For an external backup, I find the Canvio a great value with completely satisfactory operation.
No frills, no complexities. I make it my backup destination and run my software. It's quite fast, comparing favorably to my last Maxtor III backup. It does not come with backup software, but there are several very good backup programs available as freeware.

The Canvio external harddrive worked as I had hoped for. It was a simple plug and play device when used with an XP operating system.
The drive was recognized immediately and moving files to it was a simple drag and drop operation in Windows explorer.

This is a good, basic external hard drive. I use it to back up music and photos, which I plan to do about once a month. It's very user-friendly. The one tricky thing is that I had to reformat it for Mac to use it with my Macbook, and had to figure out how to do that on my own.

It was relatively cheap and worked immediately with my laptop (win 7). I'm only using it as a backup/storage drive for music, pictures, video, etc...
Cons:
It came formatted with just under 300GB of space, so be aware of that incase you're banking on the full capacity being available.
