also. I would recommend this camera highly!

I'm a Canon 5D Mark II user. For travel on long hikes, I had an Olympus E-P2 PEN 4/3--size was great, but image quality appeared to my eye pasty. Also, lots of noise even at 400 and unsatisfactory dynamic range. Sold the equipment and bought the Sony 5N. I shoot mostly RAW. Images are excellent. JPEG is also very fine. Good color; very good detail. Acceptable dynamic range. Interface was easy to get used to, despite having to use the screen. Feels more responsive than the Olympus. Focus is adequate, except in low light (typical of mirrorless systems). Overall very positive feelings about the equipment.

Have made three 5 minute videos. Picture is excellent.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

This camera is absolutely fantastic. It is very portable, appealing to look at, and a great bargain. I shoot with it everyday and im always stunned by its picture quality :) As for its video capture, i have used it to capture golf swings, and it captures the swing frame by frame(in stunning quality). The battery life is very durable; it hasnt ever run out of battery on a photoshoot.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I have had NEX 5 for a year and half now and I thank myself for buying an extended warranty. The camera has inconsistent problem of getting locked up when shooting. The screen turns blue and flashes 'camera error'. You have to turn the camera off and turn it back on to start using it again. At times it works without this problem for days and then suddenly at a critical time it starts jamming and locking up again.
I have tried formatting and changing cards, batteries even removing and changing lenses but he problem keeps coming back. I had sent it in November to Precision camera for repairs and the work order showed that they had done some repair on LCD then. But the camera error message came back on while I was on vacation. Its back to precision camera again after it got completely locked and jammed up again .
I used to like the camera.. its versatility, weight, size and features and I have made substantial investment in various lenses including the 18-200 and the new bigger flash, but I am now beginning to question the reliability of it mechanics. It has failed me at critical times and now I use it just as a back up because I guess I am stuck with it.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I use the Nex-5N for shooting daily life, food (for a blog) and yoga postures.I also use video.Things I love: easy to navigate/intuitive (I'm not a huge camera person). It's easy to compose a shot and with sunlight makes fantastic photos; even on Auto. My simple Auto photos look almost professional.Things not so great: The camera is lens-heavy (literally) and can travel relatively well but I worry about it being damaged. The touch screen for focus isn't awesome and jumps around.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I took this camera out of the box and went to the New Orleans Jazz Festival. The quality of the photos is surprisingly good despite the varying lighting conditions, from in a tent to in bright sunlight. The continuous shooting function is great for fast moving action. I wish the zoom got a little closer and will most likely invest in another lense, but I am very pleased with my photos considering I had no time to review the manual before taking the camera out

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Use this camera for various building inspections where we are on the go and the lighting conditions are not always the best. The fast shutter speed and light sensors prevent blurry images without needing to stop and focus. Sturdy and feels solid in my hand. Love the touch screen and the ability to pan with the touch screen when in viewing mode. Not happy with the placement of movie record button - accidently hit it a few times.

I bought this camera for street use. It is really powerful and packs a lot features. I originally wanted the nex 7 but after researching both cameras I decided to go with the 5n it shoots great videos and also gives me slr results when I'm shooting stills. All in all it is an amazing little camera.

I have been getting into food photography as of late. I have many friends who are pro photographers and the thought of lugging all those huge cameras and lens was discouraging. After countless hours of reading reviews and comparisons the choice became the more obvious! The pictures are simply stunning and the camera is sooo easy to operate! A must have friends!

I shot a soccer game and was impressed with the freeze action. I also tried the Nikon J1 and found it not in the same league. If you are deciding between the Sony NEX 5N and the Nikon J1, get the Sony! There is no comparison between the two cameras. You can also buy a low cost adapter ($25) to use your old Canon or Nikon lens. Full manual control works like the old SLR cameras. The video is also great - I found no clicking sounds like previous comments. Great low light pictures.
